Fusible web is a heat-activated adhesive that helps hold a fabric appliqué in place. Its paper backing makes it easier to trace, cut, and position a shape. For a neat result, choose web suited to your project—especially if you plan to stitch through it—and follow that product’s pressing directions.
What fusible web does
Paper-backed fusible web bonds fabric to fabric when pressed with an iron. For appliqué, trace the design on the paper carrier, fuse the web to the back of the appliqué fabric, cut out the shape, peel off the paper, and fuse the shape to a background. The paper helps manage the shape during tracing and cutting.

Properties vary by product. For example, Pellon describes its EZ-Steam as paper-backed, pliable after fusing, and machine safe for sewing. Check the package for the specific web you use rather than assuming those features apply to all fusible webs.
Choose web for the project
Before starting, consider how the finished piece will be used and what the fabric can tolerate. Compare products on these points:

- PACKAGE INCLUDE: 20 sheets medium weight paper backed fusible web, which size is 8" x 12", designed and optimized for applique. Double sided fusible interfacing designed for gluing two items together.
- NO SEWING: This paper-backed fusible web will turn any fabric into a fusible fabric. Fuse fabric to fabric, or to any porous surface, such as wood or cardboard. Our fusible web (double-sided adhesive) creates a durable bond while preserving your material’s soft and malleable nature. Fusible bonding web will not leave marks on the fabric, makes strong and reliable work to take place of stitches in most crafts and repair.
- HIGH-QUALITY MATERIAL: The fusible Web is made from 100% thermoplastic adhesive polymer resin, ensuring durability, sturdiness, and eco-friendliness. It is similar to non-woven fabric at normal temperature, but it melts and becomes sticky at high temperature (275-320F). It handles well, is sheer and doesn't add bulk to your fused piece and bonds firmly once cooled.
- SECURE SEALING: The stitch witchery provides a tight seal to the fabric, ensuring a firm bond even after washing. They are designed to withstand long-term use, providing durability and reliability in your projects.SECURE SEALING: The stitch witchery provides a tight seal to the fabric, ensuring a firm bond even after washing. - WIDE APPLICATION: Fusible bonding web tape allows for a wider range of materials that can be bonded. They are ideal for hemming pillowcases, double backing ribbons, curtains, repairing broken jeans, trousers, dresses, pants, shirts, and more. Additionally, they are suitable for hemming broken of cloths, fabric arts and craft., offering endless possibilities for creativity.
- Will you stitch the appliqué? Choose a lightweight web explicitly suitable for stitching through. AllPeopleQuilt recommends this for stitched raw-edge appliqué; see its fusible-web appliqué method.
- How much stiffness or bulk is acceptable? Fusible products differ in how they feel after pressing. Test the chosen web on a fabric scrap.
- Would temporary repositioning help? Some products have placement characteristics that may help; Pellon describes EZ-Steam as pressure-sensitive for placement. Confirm the intended use on the product label.
- Can the fabric take the required heat? Check the fabric and web instructions, and test a scrap before applying the product to the project.
Fusible web for appliqué bonds layers together; interfacing may serve a separate stabilizing purpose. “Web interfacing” and products such as Stitch Witchery are not reliable interchangeable labels for every material. Their exact function depends on the product, so check its packaging rather than choosing by name alone.
How to use paper-backed fusible web
- Choose the design, fabrics, and web. Make sure the product is suitable for the intended result, and for stitching if the appliqué will be sewn. Read its instructions for iron temperature, steam or dry pressing, pressure, and timing.
- Trace the shape on the paper. If the design has a definite direction—such as a letter or a bird facing one way—trace its mirror image so the finished appliqué faces the intended direction. Leave space around the traced line for trimming.
- Rough-cut and fuse to the appliqué fabric. Cut around the traced shape, leaving a small margin. Place the fusible side against the wrong side of the fabric and press as directed. In AllPeopleQuilt’s method, lift and reposition the iron instead of sliding it. Let the piece cool before proceeding.
- Cut on the traced line and peel. Once cool, cut the fabric accurately along the design line, then remove the paper carrier.
- Position and fuse to the background. Place the shape where you want it and press according to the web’s instructions. For a layered design, place and fuse the largest, bottom shape first, then add the smaller shapes, following the layering approach described by AllPeopleQuilt.
- Stitch if the design calls for it. If the web is labeled sewable, finish the edge with a suitable straight or decorative stitch as desired.
Press safely and avoid over-fusing
There is no universal iron setting or pressing time for fusible web. Use the directions for your specific product, including whether to use steam or a dry iron. Pellon advises testing fusibles for compatibility with the fabric and iron temperature, and AllPeopleQuilt likewise directs users to follow the chosen web’s instructions.

- This paper-backed fusible web will turn any fabric into a fusible fabric. Fuse fabric to fabric, or to any porous surface, such as wood or cardboard. Fabric will retain its natural hand and will not get inflexible or stiffen.

Brother’s directions for its own appliqué contact sheet give a medium setting of 140–160 °C (284–320 °F) and about 20 seconds as an example. Those settings apply to that product, not to fusible web generally; Brother also warns that timing varies with the material and that excessive pressing can scorch or melt it. See Brother’s product-specific instructions.
- Test the web on a scrap of the project fabric first.
- Use the specified iron temperature and steam or dry method; avoid prolonged pressing.
- Keep exposed adhesive away from the iron’s soleplate.
- Allow fused pieces to cool before peeling or cutting when the instructions call for it.
Over-fusing can harden the adhesive and make fabric stiff. Fusible adhesive may also be undesirable in an heirloom project. The Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles describes fusible appliqué as quick and convenient while advising makers to follow manufacturer directions for pressing and laundering; see its fusible appliqué technique guide. Do not assume the method suits every fiber, fabric, or finished item.
