Indonesian National Awakening Day, or Hari Kebangkitan Nasional (Harkitnas), is observed each year on May 20. The date commemorates the founding of Budi Utomo in 1908, an early milestone in Indonesia’s national movement—not the work of a single organization that created nationalism or independence by itself.

Why is Indonesian National Awakening Day celebrated on May 20?

May 20 marks the founding of Budi Utomo in Jakarta on May 20, 1908. The Central Statistics Agency of Gunungkidul describes the organization’s founding as an early milestone in the national movement. The anniversary date and the annual observance are related, but they are not the same event: Budi Utomo was founded in 1908, while May 20 was designated as the commemoration date in 1948.

According to the BPS Kabupaten Gunungkidul account, President Soekarno designated May 20 as Hari Kebangkitan Nasional in 1948 at the Presidential Palace in Yogyakarta, following a proposal by Ki Hadjar Dewantara. The account presents the choice as a symbol of awakening and unity during the National Revolution.

What was Budi Utomo?

Budi Utomo was founded by Dr. Sutomo and students of STOVIA, the medical school for indigenous students in the Dutch East Indies. Indonesia’s Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education connects the organization’s ideas to the physician and educator Wahidin Sudirohusodo and glosses the name Budi Utomo as “noble character.” Its founding on May 20, 1908, is also noted in the ministry’s educational account.

How did Budi Utomo fit into the wider national movement?

Budi Utomo matters as an early example of modern organization, not as a stand-in for the whole movement. The State Secretariat’s 2008 centenary speech describes its emergence as a new form of organization that inspired later groups. The speech points to the Youth Pledge of 1928 as a later milestone and culmination in the movement’s development. The 1908 founding and the 1928 pledge therefore mark distinct stages, separated by two decades of organizing and change.

That distinction matters: Indonesia’s national movement developed through the contributions of many people and organizations. The government sources cited here frame Budi Utomo as an important beginning or milestone, not as the sole cause of Indonesian nationalism or independence. The broader historical debates about the movement’s membership and political limits are not settled by these commemorative accounts.

What does the observance mean today?

Harkitnas is also a civic occasion to reflect on awareness, unity, and collective agency. In remarks for the May 20, 2025 observance, Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid described the date as a return to an important page in the republic’s history, written through awakening, awareness, unity, and the courage to reject continued colonization. This is an English rendering of her Indonesian statement in the ministry’s 2025 press release.

The Ministry of Communication and Digital’s 2025 framing emphasized reflection on history, awareness, unity, and self-reliance. Themes and programs can vary from year to year, so a particular year’s slogan should not be mistaken for the permanent meaning of the observance.
