You can make a shaped wool mitt by laying loose fibers over a resist, wetting them with soapy water, then rubbing and rolling until they form a dense felt. A dedicated double-oven-glove method uses carded Bergschaf wool and a cut resist. The finished piece should not be assumed safe for handling hot cookware: the cited craft instructions include no controlled heat test or safety rating.
Choose direct wet-felting—not a knitted mitt that is machine-felted
Direct wet-felting starts with loose wool fibers arranged around a resist or form. Water, soap, rubbing and rolling help the fibers interlock. In contrast, a knitted-then-felted mitt is knitted first and shrunk by machine agitation. These routes use different starting materials and steps; the washing-machine directions in a knitting pattern are not part of direct wet-felting.

| Construction route | Starting form and felting action | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Direct wet-felting | Loose carded wool or roving is laid over a resist or form, then rubbed and rolled with water and soap. | Shape comes from the resist and the wool layout; hand fulling affects the final result. |
| Knitted, then machine-felted | A knitted mitt is agitated in a washing machine according to its pattern. | Novita’s pattern gives a pre-felting gauge and advises reshaping after washing; it notes that machines felt wool differently. Its machine-wash instructions are specific to that pattern: Novita’s knitted and felted oven mitt pattern. |
The instructions below focus on direct wet-felting. The International Feltmakers Association’s 2020 Bergschaf oven-glove method by Lamorna Thomas is the most directly relevant detailed source.
Gather wool, a resist and felting tools
- Felting wool: The dedicated oven-glove method uses carded Bergschaf wool. A separate fingered-glove tutorial uses merino roving. Use wool intended for felting, not an unspecified yarn whose fiber and behavior are unknown.
- Resist or form: A cut resist establishes the mitt shape and keeps the layers from joining across the opening while they are worked. The glove tutorial uses hand forms; follow a pattern suited to the shape you want.
- Soapy water: Sally Bea’s wet-felted glove tutorial describes dishwashing liquid or grated olive soap mixed with hot water.
- For handling and rolling: Bubble wrap can support rubbing or rolling. Thomas’s double-glove method also uses a bamboo blind as a rolling tool.
- Optional fiber-management layers: Curtain netting can help hold fibers during early rubbing; cotton scrim or muslin is used optionally in the upper-hand sections of the double-glove design.
- Finishing tools: Keep sharp scissors and a tape measure nearby, as listed in the dedicated method.
For Thomas’s particular double-glove design, the listed wool is approximately 125 g of grey carded Bergschaf and 55 g of contrast Bergschaf. Those are design-specific amounts, not a universal quantity for every hand size or mitt pattern.

Lay out an even wool shell around the resist
- Set the dimensions and shape. Use a pattern or resist that accounts for the intended hand and mitt portions. The resist is the guide for the shape; the loose wool must extend evenly over it.
- Arrange consistent, overlapping layers. Keep the wool coverage continuous rather than leaving gaps. Lay the fibers in orderly layers so the developing felt is not thin in isolated places.
- Reinforce the mitt areas. In Thomas’s double-glove construction, extra Bergschaf layers cover the mitt portions, which are the areas intended to be thicker. Inspect these sections closely for thin spots before wetting and continuing.
- Add optional support layers where the pattern calls for them. Scrim or muslin may be used in the thinner upper-hand sections of the double-glove method; netting can help manage the fibers during early handling. These are aids within those methods, not substitutes for full wool coverage.
Wet, rub and roll until the fibers bond
- Wet the layout with soapy water. Apply it over the wool so the fibers become workable. Begin gently; vigorous rubbing too early can disturb the arrangement.
- Hold the fibers in place while starting. If using curtain netting, cover the wool during early handling, as in the glove tutorial. Rub through or over the covering with controlled movements.
- Increase the rubbing and rolling gradually. Use bubble wrap for hand rubbing or rolling; the double-glove method uses a bamboo blind. Change rolling directions rather than working only along one axis, and keep smoothing wrinkles and uneven areas.
- Check bonding and thickness as you work. Look for fibers that have not joined and for weak or thin patches, especially over the mitt portions. The glove tutorial emphasizes checking that fibers have bonded; the dedicated oven-glove method advises strengthening the seams as the felt develops.
- Remove the resist when the construction allows, then work the seams. Follow the pattern’s sequence for opening and shaping the piece. Thomas’s method works the seams after removing the resists; do not cut or open the felt before the design calls for it.
Thomas estimates about six hours for her particular double-glove project. Treat that as the time for that design, not a promise for every mitt or maker.
Rinse, shape and dry the mitt
- Rinse the felt thoroughly to remove soap.
- Shape the mitt while it is damp, using the resist or pattern dimensions as a guide.
- Press out excess water with a towel rather than twisting the form out of shape.
- Dry flat with the mitt portions open so they can dry through.
Plan for variable sizing and do not assume heat protection
Wet-felted dimensions are not reliably predicted by a single shrinkage percentage in the cited methods. The final size depends on the layout and how the wool is worked. A first-person account of wet-felting an oven mitt describes missing the intended length, while Novita separately warns that washing machines felt wool differently. Neither source supports a fixed shrinkage figure for all projects.

The word “oven glove” in a craft pattern does not establish a tested temperature rating. Thomas describes thicker Bergschaf layers as providing heat resistance, but the article reports no controlled thermal test or certification for the handmade design. Herding Textiles’ 2023 consumer instructions state contact heat up to 250°C for a maximum of 15 seconds for that manufacturer’s specified oven glove or potholder in domestic kitchen use. That figure applies only to the manufacturer’s product and cannot be transferred to a handmade wet-felted mitt.
Do not treat a handmade felted mitt as “oven safe,” assign it a temperature rating, or rely on it for prolonged contact with hot cookware without testing the finished item to a relevant standard. The available craft instructions provide a construction method, not performance evidence.
