May 1 is observed as a workers’ holiday in many countries, often called International Workers’ Day, May Day, or Labor Day. Its name, legal status, and local history vary by country. It is not the date of U.S. federal Labor Day, which falls in September. If you are checking whether May 1 is a public holiday where you live, consult that country’s current calendar.
What does May 1 Labor Day mean?
May 1 is internationally associated with workers and labor movements. The date commemorates labor organizing and workers’ rights, but it does not have one uniform name or meaning around the world. For example, South Africa calls it Workers’ Day, while Egypt’s Cairo Governorate describes a Labor Day observance.
Whether May 1 is a statutory or public holiday depends on the country. South African government sources identify it as a public holiday, and Cairo Governorate says it is an official public holiday in Egypt. Those examples do not establish holiday status in every country.

The modern commemoration is rooted in late nineteenth-century labor history. Official accounts connect it with labor events in Chicago in 1886, but the date’s history should not be reduced to a single, uncontested origin story. The U.S. Department of Labor’s account of the separate U.S. Labor Day tradition notes that historical attribution is disputed.

Argentina’s government says the International Socialist established May 1 as “Día de los Trabajadores” in Paris in 1889. It records the first Buenos Aires May 1 workers’ event on May 1, 1890, with an estimated attendance of 1,500 to 1,800. That figure refers to the Buenos Aires gathering, not worldwide participation.

Is May 1 Labor Day in the United States?
No: May 1 is not the date of U.S. federal Labor Day. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management lists federal Labor Day in 2027 as Monday, September 6. Argentina’s government likewise distinguishes the U.S. September holiday from the May 1 workers’ commemoration.
Mexico’s labor ministry search-result description identifies May 1 as “Día del Trabajo” and links the international commemoration to the 1886 Chicago workers’ demonstration and its repression. Because the ministry page could not be accessed, that description should not be treated as a fuller account of the country’s holiday history.

“May Day” can refer to the May 1 workers’ commemoration, while “Labor Day” is a name used for workers’ holidays whose date varies by country. In the United States, federal Labor Day is in September; in countries observing a workers’ holiday on May 1, the local name and history may differ. The date alone does not tell you whether the day is a public holiday in a particular jurisdiction.
