To write your name in graffiti, start with a short word or nickname, sketch it lightly, build every letter on the same baseline and cap line, then choose a style and add an outline, fill, shadow or highlight. Practice the design in a sketchbook or blackbook before moving to personal canvases, authorized walls or supervised classes.

Choose a name that works as lettering

A useful graffiti name is short enough to write repeatedly and distinctive enough to remember. GraffSpace notes that “Most writers settle on three to five letters,” but that is practitioner guidance rather than a statistical rule. Test several words or sounds aloud and on paper.

Before settling on one, check local graffiti communities and online examples so you do not adopt a name already associated with a known writer. Compare candidates for:

  • Readability: Can someone identify the letters quickly?
  • Hand flow: Can you connect the strokes without awkward pauses?
  • Scalability: Does the word still work as a small tag and a large drawing?
  • Extension space: Do the letters leave room for arrows, bars, characters or a background?

In graffiti vocabulary, a tag is “a stylised signature or nickname used by graffiti artists,” according to Oak National Academy. A larger, more detailed name painting is generally called a piece.

Build the letters on paper first

  1. Write the plain word. Use a pencil and write each letter large and wide, leaving visible space between letters. Keep the lines light enough to erase, as recommended by The Artist Block.
  2. Set a common framework. Draw an imaginary baseline for the feet of the letters and a cap line for their tops. Construct rectangular forms around the main strokes, keeping widths, heights and gaps consistent.
  3. Make the word readable before decorating it. If two letters merge or one becomes ambiguous, simplify the bars and counters before adding effects.
  4. Choose a lettering style. Decide whether the design is a quick tag, a rounded throw-up, bold block letters or a more complex piece.
  5. Refine the contour. Trace the final outer shape with an outlining pen or marker, then erase the pencil construction.
  6. Add color and depth. Fill the letters with bold colors, then apply a shadow or highlight from one consistent direction.

Oak’s classroom sequence follows the same progression: choose a style, sketch in pencil, fill with bold colors, and add shadows and highlights. The Artist Block likewise recommends outlining the finished drawing and removing the under-sketch.

Choose a style for your name

Style Letter treatment What to prioritize
Tag A fast, usually one-color signature Hand flow, rhythm and immediate recognition
Throw-up or bubble Rounded, compressed forms with a strong outline and fill Speed and clear contrast between outline and interior
Blockbuster or straight letters Bold, squared forms Clean spacing and proof that the word itself reads well
Wildstyle Interlocking bars, arrows and extensions Connections and visual energy without losing every letter
Piece A larger composition with developed color, depth and background Overall balance, layering and the relationship between name and backdrop

GraffSpace and the Blick Art Materials lesson plan describe these forms as different solutions to speed, legibility and detail. Start with block or straight letters if you are still learning the structure; use wildstyle additions only after the underlying word remains recognizable.

Turn a basic name into a finished design

1. Establish consistent stroke weight

Keep the main bars similar in thickness unless a deliberate contrast is part of the style. Matching widths make the name feel like one alphabet rather than unrelated individual letters.

2. Control the spacing

Look at the negative spaces between letters as carefully as the letters themselves. Tighten large gaps and separate crowded joins. A word should read as a connected design, not as five isolated drawings.

3. Ink the outside contour

Use an outlining pen or marker to commit to the final silhouette. Vary the contour only when it supports the form; random bumps and extra spikes usually make small tags harder to read.

4. Fill the interiors

Apply the fill evenly, or use a planned color transition. Strong outline-to-fill contrast helps a throw-up or piece remain legible at a distance.

5. Add one lighting direction

Choose where the light comes from and put every highlight or cast shadow on the same side of each letter. Consistent direction creates depth; mixing directions flattens the design.

Practice in a blackbook and compare variations

A blackbook is a sketchbook for graffiti ideas that may later become wall work, according to Blick Art Materials. Draw the same name repeatedly, changing one variable at a time: width, slant, connection, outline, fill or shadow.

For each version, check whether you can:

  • Read the name at a glance.
  • Write it in one smooth motion without losing the letter order.
  • Reduce it to a small tag without collapsing the counters.
  • Enlarge it without leaving uneven gaps.
  • Reserve enough open space for later extensions or a background.

Keep the strongest version and redraw it until the proportions become familiar. Repetition is what turns a style choice into a consistent hand.

Materials for a first name design

You can begin with ordinary drawing supplies:

  • A4 or A3 sketch paper
  • Pencils and an eraser
  • Colored pencils or felt-tip pens
  • A ruler for checking guides and block forms
  • An alphabet reference sheet
  • An outlining pen or marker

This list combines the materials in Oak National Academy’s lesson and The Artist Block’s walkthrough. Paper practice lets you erase construction lines and test many versions before committing to a surface.

Where to practice safely and legally

Keep exercises on paper, your own canvases, authorized walls or supervised classes. Permission requirements and spray-paint rules vary by location, so do not assume that an unmarked wall is available to paint. Thames & Hudson’s Graffiti School specifically includes guidance on getting work up safely and legally, but the sources here do not establish jurisdiction-specific laws or protective-equipment specifications. Obtain written permission for a wall and follow the site’s ventilation, clothing and cleanup requirements.

A simple progression for your first week

  1. Session 1: List several short names, write each plainly, and select the one with the best flow.
  2. Session 2: Draw the chosen name as straight block letters with a shared baseline, cap line and spacing.
  3. Session 3: Make a rounded throw-up version and a quick tag version.
  4. Session 4: Ink one design, erase the construction, add a fill and apply a single-direction shadow.
  5. Session 5: Produce several small variations in your blackbook and remove extensions that reduce readability.
  6. Session 6: Scale the best design up on paper or an authorized canvas, keeping the same proportions.
