“Wall of Color” is a first-grade art lesson in which children express their community through a collaborative mural. Small groups paint and add crayon details to a shared piece of mural paper while classmates work in sketchbooks. The title is also easy to confuse with Sean Scully’s distinct Wall of Light series, so the two subjects should not be treated as the same artwork or activity.
What the Wall of Color lesson involves
The NUMI Foundation lesson, “Wall of Color: Expressing My Community Through Color,” is designed for first grade. Students contribute to a community mural in small groups, using paint and crayons; other students work in sketchbooks while groups take turns at the mural. The lesson’s focus is representing community through color, rather than copying a single finished image.

How it differs from Sean Scully’s Wall of Light
Sean Scully’s Wall of Light is a separate body of artwork, not the first-grade mural lesson. The Metropolitan Museum of Art says Scully began the series in 1998 after additional trips to Mexico. It spans paintings, watercolors, pastels, and aquatints. In the paintings, closely fitted rectangular, bricklike forms create horizontal and vertical groupings, with layered color and variations between light and dark. The Met’s overview of the series

What the title does not identify
“Wall of Color” alone does not establish which artwork or activity a reader means. The NUMI lesson uses that exact title, while Scully’s related-sounding series is called Wall of Light. The Great Wall of Los Angeles is another distinct mural: SPARC describes it as a mural about California history and the contributions of ethnic peoples, begun in 1974 and completed over six summers with youth, families, artists, historians, and community members.
