Muharram is the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar, and Ashura is its tenth day. For many Sunni Muslims, Ashura is associated with voluntary fasting and a hadith account of Moses and the Israelites; for many Shi’a Muslims, it is the focal day of mourning for Husayn ibn Ali, who was killed at Karbala in 680 CE. Practices differ among communities, and the observances are not mutually exclusive.
What is Muharram?
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar. It is considered sacred in Islam. Its name is often rendered as “the sacred” or “forbidden” month, reflecting its religious status.

Ashura falls on the tenth day of Muharram. The month and the day are related but not interchangeable: Muharram lasts a month, while Ashura names one particular day within it. The meaning attached to Ashura, and how it is marked, varies across Muslim communities.
When is Ashura?
Ashura is the tenth of Muharram, but its Gregorian date changes each year because the Islamic calendar is lunar. The date observed locally may also differ according to moon-sighting and calendar conventions. To find the date for a particular year, check a current calendar or announcement used by the Muslim community in your location rather than relying on a date from another country or year. The Open University’s Ashura overview also identifies it as the tenth day of Muharram.

Why do many Sunni Muslims fast on Ashura?
In Sunni hadith traditions, Ashura is associated with God delivering Moses and the Israelites from Pharaoh. Reports collected in Sunnah.com’s selection of hadith on Muharram and Ashura describe fasting on the day and relate it to that deliverance. This is a religious tradition reported in hadith, not a historical conclusion established by the sources cited here.

These reports describe fasting in Muharram as voluntary after fasting in Ramadan became obligatory. Sahih Muslim 1134a records the Prophet expressing the intention, “When the next year comes, God willing, we would observe fast on the 9th.” The report is commonly cited in connection with adding the ninth of Muharram to the fast; it should be understood in its hadith context.

Fasting is a prominent Sunni observance, not a requirement that defines every Muslim’s practice. For discussion of early historical origins and their interpretation, Encyclopaedia Iranica’s entry on Ashura notes scholarly disagreement about the precise calendrical relationship between the early fast and Jewish observance.
Why do many Shi’a Muslims mourn during Muharram?
For many Shi’a communities, Muharram is a period of mourning for Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. Husayn was killed at Karbala in 680 CE, and Ashura is the central day of remembrance. The story and its themes of sacrifice, injustice, and fidelity are recalled through religious and communal observances.

There is no single ritual shared by every Shi’a community. Forms of remembrance described by Oxford Bibliographies in Islamic Studies and contemporary reporting include assemblies, recitation, elegies, processions, and lamentation. Some communities also distribute food or organize blood drives. The particular customs and their interpretation vary by place and community; no one practice represents all Shi’a Muslims.
How do Sunni and Shi’a observances differ—and overlap?
| Aspect | Common emphasis in many Sunni traditions | Common emphasis in many Shi’a communities |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning associated with Ashura | Hadith accounts connect the day with Moses and the Israelites’ deliverance. | Remembrance of Husayn ibn Ali’s death at Karbala is central. |
| Practice described in the sources | Voluntary fasting, with hadith reports mentioning Ashura and an intention to fast on the ninth day. | Mourning and remembrance through forms such as assemblies, recitation, elegies, and, in some places, processions or charitable activities. |
| Variation | Fasting is prominent, but individual observance differs. | Commemorative customs differ among communities and locations. |
This comparison describes prominent emphases, not rigid boundaries. Some Sunni Muslims also take part in mourning rituals for Husayn, and practices cannot be inferred for every individual from their tradition alone. Associated Press reporting dated June 25, 2026 describes contemporary gatherings and local variation in how Muharram and Ashura are marked.
