Cobalt blue remains a colour to watch in some 2026 fashion coverage, but it is not Pantone’s official Color of the Year. Pantone’s 2026 selection is PANTONE 11-4201 Cloud Dancer. For painters, the distinction matters: cobalt blue is also the name of a specific artists’ pigment, not just a vivid blue appearance.

Pantone named PANTONE 11-4201 Cloud Dancer its 2026 Color of the Year. The designation is therefore not cobalt blue. Pantone describes Cloud Dancer as “a key structural color whose versatility provides scaffolding for the color spectrum, allowing all colors to shine.”
That official annual designation is different from a seasonal colour trend. Fashion editors may highlight shades they expect to see or want to wear, but those observations do not change Pantone’s selection.

Is cobalt blue still a 2026 trend?
Some fashion coverage includes cobalt among the prominent or appealing colours for 2026. Expaio’s Australian winter 2026 coverage discusses cobalt alongside cerulean and aqua, and also names Cloud Dancer as Pantone’s Color of the Year. Who What Wear’s 2026 coverage likewise mentions cobalt in a fashion context.
These are editorial trend observations, not an official designation or proof that cobalt is widespread across every market or industry. The accurate short version is: cobalt blue has a place in some 2026 fashion reporting, while Cloud Dancer is Pantone’s official 2026 Color of the Year.

What does “cobalt blue” mean to a painter?
In artists’ materials, cobalt blue can refer to cobalt aluminate, pigment PB28. A historical pigment reference also calls it Thénard’s blue and describes its manufacture and use. The chemistry reference and the historical pigment book concern the material, rather than fashion forecasting.
A paint colour that looks cobalt blue does not necessarily contain cobalt pigment. Similar-looking hues can be made with other pigments, so check the product’s pigment information if the material identity matters. The phrase “cobalt blue watercolor paint” is a useful starting point when shopping, but verify the label rather than assuming a particular listing contains PB28.
