In current desktop Photoshop, select the layer you want to edit, press E (or choose the Eraser tool from the toolbar), select Brush, Pencil, or Block in the Options bar, adjust the brush settings, and drag over the pixels to remove. On an unlocked layer this normally creates transparency; on a locked Background layer Photoshop fills the area with the background color instead. Duplicate the layer first whenever you may need the original pixels.

What Photoshop’s Eraser tool actually does

The standard Eraser removes pixels from the active layer. It does not automatically rebuild the background. If another layer is underneath, that layer becomes visible; if there is no artwork underneath, the erased area shows Photoshop’s checkerboard transparency pattern. The checkerboard is only an editing indicator and is not exported as part of the image.

At 100% opacity, a stroke can remove pixels completely. Lower opacity leaves partial transparency, which is useful for gradual blending. Direct erasing is destructive to that layer, although Undo, History, or a duplicate layer may provide recovery. For important work, a layer mask is usually safer.

Adobe’s current desktop workflow is documented in its Eraser tool guide.

Use the Eraser tool: step by step

  1. Open the image and select the correct layer. In the Layers panel, click the layer containing the pixels you want to remove. Do not assume the layer selected when you opened the file is the right one.
  2. Protect the original. Choose Layer > Duplicate Layer, or press Ctrl+J (Windows) or Command+J (macOS). Hide the original duplicate if you want a clean backup.
  3. Select the Eraser. Click the Eraser icon in the toolbar or press E. If another eraser variant is showing, click and hold the icon to reveal the standard Eraser, Background Eraser, and Magic Eraser.
  4. Choose a mode. Start with Brush for ordinary photo cleanup. Use Pencil or Block only when their hard, specialized edges are appropriate.
  5. Set the brush. Choose a size that covers the area without crossing an edge. Use higher Hardness for crisp graphic edges and lower Hardness for gradual photographic transitions.
  6. Set Opacity and Flow. Use 100% Opacity for complete removal. Lower Opacity or Flow lets you build the effect gradually and preserve more edge detail.
  7. Paint over the unwanted pixels. Drag with a mouse, trackpad, or stylus. Release frequently so each stroke is easier to undo, and change size as you move from broad areas to fine edges.
  8. Inspect the result. Zoom in around the edge, then zoom out to judge it in the complete composition. Put a temporary contrasting layer underneath to reveal halos or missed pixels.

Undo a recent stroke with Ctrl+Z (Windows) or Command+Z (macOS).

Eraser modes and settings

Control What it does Practical use
Brush A round brush with adjustable softness and strength. Best general-purpose choice for photos and painted transparency.
Pencil Produces a hard, pixel-sharp edge. Pixel art or crisp, deliberately stepped edges.
Block Uses a fixed square tip and does not provide opacity control. Precise square removal or pixel-level work.
Size Sets the eraser-tip diameter. Large for open areas; small near a subject’s outline.
Hardness Controls how quickly the edge fades. 100% is crisp; low values feather the transition. Too soft can create halos.
Opacity Limits how much one stroke can erase. 100% removes completely; lower values create partial transparency.
Flow Controls how quickly the effect builds while you hold and move the brush. Low Flow gives controlled buildup; high Flow removes faster. It is not simply another Opacity slider.

Why erasing may fill with white (or another color)

A locked layer named Background, and some locked transparent layers, cannot expose transparency in the ordinary way. Photoshop fills the erased area with the current background color instead. This often looks like the Eraser is painting white.

Erase to History

In the Eraser tool’s Options bar, enable Erase to History, then drag over an area to restore it to an earlier image state. Hold Alt (Windows) or Option (macOS) while dragging to switch to this mode temporarily. Restoration works only while the desired earlier state remains in Photoshop’s History.

Use a duplicate or mask

A duplicate layer lets you copy back untouched pixels. A layer mask is more flexible: add a mask, paint black to hide an area, and paint white to reveal it again. Gray or low-opacity painting creates partial concealment without deleting the source pixels.

Standard Eraser, Background Eraser, and Magic Eraser

Tool How it removes pixels Best fit and cautions
Standard Eraser You paint manually with a brush, pencil, or block tip. Small cleanup and controlled transparency. It can remove foreground detail if you paint too far.
Background Eraser Samples the color under its crosshair and erases matching colors as you drag. Useful when subject and background contrast clearly. Sampling, Limits, Tolerance, and Protect Foreground Color control the result; similar subject colors, hair, fur, and translucent edges can be damaged.
Magic Eraser Removes similarly colored pixels with a click. Good for mostly solid-color regions. Tolerance ranges from 0–255: lower values stay closer to the clicked color, higher values remove a broader range. Anti-aliased smooths edges, Contiguous restricts removal to connected pixels, Sample All Layers reads visible layers, and Opacity allows partial removal.

Adobe explains the related tools in its retouch-tools overview, with separate documentation for the Background Eraser and Magic Eraser.

Choosing the right method for a background

  • Consistent color and a clearly separated subject: Try Background Eraser, reducing Tolerance if it starts eating into the subject.
  • Mostly solid-color background: Try Magic Eraser with a low-to-moderate Tolerance and Contiguous enabled. Click additional regions only as needed.
  • Hair, fur, glass, smoke, or complex edges: Make a selection, refine it with a mask, or use Select and Mask. Color-based erasers commonly leave halos or remove fine detail.
  • Clean geometric cutout: Use selections, the Pen tool, paths, or a vector mask for a controlled edge.

When the Eraser is the wrong tool

If you want the area filled rather than transparent, erasing is not the operation you need. Photoshop’s Remove tool attempts to replace a distraction with surrounding or generated content; it is different from deleting pixels. Adobe’s Remove tool guide describes Auto, Generative AI on, and Generative AI off modes.

Goal Usually better choice
Hide an area reversibly Layer mask
Remove a person or object and reconstruct the background Remove tool, Healing Brush, Clone Stamp, or Generative Fill
Select a subject before cutting out its background Object Selection, Quick Selection, or Select Subject, followed by a mask
Repair texture after removal Healing Brush, Clone Stamp, Remove tool, or Generative Fill

Troubleshooting checklist

  • Nothing happens: Verify the active layer, selection boundaries, layer lock, brush size, Opacity, and Flow. A tiny brush or extremely low settings can look inactive.
  • The result is fuzzy: Increase Hardness, reduce brush size, zoom in, and avoid repeated passes over the edge. A mask gives finer control.
  • Too much disappeared: Undo, use Erase to History, restore from the duplicate, or paint white on a mask.
  • A halo remains: Reduce Background Eraser Tolerance, use Contiguous or a more selective sampling method, and refine the edge on a mask against a contrasting background.
  • The background was not automatically replaced: That is expected. The Eraser creates transparency; use a retouching or generative tool when replacement pixels are required.

Photoshop on the web

These toolbar instructions describe the current desktop application. In Photoshop on the web, use Paint > Eraser. The web interface exposes brush presets plus Size, Hardness, Flow, Opacity, Angle, Roundness, Smoothing, and pressure controls. Adobe’s separate web instructions apply; do not assume the desktop toolbar layout is identical.

Best-practice summary

Use the standard Eraser for quick, deliberate pixel cleanup on a disposable or duplicated layer. Start with Brush mode, vary Size as you work, match Hardness to the edge, and lower Opacity or Flow when blending. If the edit may change, use a layer mask instead; it hides pixels without throwing them away and lets you revise the result at any time.
