Instagram added native support for 3:4 photos on May 28, 2025. For regular single-photo posts and carousels, artists can now upload many phone-camera images of paintings in their original portrait framing instead of forcing them into Instagram’s shorter 4:5 crop.
That does not make every Instagram placement 3:4. Stories, Reels, ads, profile previews, mixed-orientation carousels, and some third-party publishing tools can still use different dimensions or crop rules.

Instagram was once closely associated with square images, but it had already expanded beyond square posts by supporting taller portrait images, particularly the familiar 4:5 format. The May 2025 update added native support for 3:4 still photos, a portrait ratio common in smartphone camera captures.
3:4 means three units wide by four units tall. It is not the same as 4:3: 3:4 is portrait, while 4:3 is landscape. A phone may describe its sensor or camera setting as 4:3, but a vertically oriented export from that image is expressed as 3:4.

Instagram described the change as allowing images to appear “exactly as you shot it.” In practical terms, a supported 3:4 feed image can retain its original composition instead of being automatically shortened to 4:5. Instagram can still resize and compress the file, however, so “no forced crop” does not mean “no processing.” Instagram’s announcement was reported by Social Media Today.
The best 3:4 size for an Instagram photo
For the largest practical 3:4 feed export, use:
1,080 × 1,440 pixels
Instagram’s help documentation says feed photos are retained at their original proportions when they fall between 1.91:1 and 3:4, with a maximum upload width of 1,080 pixels. A larger phone file can be uploaded and resized, but exporting to 1,080 pixels wide gives you a predictable working file. Instagram may enlarge images below 320 pixels wide and reduce images above 1,080 pixels wide. See the official image-resolution guidance.

Useful Instagram export sizes
| Use case | Practical export | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| 3:4 feed photo | 1,080 × 1,440 px | Preserving a native portrait phone image |
| 4:5 feed photo | 1,080 × 1,350 px | Existing templates, compatible workflows, or deliberate cropping |
| Wide feed photo | 1,080 × 566 px or taller | Landscape images within Instagram’s supported range |
| Story or Reel | Usually 1,080 × 1,920 px | Vertical 9:16 video and full-screen content |
The 1,080 × 1,920 recommendation is a practical production convention for Stories and Reels, not a universal rule for every Instagram surface. Instagram’s Reel guidance supports ratios from 1.91:1 through 9:16, with a minimum resolution of 720 pixels and a minimum frame rate of 30 frames per second. Check Instagram’s current Reel specifications.
How to upload a 3:4 photo without cropping
- Update Instagram through your device’s app store.
- Open Instagram and tap the Create or plus button.
- Choose Post, not Story or Reel.
- Select the 3:4 painting photo from your camera roll.
- If the preview initially shows a square crop, tap the expand or full-frame control.
- Check that the complete portrait frame is visible, including the edges of the artwork.
- For a carousel, select the desired orientation before finishing the edits and inspect every slide.
- Add your caption, tags, location, and other details, then publish.
The normal result should be a full 3:4 composition in the feed rather than an automatic 4:5 crop. The app interface can vary by device, account, and app release, so the important check is the preview: confirm that the entire painting is visible before posting.
Single posts and carousels are not identical
Instagram’s 3:4 announcement covers both single-image posts and carousels. However, a carousel has one selected orientation for the whole post. Instagram’s documentation also says a carousel can contain up to 10 photos or videos and that its orientation affects all the media in that carousel. You cannot assign a different orientation to each slide. See Instagram’s carousel guidance.

This matters when documenting a painting series. If one slide is 3:4, another is 4:5, and a third is square, Instagram may fit or crop some images to the orientation chosen for the post. For the most consistent result, prepare the entire carousel at one ratio. If preserving each original frame is more important than keeping one uniform post, publish the images separately.
Should you use 3:4 or 4:5?
Neither ratio is universally “the correct Instagram size.” Choose according to the artwork and the rest of your publishing workflow.
| Choose 3:4 when… | Choose 4:5 when… |
|---|---|
| You want to preserve a phone camera’s native portrait framing. | Your existing brand templates are 1,080 × 1,350 pixels. |
| The top and bottom of the painting or studio scene contain important detail. | The same asset must work reliably in a scheduler or across several platforms. |
| You are posting one image or a consistently prepared 3:4 carousel. | Your advertising, design, or content workflow already uses 4:5 safe areas. |
| You want the tallest supported regular-photo presentation without artificial borders. | You deliberately prefer a shorter portrait composition or need broad workflow compatibility. |
Use 1:1 when a square composition is intentional, and prepare a separate 9:16 version for Stories and Reels. A 3:4 feed export should not be treated as a universal Instagram master.

What Instagram still crops or displays differently?
Stories and Reels
Stories and Reels are designed around vertical, full-screen presentation, usually 9:16. A 3:4 painting image may appear with empty space, be enlarged, or be cropped when placed there. Create a dedicated 9:16 canvas and keep signatures, prices, titles, and other essential information away from the extreme edges.

Advertisements
Ads can have placement-specific requirements. A file that looks correct as an organic feed post is not automatically safe for every advertising placement.
Profile previews
Feed display and profile previews are separate questions. The 3:4 announcement concerns photo posts; it does not establish that every profile grid, archive, embedded post, advertisement, or external preview will show the complete image without modification.

- Rotatable twist with 1/4"screw allows 360° adjustment and 180° flipping, so you can take photos, video call or live broadcast with ease
- Universal compatibility with smartphones up to 3.7 inches wide, GoPros, digital cameras and webcams
- Includes a wireless remote with a range of 30 feet (without obstacle), so you can easily take individual, group and wide-angle shots
- Swaps easily between handheld selfie stick and stand-alone tripod for dual-purpose use
- Whether you're an amateur, enthusiast or professional, this is a must-have accesory for shooting on the go
Instagram’s carousel documentation says the profile shows the first photo or video from a carousel. Because profile layouts and preview behavior can change by account and app version, keep faces, logos, prices, and important text away from the outer edges unless you have checked the live preview on your own account.
Third-party schedulers
Scheduling platforms may impose their own validation, resizing, or cropping rules. Do not assume that a scheduler supports 3:4 exactly as the Instagram app does. If a scheduled preview looks wrong, upload the same file directly through Instagram to determine whether the intermediary workflow is responsible.

If Instagram still crops your 3:4 image
Work through these checks in order:
- Verify the actual dimensions. Confirm that the file is portrait 3:4, such as 3,024 × 4,032 or 1,080 × 1,440. Do not rely only on the camera app’s “4:3” label.
- Use the full-frame control. Instagram may initially open the image in a square-style preview.
- Update the app. Instagram recommends using the most recent version when seeking the best available image resolution.
- Re-export at 1,080 × 1,440 pixels. This removes ambiguity about oversized files, unusual metadata, or custom dimensions.
- Remove added borders or canvas padding. An editing app may have changed the overall canvas ratio even if the painting itself remains 3:4.
- Test a single post. If the image works alone but not in a carousel, the carousel’s shared orientation is the likely issue.
- Check the destination. Make sure you are creating a regular Post rather than a Story, Reel, ad, or other format.
- Test direct upload. Compare the Instagram app with your desktop or scheduling workflow.
- Fall back to 4:5 if necessary. Export a 1,080 × 1,350 version with carefully placed margins. 4:5 remains within Instagram’s supported feed range.
If the source ratio is outside Instagram’s documented 1.91:1-to-3:4 range, cropping is expected rather than a software fault.
Best practices for photographing and posting paintings
- Keep a high-resolution master. Export smaller Instagram versions from the original rather than repeatedly resizing the same compressed file.
- Prepare separate placements. Keep a 3:4 feed version, a 4:5 compatibility version, and a 9:16 Story/Reel version when the post will be reused.
- Protect the edges. Leave breathing room around signatures, frames, labels, prices, and text because previews and placements can crop differently.
- Do not upscale unnecessarily. Instagram’s 1,080-pixel maximum retained width does not make a low-resolution photo sharper.
- Review the live result. Check both the feed post and your profile preview, especially when the composition includes text or a tightly cropped artwork.
- Keep carousels consistent. Crop or pad every slide to the same ratio before uploading.
Do you need an editing tool?
No. For an occasional post, Instagram and your phone’s built-in editor are enough. Paid software does not unlock 3:4 support; that capability comes from Instagram.
Tools become useful when your workflow is more demanding:
- Canva is suited to simple resizing, templates, borders, and separate feed, Story, and Reel layouts.
- Adobe Lightroom is a stronger fit for photographers managing RAW files, presets, libraries, and batch exports.
- Adobe Photoshop is appropriate for precise canvas work, compositing, typography, and custom safe areas, but is unnecessary for a straightforward upload.
- Meta Business Suite can help businesses manage publishing, but its composer should still be previewed rather than assumed to handle every 3:4 workflow identically.
