“Indonesian heroes” can mean many people remembered for courage or service. The official distinction is Pahlawan Nasional (National Hero), a state honor recognizing extraordinary contributions to Indonesia’s independence, unity, and national life. The latest cohort confirmed in the government announcements cited here is ten people honored on 10 November 2025.
What does Pahlawan Nasional mean?
Pahlawan Nasional is an Indonesian state honor, not a complete list of everyone Indonesians may call a hero. The State Secretariat says the award recognizes extraordinary service in achieving, winning, defending, and filling independence, as well as realizing Indonesia’s unity and cohesion. Its stated rationale is broader than military service: recipients have been recognized for contributions in education, politics, law, diplomacy, social and humanitarian work, and armed struggle. Read the State Secretariat’s 2025 announcement.
The honor documents an official decision and the government’s stated account of a recipient’s contribution. It does not, by itself, settle every historical interpretation of that person’s record.
Who received Indonesia’s National Hero title in 2025?
On 10 November 2025, President Prabowo Subianto conferred the title on ten people at the State Palace in Jakarta. The awards were made under Presidential Decree No. 116/TK/2025, dated 6 November 2025. The government announcement associates each recipient with the following fields or contributions:
#1 Best Overall
| Recipient | Contribution described in the announcement |
|---|---|
| K.H. Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) | Political struggle, Islamic education, humanity, democracy, and pluralism |
| Jenderal Besar TNI H. M. Soeharto | National development; identified as Indonesia’s second president |
| Marsinah | Social and humanitarian struggle and human rights |
| Prof. Dr. Mochtar Kusumaatmadja | Law and politics |

| Jenderal TNI (Purn) Sarwo Edhie Wibowo | Armed struggle and the 1945–1949 independence war |
| Sultan Muhammad Salahuddin | Education and diplomacy |
| Syaikhona Muhammad Kholil | Islamic education |
| Tuan Rondahaim Saragih | Armed struggle against Dutch colonialism |
| Zainal Abidin Syah | Politics, diplomacy, and the sovereignty of Papua as part of Indonesia |

How were the 2025 recipients selected?
The Cabinet Secretariat described a staged process for the 2025 awards. Nominations began in communities at district and city levels, were reviewed by regional teams that included academics, religious leaders, community figures, and governors, and then went to a central research and title-review team coordinated by the Ministry of Social Affairs.

Government announcements are useful primary sources for confirming who received the title, when it was conferred, the decree cited, and how officials described the contributions. They are not a substitute for biographies, archival evidence, or independent historical analysis. When comparing figures, consider their period and region, the type of contribution attributed to them, and what evidence supports a fuller account of their lives. The announcements cited here establish neither a complete legal history of the honor nor whether a 2026 cohort had been announced.
