An avatar can be a portrait, a mascot, a pixel character, a 3D game model, or a talking video persona. The best choice depends on where you will use it, how closely it should resemble you, how much control you need, and whether you are comfortable uploading a photo or voice recording.

The original 2011 article behind this idea listed Androidify, Eightbit.Me, ThatsMyFace, Avatarizeyourself, ClayYourself, MPChange, and Avatara. Those services are best treated as a historical snapshot, not a current recommendations list. See the original article at SmashingApps.

Choose the avatar you actually need

A profile image, a VR-ready character, and a talking presenter are different deliverables. Decide the destination before choosing a creator.

Method Best for Typical effort Likeness Animation Cost signal Main drawback
Preset cartoon builder Profile pictures Minutes Moderate No Often free tier Can look generic
Selfie-to-illustration Recognizable portraits Minutes to an hour Moderate to high Usually no Free or subscription Privacy and inaccurate features
Talking animated avatar Short videos and explainers Minutes Persona-focused Yes Free tier or subscription Templated characters and voice concerns
Pixel art Retro profiles and gaming Minutes to several hours Symbolic Optional Free tools available Fine details disappear when small
3D or game avatar Games, VR and virtual worlds Hours or longer Variable Yes, if rigged Free software to paid assets Format and platform incompatibility
Physical collectible Gifts and desk displays Days or weeks Variable No Production, shipping and taxes Proofing, returns and privacy issues
Original illustration or commission Long-term creator or business branding Days to weeks Highest control By arrangement Usually paid Slower and more expensive

Also check the output requirements: square or circular-safe crop, transparent PNG, full body, video, or a platform-specific 3D file. A destination that accepts only images cannot use a game-ready model, and a 3D platform may reject a beautiful portrait.

1. Build a polished cartoon avatar from preset parts

This is the quickest route to a clean profile image without uploading a face photo. Choose a head shape, skin tone, hair, eyes, eyebrows, mouth, clothing and background, then adjust the composition until the face remains readable at thumbnail size.

  1. Start with a canvas of at least 1,000 × 1,000 pixels.
  2. Use a head-and-shoulders framing unless the destination needs a full body.
  3. Add one or two distinctive accessories, such as glasses, facial hair, a piercing or a recognizable hat.
  4. Choose clothing and colors associated with your personality, work or hobbies.
  5. Keep the background simple and high-contrast.
  6. Export a square PNG and test both square and circular crops before publishing.

Preset construction gives predictable results and is relatively private, but heavy reliance on default parts can make several users look alike.

2. Turn a selfie into an illustrated portrait

Use this approach when recognizability matters but you do not want to draw from scratch. A front-facing, evenly lit photo with a neutral expression usually gives an editor more useful information than a tilted, shadowed or crowded image.

  1. Crop the source photo to your face and shoulders.
  2. Avoid sunglasses, harsh shadows, extreme angles and busy backgrounds.
  3. Choose a style such as comic, watercolor, editorial, pixel, clay or 3D.
  4. Generate or apply several versions rather than accepting the first result.
  5. Correct hair texture, skin tone, face shape, glasses and other features manually where possible.
  6. Read the provider’s retention, deletion, public-gallery and commercial-use terms before uploading.

Automated likeness can misread age, skin tone, hair texture, disability-related features or cultural details. Treat the result as a draft, not an authoritative representation of you. Remove the source image if the service provides a deletion control, and keep a local copy of the finished asset.

3. Make a talking animated avatar

A talking avatar is a video character rather than a static profile picture. It works well for short explainers, stream intros, lessons and social posts when you want personality without appearing on camera.

Adobe Express’s avatar tool is a current example. Adobe describes a workflow in which you choose a character, record or upload audio, customize the character, background and framing, preview the result, and export the video. Its page says audio or voiceover can be up to two minutes and includes people, animals, emojis, aliens and other imaginative characters.

  1. Choose a character whose visual mood fits your voice.
  2. Record a conversational script or upload an audio file.
  3. Customize the background, framing and duration.
  4. Preview the lip-sync and gestures.
  5. Trim pauses or unnecessary setup.
  6. Resize for the intended social platform and download the video.

Adobe currently lists a free plan and a US$9.99-per-month Premium plan for individuals in the United States on its pricing page. Prices, promotions and entitlements can change; verify them before subscribing. Premium features listed by Adobe include additional editing tools, premium assets, 100GB of storage, one-click resizing and 250 generative credits per month. Those plan benefits are separate from whether you need an animated avatar.

  • Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)

  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works

Keep scripts short and spoken. A character library can make results feel templated, and a voice recording introduces additional privacy considerations.

4. Go retro with a pixel-art avatar

Pixel art is ideal when a strong silhouette matters more than realistic facial detail. Start at a small native resolution, use a limited palette, and exaggerate features that identify you: a distinctive hairstyle, glasses, jacket, headphones or favorite color.

  • Design at the size you intend to use, not only on a large canvas.
  • Scale finished art with nearest-neighbor interpolation so edges stay crisp.
  • Keep the outline and face readable against the background.
  • Check the image at 32- or 64-pixel display sizes.

Details that look impressive when enlarged may vanish in a messaging app or game profile. A simple silhouette often communicates more than extra pixels.

5. Create a 3D or game-ready character

Choose 3D when you need interchangeable clothing, poses, animation, a virtual-world identity or a game-specific model. Anime-style tools such as VRoid Studio are candidates to investigate, but check the current official documentation for pricing, export formats and compatibility before committing.

Before exporting, find out whether the destination requires a particular file type, rig or skeleton, polygon count, texture size, permissions or desktop workflow. A model that works in one game or virtual world may not transfer elsewhere because of rigging, texture, licensing or platform rules.

  1. Read the destination’s current technical requirements first.
  2. Build or select the smallest model that meets those requirements.
  3. Export a compatible format and preserve the editable source file.
  4. Test privately or in a preview environment.
  5. Keep a backup of textures, rig data and licenses.

6. Turn your likeness into a physical collectible

A physical avatar can be a figurine, printed portrait, mask, ornamental head or other novelty product. The original article described ThatsMyFace in this category and quoted a $10–$129 range in 2011; that is historical and not a current price.

7. Draw or commission an original character

For streamers, businesses and creators building a long-term identity, an original illustration offers the strongest control and clearest differentiation. You can draw it yourself, use a vector editor, or hire an artist.

A useful commission brief specifies:

  • Platforms and intended uses
  • Canvas sizes and export formats
  • Transparent-background versions
  • Required poses and expressions
  • Number of revisions
  • Commercial-use rights
  • Whether the artist may display the work in a portfolio
  • Delivery of layered source files

This route costs more and takes longer, but it can produce a consistent character sheet for profile images, thumbnails, stickers and video overlays. Make sure the agreement distinguishes ownership of the final artwork from rights in fonts, stock assets or third-party references.

Make any avatar feel like you

Do not try to reproduce every facial detail. Choose three to five identity cues and make them clear:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Hair shape or color
  • Glasses, facial hair, piercings or a signature accessory
  • Favorite colors
  • Clothing associated with your work or hobbies
  • A cultural, professional or recreational detail
  • A characteristic pose or expression
  • A recurring symbol or background

Deliberate exaggeration is often more recognizable than a technically accurate but generic portrait. Save a high-resolution master, then create platform-specific copies.

Before you upload your face or voice

Photo and voice uploads can be more sensitive than ordinary design assets. Review the service’s current retention, deletion, training, account-linking and public-sharing policies. Do not assume that “free” means private, that “AI-generated” means commercially unrestricted, or that owning an exported image gives you rights to every template, model, font or character used to make it.

Lower-risk options include preset construction, manual drawing and a locally installed editor. Cloud photo generation, voice recording and social-account sign-in require more trust. If you plan to sell merchandise, advertise a business or use the avatar as a logo, check commercial terms and intellectual-property restrictions first. Avoid presenting a movie character, game character, celebrity, trademarked mascot or recognizable living artist’s signature style as your own commercial identity.

Which method should you choose?

  • Fastest: a preset cartoon builder.
  • Most recognizable: a carefully prepared selfie illustration or custom portrait.
  • Most expressive: a talking animated avatar.
  • Most nostalgic: pixel art.
  • Most immersive: a compatible 3D avatar.
  • Best gift: a proof-approved physical product.
  • Best for a durable brand: a commissioned original character.

Download the finished image, video and source files immediately. Hosted avatar pages and small web services can disappear, as the period tools in the 2011 list demonstrate.
