To use a Monport laser engraver safely, first identify the exact model, laser type, and controller, then follow that machine’s current manual for setup, software, focusing, and operation. Monport sells distinct CO2, fiber, UV, diode, K40, Reno, and other machines, so a procedure that applies to one desktop laser cutter may not apply to another. Start with the Monport download center and select your model before powering up.
What to check before setting up a Monport laser engraver
Find the model name and controller on the machine’s label or paperwork. In Monport’s download center, locate the matching user manual and any model-specific software or parameter downloads. Do not assume that a K40, Reno, MEGAS, fiber, UV, or diode machine uses the same cooling, focusing, connection, or software procedure.
Before choosing settings or materials, check the manual for your machine’s work area, focus method, supported materials, ventilation, cooling requirements, and safety controls. If any of these are unclear, pause rather than borrowing instructions from a different Monport model.

- Brand New Integrated Mini Fiber Laser: The brand new Monport fiber marking machine has a smaller size and lighter weight; Simultaneously maintaining the original high performance and a lifespan of up to 100000 hours. The fiber laser can engrave all metals. (gold, silver, copper, stainless steel, brass, titanium, etc.)
- Faster and More Accurate: The newly customized galvanometer system is equipped with more expensive silicon material reflectors, allowing for a maximum speed of 10000mm/s. Monport has also customized an F-theta field mirror, which, together with the entire marking system, can achieve a carving accuracy of 0.01mm.
- Just Right Working Area: For a 30W fiber laser, an area of 150*150mm is optimal, as excessive engraving area may result in poor engraving effect or even distortion. After special tuning by Monport, even when carving at the edges, there will be no weak light.
- Deep Engraving and Cutting Capabilities: With this 30W fiber laser marking machine, you can perform 2.5D metal engraving, deep metal engraving, and even some metal sheet cutting (usually the higher the power, the stronger the deep engraving and cutting ability, and the higher the efficiency. If you want stronger and faster results, Monport recommends purchasing a 3mW or above machine)
- Lightburn Compatible: All Monport fiber marking machines can be operated using Lightburn, but if you don't want to use Lightburn, we also provide free and easy-to-use software (Free software and backup parameters are saved on a USB drive and included in the packaging).
How to set up a Monport laser engraver
1. Prepare the workspace and inspect the machine
Place the machine on a stable, level workbench with enough room to open its lid and route the exhaust. Check the machine and accessories for shipping damage, remove packing materials as the manual directs, and confirm that moving parts are unobstructed.
These setup details are not universal: Monport’s MEGAS setup guide calls for a stable bench, nearby power, ventilation and space for the exhaust hose and lid. Its unpacking instructions also say to inspect the chamber and verify that the laser head moves freely. Follow your own model’s guide for equivalent checks.
2. Install the prescribed exhaust and cooling
Install the exhaust system specified for your machine before engraving. The MEGAS guide describes attaching the adapter, hose, and clamp and routing exhaust outdoors or to a filtration system. Monport’s Reno guide also calls for exhaust installation. Use the routing and filtration requirements in the manual for your model.
Cooling requirements depend on the machine. The MEGAS guide requires filling its cooling system and warns not to operate that machine without coolant. Do not add coolant or assume a cooling system is needed unless your own machine’s manual says so.

3. Install compatible software and follow version-specific instructions
Use the software named for your model and controller. Monport lists resources for LightBurn and other programs, including RDWorks, CorelDRAW, Inkscape, and EzCad, but these are not interchangeable across every machine. Check the current download center and manual rather than choosing software by brand alone.
For MEGAS, Monport’s M-Design Hub instructions include first-time setup steps tied to particular software versions and a firmware sequence. Because version notices can change, check that page for the current instructions before setup; do not apply its steps to a different model.
4. Connect, focus, and position the material
Connect the machine using the method specified for its controller and software. Follow the model’s focus procedure, then position and secure the material with the machine off or in the safe state prescribed by its manual. If supported, use the software’s framing or preview function to check where the job will run before starting.
Focus features differ by model: Monport describes magnetic-assisted focus for Reno and autofocus-related features for MEGAS. Those features should not be assumed for other machines. Consult the Reno guide, MEGAS guide, or the matching manual for your specific machine.

How to prepare and test your first engraving
5. Choose a material the machine supports
Confirm material compatibility in the machine’s manual or manufacturer guidance before engraving or cutting. Monport’s MEGAS beginner material list includes basswood, acrylic, cardboard, leather, and kraft paper, but that list is not approval for every laser type, machine, or material formulation.
Never engrave or cut a material if you cannot confirm that it is compatible with your machine. A material’s name alone may not identify its composition or suitability.
6. Test on a matching offcut
Before committing a finished piece, test the intended engraving or cut on scrap of the same material. Monport’s wood engraving guide says wood results vary by type and recommends testing combinations rather than relying on one setting. Even sheets that appear to be the same material can behave differently.
Use the settings and adjustment guidance for your model, and change them in small, controlled steps. Avoid copying a power-and-speed table from another machine or project as if it were universal.

Laser safety is part of setup, not an optional finishing step. The FDA says Class IV lasers present immediate eye and skin hazards from direct or reflected exposure and may also present a fire hazard. Read your machine’s hazard label and manual; do not infer its hazard class from wattage. The FDA’s laser products and instruments guidance explains these hazards.
- Operate the enclosure, interlocks, and other protective controls as the manual directs. Never defeat an interlock or run with the enclosure open unless the manufacturer documents a safe service procedure.
- Keep people and pets away, clear combustible clutter from the work area, and supervise the machine while it runs.
- Confirm that the exhaust or filtration system is operating and that the material is approved for your machine.
- Use only the protective equipment specified for the machine’s wavelength and operating conditions. An enclosure or ordinary eyewear should not be treated as proof that an unspecified setup is safe.
What to do after the job
Wait for the job to end and remove the material as your machine’s instructions direct. Follow the model’s manual for cleaning and maintenance of lenses, mirrors, rails, cooling, and exhaust. Monport provides separate manuals for machines and accessories through its download center; use the one that matches your equipment rather than applying a generic cleaning method or schedule.
How to choose among Monport machines
If you are still deciding which machine to use, compare the factors that determine whether it suits your work and workspace:
- Laser type and the materials you intend to engrave or cut
- Work area and power needed for your planned projects
- Controller and software compatibility
- Focus and height-adjustment method
- Required exhaust, filtration, and cooling setup
- Availability of a matching manual and support resources
Monport’s machine resources and manuals differ by product family, so use the current model documentation to verify the practical details before purchase or setup.
