The winter solstice is an astronomical moment: the point in the year when one hemisphere is tilted farthest away from the Sun. In the Northern Hemisphere, it occurs in December and brings the year’s shortest daylight period; in the Southern Hemisphere, the June solstice is winter’s shortest day. The exact date and time vary slightly from year to year.
What happens at the winter solstice?
Earth’s rotation axis is tilted about 23.4° from the direction perpendicular to its orbital plane. As Earth travels around the Sun, the axis remains nearly fixed in direction. At the December solstice, the Northern Hemisphere tilts away from the Sun and receives less direct sunlight, while the Southern Hemisphere tilts toward it. The June solstice reverses that arrangement. This axial tilt—not Earth being farther from the Sun—causes the seasonal contrast. Earth actually reaches perihelion, its closest point to the Sun, in early January, about two weeks after the December solstice, according to the U.S. Naval Observatory and its season-duration explanation.
When is the winter solstice?
The answer depends on the hemisphere: “winter solstice” usually refers to the December solstice in the Northern Hemisphere and the June solstice in the Southern Hemisphere. The solstice is a precise astronomical moment, not a whole day, and its calendar date and clock time shift slightly from year to year. The U.S. Naval Observatory’s seasonal data service provides year-specific dates and times for 1700 through 2100. To find the exact moment for a particular year, select that year in the service; the local calendar date can differ from the UTC date when time zones cross midnight.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the December solstice has the least daylight and longest night of the year. After the solstice, daylight duration begins increasing toward the June solstice. The Southern Hemisphere has the opposite season and its longest day at the December solstice. The number of daylight hours depends on latitude: locations near the polar regions can experience polar night or continuous daylight, so there is no single daylight total that applies everywhere. The U.S. Naval Observatory’s sunrise and sunset definitions explain the latitude-dependent geometry.

Does the solstice mark the first day of winter?
It marks the start of astronomical winter, but meteorologists use a different convention. In the Northern Hemisphere, meteorological winter begins December 1 and comprises December, January and February. The two definitions serve different purposes rather than contradicting one another.
| Convention | Basis | Northern Hemisphere start | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Astronomical winter | Earth–Sun geometry | Winter solstice; exact date varies by year | Marks the astronomical season |
| Meteorological winter | Calendar months and the annual temperature cycle | December 1 | Groups months consistently for weather and climate statistics |
In the Southern Hemisphere, seasons and meteorological month groupings reverse: astronomical winter begins at the June solstice, and meteorological winter comprises June, July and August. NOAA explains the distinction and notes that its sample dates are illustrative because exact astronomical dates vary by year in its meteorological-versus-astronomical winter overview.

Why aren’t earliest sunset and latest sunrise on the solstice?
The solstice is the day with the least total daylight, but it is generally not the date of either the earliest sunset or the latest sunrise. The reason is that apparent solar time—the Sun’s position in the sky—does not align perfectly with uniform clock time throughout the year. At about 40° north latitude, the U.S. Naval Observatory gives approximate dates of December 8 for earliest sunset and January 5 for latest sunrise; the dates shift with latitude. For a local answer, check a sunrise-and-sunset calendar for the specific location rather than treating those examples as universal. See the USNO explanation of sunrise, sunset and solar time.

How have people observed the solstice?
Ancient cultures tracked the Sun’s changing path, the length of daylight and the locations of sunrise and sunset. NASA identifies Stonehenge in England and the Torreon at Machu Picchu in Peru as monuments built to follow the Sun’s annual progress and help predict its movements. These examples show solar observation and alignment; they do not establish that all cultures celebrated the solstice or that later holidays share a single origin. See NASA’s solstice overview.
