A zipper foot lets you stitch close to zipper tape without sewing over it. The exact way it attaches and shifts depends on your machine and foot, so check your machine’s manual first. Before sewing, select the specified straight stitch and turn the handwheel by hand to confirm the needle clears the foot and zipper.

What a zipper foot does

A zipper foot provides clearance to sew close to the zipper teeth or tape. Depending on its design, it can be positioned on either side of the needle so you can stitch along both sides of a zipper without the main body of the presser foot riding over the zipper.

There is no universal attachment method or left/right setting. For example, Brother documents a snap-on style with two pins, while Janome lists an adjustable style that slides to either side and tightens with a thumb screw. Follow the instructions for your particular machine and foot rather than assuming one design’s setup applies to another.

How to attach and position the foot

  1. Check the manual. Confirm how your machine releases and attaches the presser foot, and which zipper-foot type is compatible.
  2. Attach the foot as its design requires. On Brother’s documented snap-on design, engage one of the two pins. Choose the pin that places the foot opposite the needle’s intended path. For an adjustable, screw-mounted style, move the foot to the required side and tighten its thumb screw, as directed by its instructions.
  3. Select the specified stitch. Brother’s snap-on instructions call for a centered straight stitch. Stitch settings can vary by machine, so use the settings in your own manual.
  4. Check clearance by hand. With the machine unpowered, turn the handwheel slowly through a stitch. Confirm that the needle passes through its intended opening and does not hit the foot, zipper teeth, or slider. Do not start powered sewing until the needle clears.

A needle striking metal can break and may injure you. Reposition the foot or adjust the setup according to the manual if the needle’s path is obstructed.

How to sew along both sides of a zipper

Brother’s zipper-insertion instructions describe sewing from the bottom toward the top on both sides. The direction and stitch settings in that procedure are specific to the applicable machine instructions; use your machine’s own directions if they differ.

  1. Position the zipper and fabric as directed for your project, then place the foot so it can stitch close to the first side of the zipper without crossing the teeth.
  2. Lower the needle by hand and check its clearance before sewing. Stitch along that side, guiding the fabric while keeping the needle clear of the zipper itself.
  3. If the slider blocks the foot, stop with the needle lowered in the fabric. Raise the presser foot, move the slider out of the foot’s path, lower the presser foot, then continue.
  4. Reposition the foot for the other side as its design requires, check needle clearance again, and sew the second side.
  5. Remove any basting stitches when the zipper is sewn in place.

Brother’s procedure for zipper insertion and moving an obstructing slider is described in its zipper-foot insertion instructions and zipper installation instructions.

Standard, adjustable, and concealed zipper feet

Foot type What it is for What to verify
Standard zipper foot Stitching close to a conventional zipper; the attachment and positioning depend on the foot design. How it attaches, how it shifts to each side, and which machines accept it.
Adjustable zipper foot A design that moves to either side; Janome lists a style secured with a thumb screw. Do not assume another brand’s foot has the same adjustment or attachment mechanism.
Concealed or invisible zipper foot Designed for concealed zippers when the machine maker specifies this specialty foot. Brother says its included standard zipper foot is not designed for invisible zippers and recommends its concealed zipper foot for that use. Confirm compatibility with your model.
Zipper/piping foot A distinct attachment intended for zipper and piping work, depending on its instructions. Brother documents an adjustable zipper-and-piping foot separately; check its fit and use instructions for your machine.

Brother’s pages explain its snap-on zipper-foot installation, its adjustable zipper and piping foot, and whether an included zipper foot works with invisible zippers. These are model- and product-specific examples, not a universal fit guide.

If the needle hits the foot or zipper

  • Stop sewing immediately; do not try to force the needle past an obstruction.
  • Check that you have the correct foot and that it is attached in the position specified for your machine.
  • Confirm the selected stitch and needle position match the foot’s instructions. A stitch that moves the needle sideways can cause a collision.
  • Turn the handwheel slowly to check the needle’s full path again before sewing under power.
  • If clearance remains uncertain, consult the machine manual or manufacturer’s support instructions for your model.
