Microsoft Paint layers are primarily a Windows 11 feature. If your Paint window has a Layers button, you can create separate drawing surfaces, reorder them, hide or show them, duplicate them, erase to transparency, and merge them. If you use Windows 10 and the button is missing, your installation may not include the modern layer interface; updating Paint may help, but it is not guaranteed to add the feature.

Microsoft introduced the modern Paint layer system in a Windows 11 update. The feature was initially released through Windows Insider versions beginning with Paint 11.2308.18.0. Microsoft describes support for adding, removing, reordering, showing and hiding, duplicating, and merging layers, as well as transparency in the canvas.

That does not mean that every installation of Paint on Windows 10 or Windows 11 has the same controls. Paint’s interface and capabilities can vary according to the installed app version, Windows build, and—particularly for newer changes—the release channel.
To check your installation:
- Open Start, search for Paint, and open the Microsoft Paint app.
- Look across the toolbar for a Layers button. On a narrow window, some toolbar controls may be condensed into a panel or overflow area.
- If the button is present, select it to open the Layers side panel.
- If it is missing, open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates and install available Paint updates.
- Close and reopen Paint after updating.
A missing Layers button is not necessarily a mistake on your part. It can indicate an older Paint build, a feature rollout that has not reached your installation, an unsupported operating-system/app combination, organizational restrictions on Store apps, or a changed interface in a newer release.
What a Paint layer does
A layer is an independently managed image surface stacked above or below other surfaces. Paint combines the visible layers to produce the image on your canvas.
An opaque pixel on an upper layer can cover pixels underneath it. A transparent area allows the lower layer to show through. This makes it possible to keep a background, sketch, line drawing, colors, details, and text separate instead of painting everything permanently onto one surface.
For a simple illustration, a useful bottom-to-top arrangement is:
- Background: a solid color or background image
- Rough sketch: an initial construction drawing
- Line art: cleaned-up outlines
- Flat colors: the main colored areas
- Details and highlights: texture, shadows, and finishing marks
- Text or labels: captions and annotations
Paint’s layer system is simpler than the one in professional image editors. Do not assume that your build includes blend modes, layer masks, named groups, or advanced non-destructive adjustment layers. The confirmed core functions are layer creation and management, transparency, duplication, deletion, reordering, visibility, and merging.

How to create a new layer
- Open an existing image in Paint or choose New to create a canvas.
- Select Layers to open the side panel.
- Use the panel’s command to add a new layer. The exact icon or label can vary between Paint releases.
- Draw, paste, add text, or place another image element while the new layer is selected.
- Click a different layer in the panel before editing that part of the artwork.
The selected layer is the active editing target. A common beginner mistake is to think a mark has disappeared when it was actually drawn on a different layer than expected. Before drawing, check which layer is highlighted in the panel.
For example, you could create a background first, add a sketch above it, then create a line-art layer above the sketch. When the line art is finished, you can hide the sketch without changing the clean outlines.
Change the order of layers
Select a layer in the Layers panel and use the available reorder controls or drag/reposition behavior offered by your Paint build. Moving a layer upward places its content above more of the composition; moving it downward places it behind other content.
Layer order matters whenever two areas overlap. A white or colored background layer at the top can cover the entire drawing beneath it. Moving that background to the bottom should reveal the other layers again.

- An opaque layer has been moved above it.
- The layer’s visibility has been turned off.
- You are looking at a different active layer than the one containing the object.
- The object was placed outside the visible canvas.
- The object is present but covered by another opaque mark on the same or a higher layer.
Show or hide a layer
Use the visibility control associated with a layer to hide or reveal it temporarily. Hiding a layer does not delete its contents; it changes whether that layer contributes to the visible composite.
Visibility toggles are useful for:
- Comparing a sketch with the finished line art
- Inspecting the background separately
- Checking whether a detail improves the image
- Preparing a version without labels or annotations
- Comparing an original element with an edited duplicate
Before exporting, check the visibility state of every layer you expect to appear. A hidden layer will not appear in the visible exported image.

Duplicate a layer before experimenting
To make a copy, select the layer you want to preserve and use the Layers panel’s duplicate command. The exact icon name may differ between releases, so use the command whose function is to duplicate or copy the selected layer.
Duplication is useful when you want to:
- Keep a backup before making a destructive edit
- Repeat an element in another position
- Try a different color or effect while retaining the original
- Preserve clean line art before painting over a copy
After duplicating, make sure the copy is the active layer before editing it. Otherwise, you may modify the original while believing you are working on the duplicate.
If you draw frequently, an optional USB drawing tablet for Windows can provide more precise pen input than a mouse. It is not required for Paint layers, and compatibility, drivers, pressure behavior, and availability depend on the particular tablet and Windows setup.
Delete a layer safely
- Click the layer you want to remove in the Layers panel.
- Confirm that it is the selected layer—not merely a layer you intended to select.
- Use the panel’s delete or remove command.
- Inspect the remaining composition for gaps, unexpected transparency, or changes in alignment.
Save an editable copy before deleting a major layer. Paint’s current development and Insider release notes have included fixes for layer-related behavior, including an issue where deleting the active layer could leave the layer list inconsistent. That is another reason to keep important project copies and to treat exact behavior as release-dependent.
Undo may help during the current editing session, but do not rely on Undo being available after you close and reopen a file.
Use transparency and the eraser
Modern Paint layers support transparency. When pixels are removed from a layer, Paint can display a checkerboard pattern in those areas. With multiple layers present, erasing from an upper layer can reveal artwork on the layers below.
To remove part of a layer:
- Select the layer containing the unwanted pixels.
- Choose the Eraser or another supported removal tool.
- Erase the unwanted area.
- Look for the checkerboard transparency pattern.
- Inspect the layers underneath to confirm that the intended artwork is showing through.
Transparency is not the same as white paint. White pixels are still opaque and can cover lower layers. Transparent pixels contain no visible color, so the layers underneath can appear through them.
Some listed Insider releases also include adjustable eraser transparency, including Paint version 11.2605.61.0. Treat that control as version- and channel-dependent; it may not be present in the standard Paint installation on your PC.

Merge layers only when you are ready
Paint can merge layers into a combined result. Merging is useful when you have finished a stage of the artwork and want to simplify the layer stack, but it reduces the ability to edit those components separately.
Use this safer sequence:
- Save the editable project first, if your version offers Paint project files.
- Duplicate the relevant layer or save a second project copy.
- Select the layer involved in the merge.
- Choose the Layers panel’s merge command.
- Inspect the result for correct ordering, transparency, alignment, and appearance.
Do not assume that every release uses a command called Merge Down, or that it merges in exactly the same direction. Microsoft confirms merging as a capability, but the precise label and behavior should be verified in the interface on your build.
Save layered work as an editable project
If your Windows 11 Paint version offers Save as project, use it before major edits and before merging or deleting layers. Microsoft introduced editable .paint project files so users can resume work with the project structure available in supported versions.
A practical workflow is:
- Save the initial project before doing substantial work.
- Save another copy before merging, deleting, or making a major color change.
- Continue editing the project file while you still need separate layers.
- Export a PNG or JPEG only when you need a shareable or broadly compatible final image.
- Keep the project file even after exporting, if you may need to revise the artwork.
The reviewed Microsoft material does not establish a complete interoperability specification for .paint files or guarantee that every Windows 10 Paint installation can open them with the layer structure intact. Treat project-file support as dependent on the Paint version and operating system.
Export a finished image without losing the source
PNG or JPEG is appropriate for sharing, uploading, printing through another application, or using the finished composite elsewhere. For this workflow, treat an ordinary PNG or JPEG export as a flattened final image: it preserves the visible result, not a guaranteed independently editable Paint layer stack.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBefore exporting:
- Turn on every layer that should appear.
- Hide temporary sketches, guides, or notes that should not be visible.
- Check that the top-to-bottom order is correct.
- Inspect transparent edges and erased areas.
- Save the editable Paint project separately when available.
After exporting, you can reopen the PNG or JPEG to check the final appearance. Do not use that reopened image as evidence that the original layer structure survived; it is the rendered image, not necessarily the editable project.
Windows 10: what to do if Layers is unavailable
Windows 10 users should identify the application and version they actually have. The modern layers announcement concerns the Windows 11 Paint app, while Microsoft’s general installation and Store troubleshooting guidance covers Paint installations on Windows 10 and Windows 11 without promising that every feature is available on both systems.

Use this decision path:
- You see Layers: open the panel and follow the layer instructions above.
- You do not see Layers: update Paint through Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates, then restart Paint.
- The button is still missing: your Paint build may not support the modern layer feature. Do not keep following instructions that require a control you cannot see.
- You need layer editing: use a supported Windows 11 installation with a compatible Paint release or choose another image editor that explicitly supports layers.
Windows 10 reaching end of support on October 14, 2025 does not automatically remove Paint from your PC. It does mean that Windows 10 is a materially different context for current app features and future updates.
Troubleshooting checklist
The Layers button is missing
- Confirm that you opened Microsoft Paint, not Paint 3D or another image application.
- Check the toolbar and any condensed or overflow controls.
- Open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates.
- Update Windows if updates are available, then restart the computer or at least restart Paint.
- Check whether a work or school administrator restricts Microsoft Store apps or updates.
- If the button remains absent, treat the feature as unavailable in that installation.
Paint crashes or behaves incorrectly
- Close and reopen Paint.
- Install available Windows and Microsoft Store updates.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Paint > Advanced options.
- Select Repair when available; this attempts to fix the app without removing its data.
- If Repair does not help, consider Reset. Resetting can remove app data or settings, so save your artwork first.
- If necessary, uninstall and reinstall Paint using Microsoft’s supported procedure.
Layer behavior can change as Microsoft fixes bugs and rolls out updates, especially in Insider builds. If a command behaves differently from the instructions here, use the function’s description in your installed panel rather than relying on an assumed icon, keyboard shortcut, or menu name.
Paint layers: the limits to remember
- Not every Windows 10 Paint installation has the modern Layers panel.
- PNG and JPEG should be treated as flattened output for this workflow.
- Do not assume that a keyboard shortcut exists for every layer operation.
- Do not expect Photoshop-equivalent blend modes, masks, groups, or adjustment layers unless your specific build visibly provides them.
- Save a project copy before merging or deleting layers.
- Check layer visibility before exporting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use layers in Paint on Windows 10?
Possibly, but you should not assume that every Windows 10 Paint installation supports them. Update Paint through Microsoft Store and restart the app. If the Layers button still does not appear, that installation likely does not include the modern Windows 11 layer interface.
How do I make a transparent background in Paint?
Select the layer containing the pixels you want to remove and use the Eraser or another supported removal method. A checkerboard pattern indicates transparency. White paint is not transparency: white pixels remain opaque and can cover layers underneath.
Do PNG files preserve Paint layers?
Treat a PNG or JPEG as a flattened export containing the visible composite, not as a guaranteed editable layer stack. Keep the editable Paint project separately when your version supports Save as project and .paint files.
Why did my drawing disappear after I moved a layer?
The layer may have been moved below an opaque background or another covering layer, hidden with its visibility control, or edited while a different layer was active. Check visibility, layer order, and the selected layer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I merge my Paint layers?
Merge only when you no longer need to edit the affected components separately. Save an editable project or duplicate the artwork first, then inspect the merged result for transparency, ordering, and alignment.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Paint layers are a Windows 11-oriented feature, not a guaranteed part of classic Paint on Windows 10. Look for the Layers button, update Paint if necessary, and keep your work in an editable project while you are still revising it. Use PNG or JPEG for the final visible image, but do not rely on those exports to preserve separate layers.
