Make an hourglass quilt block by sewing together triangle pairs cut from two layered squares. In AllPeopleQuilt’s tutorial, the squares are cut 1.25 inches larger than the intended finished block; its example uses 5.5-inch squares for a 4.25-inch finished block. The method keeps the outer edges on straight grain and places bias edges toward the block’s interior, where careful handling helps prevent stretching.

What you need
- Two squares of quilting cotton in contrasting colors, cut to the size your pattern calls for.
- A rotary cutter and quilting ruler for cutting the diagonal X.
- A sewing machine and thread, plus a leader cloth to help start stitching cleanly.
- An iron and a way to trim small dog ears after piecing.
The tutorial does not require a particular sewing machine; it features a Baby Lock Crescendo as part of the video presentation.

Choose the square size
For this tutorial’s method, cut each square 1.25 inches larger than the block’s intended finished size. For example, the video uses 5.5-inch squares to make a block that finishes at 4.25 inches. These are the tutorial’s measurements, so follow your quilt pattern if it specifies different cutting dimensions.

Cut the triangles with an X
- Place the two fabric squares right sides together and align their edges.
- With a rotary cutter and quilting ruler, cut diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner, then make a second diagonal cut between the remaining corners. The X divides the layered squares into four pairs of triangles.
- Keep the cut pieces layered as much as possible. In this arrangement, the straight grain lies along the outside edges and the bias edges are toward the inside of the block. As the presenter puts it, “You do have some bias edges to work with.” Avoid unnecessary handling of those diagonal edges so they are less likely to stretch.
Sew the triangle pairs
- Keeping each pair right sides together, sew along a short straight edge with a quarter-inch seam allowance.
- Use a leader cloth when starting a seam. A pointed end can be drawn into the sewing machine’s feed dogs, and the leader cloth helps the seam begin cleanly.
- Press each seam allowance toward the darker triangle.
Join the pairs and finish the block
- Arrange the sewn pairs so the light and dark sections oppose one another to form the hourglass design.
- Match the center seams and nest them together; pressing the seam allowances in opposite directions helps them meet neatly.
- Sew the pairs together, then press the center seam.
- Trim the small dog ears at the corners so the block edges are square.
