Germany’s federal flag has three equal horizontal bands: black on top, red in the middle and gold on the bottom. Its official proportions are a height-to-length ratio of 3:5. Germany also authorizes a vertical-striped banner, while the federal service flag adds a shield to the tricolor.
What is the correct order of the German flag colors?
The ordinary German federal flag is black, red and gold, arranged in three equal horizontal bands from top to bottom. Article 22(2) of Germany’s Basic Law states: “The federal flag shall be black, red and gold.” Read Article 22 of the Basic Law.

The official height-to-length ratio is 3:5. This is the design specification set out in Germany’s flag order, not a requirement that every flag sold or displayed must have a particular physical size. For example, a flag 90 cm high would be 150 cm long if made to that ratio. The flag order was issued on 13 November 1996; the official page notes an amendment dated 22 November 2005. See the German flag order.
Can the German flag have vertical stripes?
Yes. The federal flag may also be displayed as a banner with vertical bands. In that form, the order is black at the left, red in the center and gold at the right. The horizontal flag and vertical banner use the same colors and sequence, adapted to their orientation.
What is the difference between the federal flag and the federal service flag?
The ordinary federal flag is the plain black-red-gold tricolor. The federal service flag is a distinct design that adds the federal shield. The two should not be treated as interchangeable versions of the same plain flag; the shield-bearing design is the service flag identified separately in the federal flag order.
