What a “tuxedo jacket with tails” means
The search phrase usually refers to an evening tailcoat, also called a dress coat. It is cut away at the front and has long rear panels; the Belgian Federal Public Service Foreign Affairs describes the panels as reaching the knees and the jacket as one that does not close. That shape belongs to white tie, also called evening dress. A dinner jacket—the usual tuxedo—belongs to black tie. Adding a white bow tie or waistcoat to a regular tuxedo does not turn it into a tailcoat or make it a white-tie outfit. Men’s Wearhouse also distinguishes the white-tie tailcoat from a standard black-tie tuxedo.

Check the invitation before choosing the coat
Use the exact dress code, not the general impression that an event is “formal.” The Belgian protocol guide says the invitation should specify White Tie or an equivalent. Its guidance concerns the official context covered by that publication; the host’s instructions take precedence if they differ.

Time of day can help distinguish morning dress from evening dress, but it does not replace the invitation’s wording. Also identify the garment correctly: an evening tailcoat, a dinner jacket, and a morning coat are different choices.

Build the white-tie outfit around the tailcoat
The white-tie outfit is a coordinated set, not a regular tuxedo with one or two white accessories. The Belgian government guide specifies these components for its formal context:
- Jacket: an open-fronted evening tailcoat with long rear panels reaching the knees and satin lapels.
- Waistcoat and bow tie: both white.
- Shirt: white, long-sleeved, with double cuffs.
- Trousers: black, with satin trim along the legs and no turn-ups.
- Socks and shoes: long black socks and plain black leather shoes, lacquered or not.

The waistcoat does not replace the tailcoat. Nor does a white bow tie worn with an ordinary tuxedo satisfy the distinction between black tie and white tie.

When searching, use terms such as black evening tailcoat or white-tie tailcoat. “Tuxedo with tails” is understandable, but can return or describe garments that blur the difference between a dinner jacket and an evening tailcoat.

If you will wear white tie infrequently, compare ready-to-wear, made-to-measure, and rental options where available.
