Write Happy holidays! as a standalone greeting, or use lowercase happy holidays within a sentence. Don’t add an apostrophe to make a family name plural: sign a card “from the Smiths,” not “from the Smith’s.”
How to capitalize “Happy Holidays”
The Government of Canada’s Language Portal recommends capitalizing the greeting when it stands alone: “Happy holidays!” In a sentence, keep it lowercase: “We hope you have happy holidays!” or “Wishing you happy holidays!” In both forms, holidays remains lowercase. Names of specific holidays are different: the same guide capitalizes proper names such as Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and New Year’s Day. It gives capitalization guidance, not evidence about which greeting recipients prefer.
Should you write “Happy Holidays” or name a holiday?
“Happy holidays” is a general seasonal greeting. Naming a holiday makes the message more specific. Choose based on what you want to say and what you know about the recipient’s observance; the available guidance does not establish that either wording is universally preferred or guarantees that a message will feel inclusive.

Is “Happy holiday’s” correct?
No. An apostrophe does not make holiday plural, so write Happy holidays! The CDC gives “Happy holidays from the Smiths and Salvios!” as a correct family-card signature and “Happy holiday’s from the Lopezes!” as an incorrect one. Read the CDC’s winter holiday card-writing tips.
Signing with a family name
For a family signature, use the plural form without an apostrophe: “from the Smiths.” The CDC advises adding es to names that end in -s, -z, -ch, -sh, or -x, as in “the Lopezes.” If you need to show possession rather than simply name the family, put the apostrophe after the plural s.

Sending the greeting in a card
A holiday greeting card is one direct way to send the phrase in writing. The U.S. Postal Service has used “Happy Holidays” on mailed greeting cards and letters in December. USPS’s 2010 holiday-season release forecast nearly 3 billion cards and letters for that season. That is a historical forecast, not a current annual count; the release’s separate forecast of 15.8 billion cards, letters, and packages covered a broader category.
