The Indian Flag Chakra is the navy-blue wheel in the centre of the flag’s white band. Commonly called the Ashoka Chakra, it has 24 equally spaced spokes and is based on the wheel shown on the abacus of Ashoka’s Lion Capital at Sarnath.
What does the Indian Flag Chakra look like?
The Flag Code of India specifies three equal horizontal panels: India saffron (Kesari) at the top, white in the middle and India green at the bottom. The navy-blue Chakra is centred in the white panel, completely visible on both sides of the flag, and has 24 equally spaced spokes. The flag’s length-to-height ratio is 3:2.

The Ministry of Home Affairs’ Flag Code states: “The middle panel shall be white, bearing at its centre the design of Ashoka Chakra in navy blue colour with 24 equally spaced spokes.” The National Portal of India describes the Chakra’s diameter as approximately the width of the white band; that is a descriptive proportion, not a precise construction measurement.

Why does the Ashoka Chakra have 24 spokes?
The official design establishes that the wheel has 24 spokes and that they are equally spaced. The Flag Code describes the device’s appearance but does not assign a separate official virtue or meaning to each spoke. Explanations that connect individual spokes to particular virtues should therefore be understood as interpretations, not as a meaning specified in the Flag Code.
Where did the Chakra design come from?
The National Portal of India identifies the design with the wheel on the abacus of the Lion Capital of Ashoka at Sarnath. The present national flag was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 22 July 1947, shortly before India’s independence. The portal’s account is available on its Indian Tricolor page.

What should you know when displaying the flag?
The Press Information Bureau’s FAQ says members of the public may display the national flag at home, provided it is treated with dignity and honour. It also summarizes restrictions including displaying the flag upside down or in a damaged or dishevelled condition, using it as decoration, or allowing it to touch the ground.
The FAQ distinguishes display situations: following a 2022 amendment, the flag may be flown day and night when displayed in the open or on a member of the public’s house. Public-building display follows separate sunrise-to-sunset guidance. Consult the Press Information Bureau FAQ about the Indian National Flag for the applicable details.
