Turn a book into a small loom by threading warp through holes in its pages, then weaving yarn or fabric strips across the strands. This guide shows the punched-page method, which uses a ruler and sturdy handheld punch; a folded-page heddle-style version is also outlined below. Both approaches are described in Dick Blick’s Book Loom lesson plan.
Choose a book-loom method
There are two page-based constructions, plus a template-based option. Choose based on the book and the structure you want, rather than assuming they are interchangeable.

Gather materials for the punched-page loom
- A hardcover book with a flat section of pages
- A ruler and a sturdy handheld hole punch
- Cotton warp yarn or another strong, smooth yarn
- A large tapestry needle for weaving
- Scissors
Yarn, hemp, twine and jute are among the fibers identified for book-loom projects in the Dick Blick plan and Creativity Patch tutorial. Pick a material that suits your project and can pass through the needle and punched holes; the sources do not provide comparative performance tests.

Make and warp the punched-page loom
- Choose the page section. Open the hardcover to a flat, supported section where the pages can lie evenly. The page method depends on the book holding its shape beneath the warp.
- Mark matching hole positions. Use a ruler to lay out a row of evenly spaced marks near one edge of the page section, then mark corresponding positions near the opposite edge. Keep the row positions aligned so each warp strand can run across the weaving area.
- Punch the holes. Use a strong handheld punch to make holes through the pages at the marks. The Dick Blick plan specifies matching rows; the exact spacing depends on the size and intended width of the woven piece.
- Thread the warp. Pass cotton warp through the holes in a repeating path between the two rows, creating parallel strands across the page section. Tie or secure the ends so the strands stay in place while you weave.
- Set tension gently. Keep the warp taut enough to provide a working surface, but do not pull so hard that the pages bend. Dick Blick specifically cautions against excessive tension that bends the book.
Weave a first small piece
Cut a short length of yarn or a narrow fabric strip and thread it through the tapestry needle. Weave it over one warp strand and under the next, then reverse the sequence on the next pass. At the ends of each pass, leave a small loop rather than pulling the weft tight against the edges; use the needle to ease the row into place. This basic over-under pattern is a practical starting point, while the cited sources do not prescribe a universal weave pattern or tension setting.
Continue until the piece is the size you want, keeping the edges within the warp width. A small mug rug is a reasonable first project; the Creativity Patch course page specifically lists weaving with fabric strips, cotton and embroidery floss as part of its instruction sequence.

Make the folded-page heddle alternative
For a loom with a raised center guide, fold a set of center pages upright rather than keeping the page section flat. Dick Blick’s plan describes punching matching holes at the sides and through the center guide, then stringing warp through corresponding holes. This creates a different threading arrangement from the flat punched-page loom. It is the option to consider when you want the center pages to guide the warp; the cited source allows either hardback or paperback for this variant.
Fix common setup problems
- Pages bow or curl: Ease the warp tension. The punched-page plan warns that over-tightening can bend the pages.
- Warp strands do not line up: Check that the holes on the two edges correspond and that the strands follow the intended path across the page section.
- The book shifts while weaving: Work on a stable surface and keep the book open to the selected page section; the pages need to support the warp rather than flex under it.
Finish and store the project
When the weaving is complete, secure the loose warp ends before removing the piece so the rows do not unravel. Trim excess yarn only after the ends are secure. Store the book loom flat and avoid crushing or bending the punched pages, which need to remain usable for the next piece.
