How to create the image in ChatGPT
1. Open ChatGPT Images
Open ChatGPT on the web or in the mobile app. You can either start in a regular conversation and ask ChatGPT to create or edit an image, or open the Images area when it is available in your interface. OpenAI says ChatGPT Images is available on the web, iOS, and Android, and that ChatGPT Images 2.0 is available across all tiers.
Interface labels can vary by account, app version, and rollout. If you do not see an Images tab, start a new conversation and look for the composer’s image-generation or attachment controls.
2. Upload a photo
Use the composer’s attachment control to select an image from your device. You may also be able to use an image already created in the conversation. After the upload finishes, describe the transformation you want.

For the best chance of preserving the person or subject, begin with a reasonably clear image. A well-lit photo with the subject visible is easier to transform than a heavily blurred, tiny, or obstructed image. This is a practical quality suggestion—not a guarantee that every facial feature, hand, object, or item of clothing will be reproduced correctly.
3. Use a descriptive, rights-conscious prompt
Paste or adapt this starter prompt:
Transform this uploaded photo into an original hand-painted Japanese animation-inspired illustration. Preserve the subject’s pose, approximate composition, expression, clothing, and important facial features. Use delicate linework, warm watercolor backgrounds, soft natural light, expressive eyes, gentle environmental detail, and a storybook atmosphere. Do not add existing film characters, logos, copyrighted scenes, official artwork, or readable text.
This prompt describes visual qualities rather than asking ChatGPT to reproduce a particular film frame or official artwork. It is editorial guidance, not an OpenAI-prescribed formula or a legal guarantee. A style description alone does not resolve rights issues involving the original photo, recognizable people, logos, third-party artwork, or other protected material.
4. Let ChatGPT generate the first version
Wait for the image to finish rendering, then inspect more than the face. Check the hands, eyes, clothing patterns, background objects, signs, jewelry, shadows, and any text. Image models can alter small details even when the overall composition looks convincing.
If the result is too far from the source, do not immediately rewrite the entire prompt. A focused follow-up instruction is usually easier to evaluate.

Useful refinement prompts
ChatGPT can make conversational edits to an existing image. Ask for one or two changes at a time so you can tell which instruction helped.
Preserve the subject and change the background
Keep the face, pose, clothing, and overall subject recognizable. Replace the background with a quiet meadow at golden hour, using an original storybook landscape with warm watercolor textures.
Correct unwanted people or objects
Preserve the original clothing colors and the main subject’s expression. Remove the extra person in the background and reconstruct the surrounding scenery naturally. Do not add logos or readable text.

Adjust the light and linework
Keep the subject’s identity, pose, and composition. Make the linework softer and the natural lighting warmer, with subtle watercolor shading and gentle environmental detail.
Replace a distracting setting
Keep the main subject and clothing unchanged. Remove the existing background and create an original seaside village with soft atmospheric perspective. Do not use a recognizable movie location, official artwork, or existing fictional characters.
Use “keep” or “preserve” for details that matter, but verify the output anyway. Natural-language instructions improve control; they do not lock every pixel to the uploaded photo.
How to fix one part with the selection tool
For a localized correction, open the generated image in ChatGPT’s editor and use the selection tool to highlight the area you want to change. Select a hand, face, background object, or item of clothing, then describe the correction in the prompt.

In the selected area, correct the hand so it has a natural shape and five fingers. Match the existing lighting, linework, and skin tone. Leave the rest of the image unchanged.

The editor includes undo and redo controls. However, OpenAI cautions that selections are not always precise and an edit can extend beyond the highlighted region. The selection is a request for a local change, not a perfect mask.
Inspect the whole image after every localized edit. Pay special attention to the selection boundary, nearby facial features, hands, text, patterned clothing, and objects that touch the selected area. If the edit damages another part of the picture, undo it or make a new, more narrowly worded correction.
Choose an aspect ratio, then save the result
Use the aspect-ratio picker in the image interface when available, or state the desired shape in your prompt—for example, “make this a vertical portrait composition” or “use a wide landscape composition.” The exact choices can vary by interface.

When you are satisfied, ChatGPT provides options to copy, save, or share the image. You can also revisit images from the ChatGPT Images area. Download the finished file if you want to keep a local copy or prepare it for another service.
OpenAI’s Library documentation says uploaded and created files may be saved in Library. Files uploaded in Temporary Chat are not saved to the account Library. For ordinary saved files, you can delete them from Library; the documentation says deleted files are scheduled for permanent deletion from OpenAI systems within 30 days, subject to stated exceptions. That is different from an upload disappearing immediately after you close the conversation.
Why “free” does not mean unlimited
The accurate promise is available to try for free, not unlimited free generations.
Free users may encounter separate limits for:
- Image creation.
- Image uploads.
- Other advanced ChatGPT features.
If ChatGPT temporarily stops allowing image creation or uploads, the feature may not have been removed. Wait for the relevant limit to reset and try again. Because OpenAI can change the thresholds and reset behavior, avoid relying on a fixed number of free images unless you have checked the current Free Tier information immediately before publishing or using the service.

Studio Ghibli’s official notice reserves rights in its titles, images, and website materials and generally requires permission for reproduction, transmission, exhibition, exploitation, or modification except where a legal exception applies. Do not describe an output as “official,” imply Studio Ghibli approved it, or use copied official material as the basis for a commercial design unless you have a defensible permission or legal basis.
OpenAI’s terms say that, between the user and OpenAI and to the extent permitted by applicable law, the user owns output. That does not mean every generated image is automatically free to sell. You remain responsible for the photo and other material you provide, the people and brands depicted, the instructions you give, and compliance with applicable law.

- Remove third-party logos, copied backgrounds, official movie stills, and recognizable protected characters unless they are rights-cleared.
- Do not imply endorsement by Studio Ghibli or any other artist, studio, or brand.
- Obtain appropriate consent before commercially publishing an image of a real person, particularly if the use could imply that person’s endorsement.
- Consider whether the result is sufficiently original and whether local copyright, publicity, trademark, or privacy rules apply.
A human review is especially important if the image is going on merchandise, into advertising, or into a paid publication. If the rights situation is unclear, get advice specific to your country and intended use rather than treating a style prompt as legal clearance.

Do not upload a sensitive personal image casually. OpenAI’s individual-user terms describe content use for providing, maintaining, developing, and improving services, complying with law, enforcing policies, and keeping services safe. They also describe an opt-out path for model training.
The exact controls available to you depend on your account and settings. Do not assume that every upload is automatically private, excluded from model improvement, or permanently deleted as soon as you remove it from view. Review your account’s current data controls before uploading family photos, identity documents, confidential work, medical images, or anything else you would not want handled by an online service.
What C2PA and SynthID do—and do not do
OpenAI says images generated with ChatGPT, Codex, and its API include C2PA metadata and SynthID watermarking or related provenance signals. These signals can help indicate that an image may have been generated with OpenAI tools.
They are not:
- Permission to use Studio Ghibli characters or artwork.
- Proof that you own the original uploaded photo.
- A guarantee that commercial use is lawful.
- A substitute for checking consent, copyright, trademark, or publicity rights.
Where appropriate, a transparent caption could say: “AI-transformed from my original photo using ChatGPT.” Use disclosure to explain the image’s provenance, not to claim that the disclosure clears third-party rights.

Can you print the finished image?
Yes, you can save or download the result and then investigate a photo-printing service if you want a physical copy. Before ordering, confirm that your intended image is rights-cleared for printing. A transformed image containing a copied film frame, official artwork, logo, or recognizable protected character can create a different legal problem from a transformation of your own photo.
Printing is an optional next step, not part of the ChatGPT workflow itself. No particular printing provider is recommended here; availability, affiliate programs, U.S. coverage, and policies for AI-generated images should be checked separately before choosing one.
Final checklist before sharing
- Source: Do you own the photo or have permission to use it?
- Prompt: Did you request an original animation-inspired treatment rather than copied official artwork?
- Output: Did you inspect the face, hands, text, clothing, and background?
- Rights: Did you remove unlicensed logos, characters, movie stills, and recognizable protected scenes?
- People: Do you have appropriate consent for public or commercial use of recognizable individuals?
- Privacy: Have you checked your ChatGPT data settings and considered whether the image is suitable to upload?
- Disclosure: Would a note about AI transformation make the image’s provenance clearer to viewers?
- File: Did you save the version you actually reviewed, at the aspect ratio you need?
The safest and simplest version of this trend is a personal photo that you are entitled to use, transformed into an original hand-painted illustration, carefully reviewed, and described honestly as AI-generated or AI-transformed—not as an official Studio Ghibli product.
