Human scale figures are people drawn or placed at a known scale to help viewers judge the size of an architectural space and imagine how it may be used. They are visual references—not dimension labels, measurements of a population, or proof that a design meets accessibility requirements.

What a human scale figure tells the viewer

A person in a plan, elevation, section, rendering or physical model gives the viewer a familiar point of reference. The figure can also suggest occupation or intended activity: someone walking through a space, sitting at a table or gathering in a plaza can help communicate how the place is meant to function.

That cue is only one part of scale. The UK government’s National Design Guide describes a building’s scale in relation to its height, width and length and its surroundings; it also explains that scale affects how a space is used and experienced. A person can orient the viewer, but cannot by itself establish whether a building or space feels appropriately proportioned.

How tall should a figure be in a drawing?

Use the scale of the drawing and state or disclose the real-world height you are assuming when precision or representation matters. One professional practice guide, by Sinan Ozen in 2026, uses a standing adult height of 1.75 m as a neutral drawing convention. It is an authored convention, not a universal human dimension or a code requirement.

100PCS Model Trains Architectural 1:50 O Scale Painted Figures O Gauge Sitting and Standing People for Miniature Scenes
  • Size:Approx. 35mm(H) or 1.38''(H),as the picture shows.
  • These model figures look very real.
  • This tiny plastic people is very helpful props for model train Layout and Architectural building, train station layout ,school project model and miniature dollhouse.
  • Scale:1:50,Suitable for O Scale.Material: Plasic.Color:Assorted Colour.
  • Package included: 100pcs painted figures,about 13 different poses.

Calculate the drawn height by dividing the assumed real height by the scale denominator. Convert metres to millimetres first: at 1:100, 1,750 mm ÷ 100 = 17.5 mm. At 1:50, 1,750 mm ÷ 50 = 35 mm.

Drawing scale Figure height on sheet How to read the example
1:20 87.5 mm Calculated from the 1.75 m convention in Ozen’s 2026 guide.
1:50 35 mm Calculated from the 1.75 m convention in Ozen’s 2026 guide.
1:100 17.5 mm Calculated from the 1.75 m convention in Ozen’s 2026 guide.
1:200 8.75 mm Calculated from the 1.75 m convention in Ozen’s 2026 guide.
1:500 3.5 mm Calculated from the 1.75 m convention in Ozen’s 2026 guide; the guide says a person figure is usually too small to read at this scale and suggests vehicles instead.

These are arithmetic conversions of the guide’s assumed height, not measured population averages. The same guide gives an eye level of roughly 1.5–1.6 m and a seated figure about 1.2 m high with a seat roughly 450 mm high; treat these as practice examples, not demographic statistics or building-code requirements.

Choose a figure that suits the drawing

  • Technical drawings: A simple silhouette is often legible at small output sizes and is less likely to compete with linework.
  • Rendered visualizations: Photographic cutouts can add visual realism, but may look inconsistent beside a restrained line drawing.
  • Physical models: Choose a miniature whose stated scale matches the model, then check its dimensions. Figures are sold in different scales; availability and dimensions depend on the individual listing.

For digital cutouts, check the asset’s license and permitted uses. An image being easy to download or labeled free does not, by itself, establish permission for commercial use.

Place figures so they clarify rather than distract

  1. Set the feet on the actual ground plane. Align the figure to the floor, pavement or terrain it occupies; a figure floating above or sinking below that plane makes the drawing harder to read.
  2. Use figures where they answer a question. Place them near a doorway, circulation route, seating area or other feature whose size or use needs context.
  3. Keep important information visible. Avoid covering dimensions, entrances, structural details or other parts of the design the viewer needs to inspect.
  4. Keep the graphic treatment consistent. Use a coherent style and level of detail for the figures and other entourage in the same drawing.

What a scale figure cannot establish

A single drawn person should not be treated as a stand-in for everyone who may use a space. Anthropometric measurements vary with posture and measurement method; NIST identifies landmarks, posture, instruments and the measurer as sources of measurement variation. NIST describes anthropometry as the measurement of the human body to compare and characterize body size and shape in different postures.

For design decisions that depend on body dimensions, use appropriate population data and dimensional criteria rather than relying on a generic silhouette. ISO 7250-1:2017 defines measurement procedures and landmarks for technological design; ISO reports that the standard was reviewed and confirmed in 2023 and remains current. Neither the standard nor a scale figure alone establishes that a particular design satisfies accessibility rules. Applicable requirements depend on the jurisdiction and project.

A practical check before publishing or presenting

  • Is the drawing or model scale clear?
  • Does the figure’s size follow that scale and the real-world height convention you intend?
  • Are the figure’s feet on the correct ground plane?
  • Does its pose or activity help explain the space without obscuring the design?
  • Is the figure’s style appropriate for the drawing or visualization?
  • If it is a digital asset, do its license terms permit your intended use?
  • If the design depends on human dimensions or accessibility, have you checked the relevant data and requirements separately?
