Usually, yes—if your walls regularly collect fingerprints, food splashes, muddy marks or pet scuffs. Dulux Easycare Washable & Tough is designed for high-traffic rooms and uses a stain-repellent surface intended to keep many water-based spills on top long enough to wipe away. The extra cost is easiest to justify when frequent cleaning or repainting would otherwise become a recurring job.

What is Dulux washable paint?
In the UK, the product most people mean is Dulux Easycare Washable & Tough Matt Emulsion. Do not assume that an Easycare or EasyClean product bought abroad has the same formulation as the UK paint. Read the local label, identify the finish, and follow that market’s preparation, recoat and cleaning directions.
Is Dulux Easycare worth the extra cost?
For a busy family hallway, kitchen, playroom or children’s bedroom, the washable formulation can be worth paying more for because it is intended to tolerate recurring wipe-downs. The value comes from avoiding repeated touch-up painting and from making ordinary spills easier to deal with while the wall is still in good condition.
A standard emulsion can be a sensible choice in a guest room, rarely used study or other space that receives little contact. That is a practical decision rather than a price-tested verdict: current local prices were not verified, and the break-even point depends on your paint price, wall size, colour and how often the surface needs cleaning.

- Choose a washable product when walls are cleaned regularly, children create recurring marks, pets brush against the paint, or repainting a busy route would be disruptive.
- Consider standard emulsion when the room is lightly used and marks are unusual rather than routine.
- Compare the cost per usable litre, expected number of coats, colour availability and the cleaning method allowed on the label—not just the price of one tin.
How does the stain-repellent surface work?
Dulux says the Easycare system repels common water-based spills so they bead on the surface rather than soaking in immediately. That gives you time to remove a spill with a soft, non-abrasive damp cloth. It does not make the wall self-cleaning, and it does not guarantee that every stain will disappear without a trace.
The UK product page describes Easycare as “twenty times tougher than standard Dulux paint.” This is a manufacturer claim, not an independent industry ranking or a promise that the paint will withstand any cleaning chemical, abrasive pad or number of scrubs.
What do the published durability tests actually show?
Which? reported testing 12 durable paints in January 2026. Its method included scrubbing crayon, coloured pencil, melted chocolate and permanent marker, then checking the appearance and coverage after one, two and three coats. Dulux Easycare Washable & Tough Matt Emulsion was among the products tested, with January 2026 listed as its most recent test date.

Which? does not publicly show the Dulux score or confirm a Best Buy designation on the information available here. It would therefore be inaccurate to say that Easycare ranked first, passed every stain test or outperformed all competing paints. Which? product testing team leader Matthew Knight said the best washable paints survived cleaning tests without peeling or flaking; that observation describes the category’s goal, not a published score for this specific Dulux product.
What that evidence means for a family home
- The product has been included in a recent independent durability-testing programme.
- The public information does not establish how it ranked against the other 11 paints.
- Permanent marker, chocolate and coloured-pencil results cannot be inferred from the marketing claim or from the paint’s name.
What finish and coverage should you expect?
The 2025 Dulux EasyCare technical sheet describes an ultra-matt, stain-repellent paint and claims Class 1 scrub resistance. Ultra-matt surfaces are useful when you want to minimise reflected light and disguise small wall irregularities, but they still need gentle cleaning to avoid creating a polished patch.
Dulux’s UK FAQ gives typical coverage of 13 m² per litre. A Malaysian EasyClean technical sheet gives a theoretical coverage of 11–12 m² per litre. These figures come from different regional products and measurement conventions, so they should not be combined into one universal rate. Actual coverage changes with porosity, texture, colour, application method and the number of coats.

Can you wipe crayon, food and muddy fingerprints off it?
The paint is intended to make routine marks easier to remove, especially water-based spills and everyday dirt. Dulux recommends a soft, non-abrasive damp cloth and a non-bleach cleaner in its UK FAQ. Start with the least aggressive method; stronger pressure or rough materials can change the sheen even when the stain comes off.

- Remove loose grit or dried soil without grinding it into the film.
- Dampen a soft, clean cloth and wipe gently over the mark.
- If water alone is insufficient, use a non-bleach cleaner permitted by the local product instructions.
- Rinse residue with a clean damp section of the cloth and dry the area.
- Stop if the surface begins to look shinier, softer or visibly different from the surrounding paint.
Food, mud and fingerprints vary widely in composition. A washable label is not evidence that permanent marker, oily residue or an old stain will vanish completely. Test any cleaner in an inconspicuous area first, particularly on dark colours or recently painted walls.
How long should you wait before washing a newly painted wall?
The Malaysian EasyClean technical sheet specifies that mild-detergent washing should wait until the film has cured for at least seven days. The UK FAQ recommends gentle cleaning but does not provide that same seven-day figure. For a UK tin, use the cure period printed on the label or technical sheet rather than transferring the Malaysian instruction automatically.

During the early cure period, limit contact to what is necessary and avoid testing the wall with repeated scrubbing. Paint can feel dry while the film is still developing its final resistance.
How should you prepare and apply Dulux washable paint?
Durability begins with the surface underneath. The technical guidance calls for sound, clean and dry surfaces, followed by the preparation and recoat process stated on the tin. Washing a dirty wall without removing grease, repairing loose material or allowing moisture to dry can compromise adhesion regardless of the paint’s scrub rating.
- Identify the exact product. Confirm whether the tin is UK Easycare Washable & Tough, a regional EasyClean product or another Dulux finish.
- Inspect the wall. Remove flaking material, repair defects and allow damp areas to dry before painting.
- Clean and prepare. Follow the label’s guidance for washing, priming and dealing with previously painted or porous surfaces.
- Apply the specified coats. Respect the stated recoat interval; coverage figures are estimates, not a guarantee that one coat will hide a contrasting colour.
- Allow full curing. Do not begin detergent washing until the local instructions say the film has cured.
- Keep the tin information. Record the product name, colour and batch details in case you need matching touch-up paint later.
Is Class 1 scrub resistance a guarantee against damage?
No. Class 1 is a performance classification reported in the 2025 EasyCare technical sheet, while “twenty times tougher” is a Dulux marketing comparison. Neither statement authorises abrasive scouring, bleach or unrestricted chemical use. Cleaning technique, pressure, cloth texture, wall preparation and curing all affect the result.
Dulux’s UK guidance specifically points to a soft non-abrasive cloth and a non-bleach cleaner. If the local label allows a different product, that local instruction takes priority; otherwise, avoid bleach and abrasive pads.
Does the paint protect against bacteria?
The Malaysian EasyClean technical sheet mentions antibacterial performance under test conditions. That wording is narrower than a general health-protection claim: it describes a controlled test, not proof that painted walls eliminate household germs or replace normal cleaning and hygiene. Do not choose the paint as a substitute for ventilation, safe food handling or routine sanitation.

What are the common buying and cleaning mistakes?
Assuming every regional tin is identical
Easycare and EasyClean names are used in different markets. A Malaysian technical sheet should not be treated as the specification for a UK tin, and vice versa.
Reading “20 times tougher” as an independent score
The phrase is Dulux’s own claim. It does not tell you how the paint compares with every washable product or how it handles a particular stain.
Washing too soon
Early detergent cleaning can interfere with a film that has not fully cured. Use the period on the local label; the Malaysian sheet’s seven-day instruction is not a universal rule for every market.
Using aggressive tools
Scouring pads, bleach and heavy pressure can damage the appearance or remove paint. The UK FAQ’s soft-cloth, non-bleach approach is the safer starting point.

Expecting a washable wall to hide poor preparation
Grease, dust, loose paint and dampness remain adhesion problems. Prepare the substrate properly before relying on the topcoat’s cleaning properties.
So, who should buy Dulux Easycare?
It is a practical fit for households that can identify a recurring cleaning burden: children’s handprints along a stair route, food splashes near a dining area, muddy marks in an entrance or pet traffic through a hallway. In those situations, a wipeable matt finish can reduce the disruption of frequent repainting.

For a low-contact room, the benefit is smaller and a conventional emulsion may meet your needs. Make the final decision with the exact local specification and price in front of you, not with a generic promise attached to a product name used in several countries.
