Midjourney works best as an iterative visual-development system, not a one-prompt image machine. Define the image you need, generate several concepts, select the strongest composition, refine it with variations or editing tools, then check the result manually for anatomy, text, logos, likeness, and production quality.
This guide preserves the practical workflow popularized in 2025 but updates the version details: V8.1 became Midjourney’s default model on June 10, 2026. V7 remains important for Omni Reference, while several editing functions still use V6.1 behavior.

What Midjourney is good at
Midjourney can create concept art, editorial illustrations, product concepts, character designs, storyboards, moodboards, posters, covers, environments, patterns, social graphics, and starting frames for short image-to-video experiments.
It is particularly strong when you need many polished visual directions quickly. It is less dependable for perfect typography, exact logos, factual scenes, pixel-perfect replicas, or final brand artwork that must meet precise production specifications. Treat an attractive generation as a draft or visual asset—not automatically as finished design work.

Its Image Prompts are designed to influence content, composition, color, and broad visual direction. They are not a command to copy an input image exactly.
Before you start: choose the workflow and output
Log in at Midjourney, choose a subscription, and open the web Create page. The web interface is the clearest starting point for beginners: it includes the Imagine bar, image uploads, settings, personalization, folders, prompt search, and creation controls. Decide the destination before generating:
- Square social post or avatar:
--ar 1:1 - Portrait social post:
--ar 4:5 - Story or vertical video cover:

Generate the correct shape early. Cropping a square image into a vertical poster can remove the subject, reduce negative space, or damage the composition.
Create your first Midjourney image
- Open the Create page.
- Enter a prompt in the Imagine bar.
- Submit it with Enter or the send button.
- Review the generated grid and identify the strongest composition.
- Use variations, editing, or upscaling to develop the selected image.
- Download the result and inspect it at full size before using it.
Start with a clear visual objective rather than a list of fashionable keywords. The most useful prompt describes what is shown, where it is, how it looks, how it is lit, and how it should be framed.
A practical prompt formula
[subject] + [action or pose] + [environment] + [medium or visual style] + [lighting] + [color palette] + [mood] + [composition] --ar [ratio]Build the prompt from these parts:
- Subject: What should appear?
- Action: What is happening, or how is the subject posed?
- Environment: Where does the scene take place?
- Medium: Photograph, oil painting, ink illustration, collage, 3D render, or another visual medium.
- Lighting: Soft window light, overcast daylight, studio light, golden hour, neon, or rim lighting.
- Color: Muted teal and amber, monochrome, pastel, complementary, or high contrast.
- Mood: Calm, ominous, playful, clinical, luxurious, or contemplative.
- Composition: Close-up, wide shot, overhead, symmetrical, centered, or with generous negative space.
- Use case: Poster, book cover, product hero image, thumbnail, or phone wallpaper.
Concise direction usually beats a giant “magic prompt.” Too many competing adjectives can make the image less coherent. Midjourney’s prompting guidance likewise recommends clear descriptions organized around subject, medium, environment, lighting, color, mood, and composition.

Parameters go at the end of a prompt. The official parameter list is the definitive reference because syntax and availability can change.

Aspect ratio
Midjourney defaults to a square image. Use integer ratios, not decimal notation. Very wide or very tall formats can be less predictable, so leave room around important details and generate multiple compositions.

Stylize and Raw
--stylize 50 gives the wording more authority than a high stylize value, while --stylize 250 or higher allows more visual interpretation. This is a creative balance, not a guaranteed quality scale. If the output looks beautiful but ignores the brief, lower stylization and try --raw.
Chaos and negative prompting
Use a higher --chaos value when the four initial concepts are too similar. Use a lower value when you need controlled iteration. The --no parameter can suppress common distractions such as borders or watermarks, but image models do not treat it as an absolute exclusion rule.
V8.1 SD and HD
V8.1 supports standard-resolution generation and HD generation. Midjourney describes HD as 2K output without upscaling. The documentation lists approximately 0.8 GPU minutes for V8.1 SD and 1.3 GPU minutes for V8.1 HD. HD uses more GPU time, and editing an HD image can downscale it to SD before an upscale, so HD is not automatically the right choice at every stage.
Understand the model differences
V7 launched on April 3, 2025 and became the default on June 17, 2025. V8.1 launched on April 30, 2026 and became the default on June 10, 2026. V8.1 is the current default as of this guide’s publication, but a 2025 tutorial may contain V7-specific instructions.
Use V8.1 when you want the current default, prompt adherence, speed, or HD generation. Use V7 when a workflow depends on Omni Reference. Use an explicit version parameter when reproducibility matters; the same prompt can produce different results as models change.
Use references for composition, style, and identity
Reference tools solve different problems. Do not treat every uploaded image as an interchangeable “style reference.”

An Image Prompt can influence broad subject matter, composition, colors, and visual content. Upload supported formats such as PNG, GIF, WebP, JPG, or JPEG; the web Create page supports uploads up to 10 MB. Crop the reference to a similar aspect ratio to the desired output when possible.

Style Reference: preserve the visual language
A Style Reference is appropriate when you want to borrow qualities such as color treatment, texture, lighting, or general aesthetic while changing the subject.

Omni Reference: maintain a character or object
Omni Reference is a V7-only tool for carrying the appearance or form of one person, object, vehicle, or creature into new scenes. In Discord, the syntax is:
portrait of a traveler in a snowy mountain village --oref [image-url] --ow 150Only one image can be used as an Omni Reference. The default weight is --ow 100, and the documented range is 1–1,000. Midjourney recommends generally staying below 400 unless using very high stylization. Omni Reference costs twice the GPU time of regular V7 image generation and is incompatible with several workflows, including V6.1 inpainting or outpainting workflows, Fast Mode, Draft Mode, Conversational Mode, and --q 4.
Omni Reference can help maintain identity, but it does not guarantee an exact face, object, or character in every generation.
Personalization and moodboards
Personalization can help establish a recurring preference or brand direction. For important brand work, keep the model, aspect ratio, key wording, references, and major style settings stable. Save the successful prompt and reference files instead of relying on memory.
A repeatable consistency workflow
- Create a clean single-subject reference with clear visibility and neutral lighting.
- Use V7 with Omni Reference when identity or object form is the priority.
- Use a Style Reference when the brand’s color, texture, or visual language is the priority.
- Describe recurring traits consistently: wardrobe, age, materials, palette, camera treatment, and proportions.
- Change one major variable at a time.
- Keep the aspect ratio and model stable while developing a series.
- Save successful prompts, settings, image URLs, and reference images.
For brand work, separate the problems: Omni Reference supports identity consistency; Style Reference or Personalization supports visual style; aspect ratio and composition wording support layout consistency; external design software handles exact logos, typography, and final brand systems.
Refine an image instead of starting over
Choose the correction that matches the problem:
- Wrong concept: rewrite the prompt with the main subject first and regenerate.
- Right concept, wrong details: use variations or Remix.
- Right image, wrong framing: use Pan, Zoom Out, or the Editor.
- One area is wrong: use Vary Region or Editor-based inpainting.
- Need another output shape: set the aspect ratio early or use the Editor carefully.
- Need a larger file: upscale, but do not mistake upscaling for compositional repair.
- Need motion: use the finished image as a starting frame for video.
The Editor supports Remix, inpainting/Vary Region, Pan, and Zoom Out. Vary Region is useful for replacing a selected area while preserving the rest of the image.

There is an important version caveat: current documentation says several editing functions—including parts of the Editor, Pan, Zoom Out, and Vary Region—use V6.1 functionality even when the source image was generated with V8.1. The result may therefore behave differently from a fresh V8.1 generation.
Generate readable text and usable layouts
Midjourney supports text generation in versions 6 and later. Put the desired words in double quotation marks and explicitly describe them as text:

- Keep the phrase short.
- Use double quotation marks, not single quotation marks.
- Say “with the words” or “text.”
- Try Raw mode or lower stylization when lettering is unstable.
- Check every character at full size.
Text can still be misspelled or distorted. For publishing, advertising, packaging, posters, and client work, correct the typography in a design application. The same applies to logos, exact brand colors, legal notices, and precise alignment.
Design for the final platform

Generate several compositions rather than forcing one image to serve every channel. Ask for negative space when text will be added later, and avoid placing important details at extreme edges. Aspect ratio is not the same as final pixel dimensions, and HD does not automatically make a file print-ready: resolution, upscaling, color management, compression, and print requirements remain separate production concerns.

The image looks attractive but ignores the prompt
Common causes include too many competing instructions, high stylization, ambiguous wording, or an overly strong reference. Shorten the prompt, put the primary subject first, try --raw, lower stylization, remove one reference, and regenerate at a fixed aspect ratio.
The character or object is inconsistent
Use a clean single-subject reference, V7 with Omni Reference, stable identity wording, and one changed scene variable at a time. Poor lighting, multiple subjects, an incompatible model, or an extreme reference weight can all reduce consistency. Even with the correct workflow, exact identity preservation is not guaranteed.
The style is right but the subject changes
Move the aesthetic direction into a Style Reference and describe the subject explicitly in the text prompt. Do not ask one reference to control every aspect of the image.
Text is misspelled
Use a shorter quoted phrase, double quotation marks, Raw mode, and lower stylization. Correct important text externally rather than repeatedly regenerating a long headline.

Hands, faces, jewelry, or repeated objects look wrong
Generate alternatives, vary the affected region, and inspect the result at full size. Remove unnecessary details from the prompt and do not assume that an upscale will repair anatomy or repetition.
Editing changes too much
Use a smaller selected region, simplify the edit instruction, and remember that some V8.1 images pass through V6.1-based editing behavior. If the composition is fundamentally wrong, regenerate instead of forcing a local edit.
GPU time disappears quickly
Use SD while exploring, reserve HD for stronger candidates, avoid Omni Reference when identity consistency is unnecessary, limit repeated large batches, and use Relax Mode where your plan supports it.
Commercial use, privacy, and rights
Midjourney’s stated commercial-use terms say that subscribers own the images and videos they create, including after cancellation. However, this is not the same as a universal guarantee of copyright protection. Copyright rules vary by jurisdiction, and Midjourney does not provide legal advice.
Important limits and risks include:
- If you upscale another user’s image, the original creator owns that image and permission is required.
- You must have the right to upload reference images, faces, logos, and third-party creative work.
- Commercial use does not remove trademark, publicity-rights, privacy, contract, or copyright risks.
- Recognizable people, brands, and copyrighted characters may require additional review.
- Businesses grossing more than $1 million annually must use a Pro or Mega plan for commercial use under Midjourney’s stated plan terms.
Privacy is plan-dependent. Stealth Mode is available on Pro and Mega, while lower-tier creations may be visible in public areas. Use the appropriate privacy setting for unreleased products, client work, confidential concepts, and sensitive references.

The following prices were listed in Midjourney’s official comparison documentation during the August 2026 research period. Plans and features can change, so verify the current page before subscribing.

Annual billing is shown as approximately 20% cheaper than monthly billing. Standard, Pro, and Mega support unlimited image generation in Relax Mode. Unlimited video generation in Relax Mode is limited to Pro and Mega, according to the current comparison documentation.
Choose Basic if you are learning or generating occasionally. Choose Standard if relaxed image generation matters more than privacy. Choose Pro or Mega if you need Stealth Mode, substantially more Fast GPU time, regular video generation, or commercial use for a company above the stated revenue threshold.
Video and downstream production
Midjourney can turn an image into a starting point for motion experiments. The current video documentation lists five-second videos, with 480p SD and 720p HD available on eligible plans. Treat this as a short generative-video step, not a replacement for a complete edit, sound mix, color workflow, or delivery pipeline.
For serious work, finish the image in conventional design or editing software. Midjourney is excellent for exploration and visual development, but typography, logos, retouching, precise layouts, brand systems, color correction, and print preparation still benefit from dedicated tools.

- Does the composition serve the intended platform?
- Are the subject, pose, perspective, and environment correct?
- Do hands, faces, eyes, jewelry, and repeated objects hold up at full size?
- Is every word spelled correctly?
- Are logos and brand elements accurate, or should they be replaced externally?
- Are there unwanted borders, watermarks, artifacts, or edge distortions?
- Does the image resemble a protected or recognizable third-party work too closely?
- Do you have permission to use every uploaded reference?
- Is the resolution, color mode, compression, and file format appropriate for the final use?
- Have you saved the prompt, model, parameters, references, and final version?
The most reliable Midjourney method
Start with a clear subject and a defined output format. Use a concise prompt, generate multiple concepts, and change one major variable at a time. Use Image Prompts for broad visual influence, Style References for aesthetic language, and Omni Reference in V7 when maintaining a character or object is the priority. Refine promising images instead of endlessly rewriting everything, but move typography, logos, legal review, and final production into the appropriate design tools.
