Yes—Mixkit currently offers free downloads for many personal and commercial projects. You can generally use its stock video, music, sound effects, and templates in online videos, social posts, podcasts, websites, and online advertisements without paying or adding attribution. But Mixkit is not a public-domain library, and the permission depends on the specific asset and its license.
The two rules most likely to affect creators are that some stock videos have a Restricted License for non-commercial use, while Mixkit music has specific exclusions for CDs, DVDs, video games, television, and radio. Always check the individual asset before publishing.
What is Mixkit?
Mixkit is a free creative-asset library associated with Envato, according to Mixkit’s own information page. It offers:

- Music tracks
- Sound effects
- Video-editing templates
- Digital art and related creative assets
As an August 2026 snapshot, Mixkit’s homepage displayed more than 46,000 stock-video clips, more than 1,000 music tracks, more than 3,000 sound effects, and 851 video templates. These figures change, so they should not be treated as permanent inventory totals.

Is Mixkit actually free?
For the assets Mixkit lists as free, the download price is generally zero. Mixkit currently advertises downloads without sign-up, unlimited downloads, and no watermarks on its video downloads. Its asset pages also generally state that attribution is not required, although Mixkit appreciates credit when it is practical.
That describes the cost of downloading the file—not unlimited legal permission. “Free” does not mean public domain, unrestricted, or owned by you. Mixkit’s Terms say that downloading an item gives you a non-exclusive license and does not transfer ownership.
Can you use Mixkit commercially?
Often, yes. The answer changes by asset type and, in some cases, by the license displayed on the individual asset page.
| Asset | Commercial-use position | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Stock video | Videos under the Mixkit Video Free License may be used in commercial projects, including YouTube videos, social-media marketing, online advertisements, and music videos. | Some videos carry a Restricted License intended for non-commercial or personal use. |
| Music | Mixkit lists YouTube videos, blogs, music videos, websites, social media, podcasts, and online advertisements as permitted uses. | The music FAQ excludes CDs, DVDs, video games, television broadcasts, and radio broadcasts. |
| Sound effects | Mixkit says sound effects can be used in commercial and personal projects, including YouTube, social media, and online marketing advertisements. | Do not redistribute the raw sound file as a standalone asset. |
| Video templates | Templates may be used in commercial and personal projects without attribution or sign-up. | Check the required application, version, operating system, plugins, fonts, and included media. |
| Art | Art is included in Mixkit’s license system. | Check the specific asset’s license before commercial use. |
See Mixkit’s license page and the relevant asset page rather than applying the rules for one category to another.
The important trap: Free License versus Restricted License
Do not assume every Mixkit video is cleared for commercial use. Mixkit’s stock-video page identifies both Free License and Restricted License videos.
A video under the Free License may be suitable for commercial projects such as monetized YouTube videos, business social content, and online advertising. A video marked Restricted should be treated as non-commercial or personal-use material unless the current license explicitly provides broader permission.
That means a Restricted video should not be used automatically in:

Music has separate media restrictions
Mixkit’s music permissions are broad for online publishing. The music FAQ lists YouTube, blogs, music videos, websites, social-media platforms, podcasts, and online advertisements.
It also lists media where the music cannot be used under the stated terms: CDs, DVDs, video games, television broadcasts, and radio broadcasts. A track that is suitable for a podcast or YouTube video is therefore not automatically suitable for a game soundtrack or broadcast commercial.

Does Mixkit require attribution?
Generally, no. Mixkit’s video, music, sound-effect, and template pages state that attribution is not required. Mixkit nevertheless encourages users to credit or tag the service where practical.
Recommended Free Tools
There is a difference between “attribution is not required under the Mixkit license” and “there are no other legal obligations.” An asset may contain a recognizable brand, logo, artwork, person, or other third-party element. Those components can raise separate trademark, copyright, publicity, property, or clearance questions.
A voluntary credit can also be sensible for client work and public-facing projects, even when it is not required. It does not replace checking the license or obtaining additional permissions where necessary.
Is Mixkit copyright-free?
That phrase needs qualification. Mixkit uses “copyright free” and “royalty-free” in some of its stock-video information, but its Terms describe the download as a non-exclusive license, not a transfer of copyright.
The precise takeaway is:
- You may use the asset without paying royalties within the applicable license terms.
- The asset is not necessarily public domain.
- The original copyright may remain with the creator or rights holder.
- You do not acquire ownership merely by downloading the file.
- Other users may receive permission to use the same asset.
Is Mixkit safe for monetized YouTube videos?
Mixkit’s official pages expressly list YouTube as an allowed use for Free License stock video, music, and sound effects. Templates can also be used in commercial projects. This makes Mixkit a practical source for many monetized channels.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHowever, license permission is not a promise that YouTube’s automated systems will never issue a copyright claim. For every important upload:
- Save the asset URL and title.
- Record the license shown on the asset page.
- Save the download date and downloaded file.
- Keep a screenshot or copy of the relevant license language.
If a claim appears, preserve that evidence and use YouTube’s dispute process. If the claim cannot be resolved promptly, replacing the music with a provider that offers clearer claim-management support may be more practical.
Can you use Mixkit for client work and advertising?
Yes, many assets may fit freelance editing, small-business content, promotional videos, social-media marketing, and online advertisements—provided the individual asset’s license permits the intended use.
Do not promise a client that every Mixkit asset is cleared for every campaign or distribution channel. A client may require formal chain-of-title records, model or property releases, indemnification, broadcast rights, or a provider that actively manages platform claims. Mixkit’s Terms provide assets “as-is,” disclaim warranties, and place important responsibilities on the user.

What you cannot do with Mixkit assets
Mixkit’s Terms restrict treating downloaded items as a competing stock inventory or redistributing them as standalone files. In practical terms:
Best Value
- Usually acceptable: incorporating a clip, track, sound effect, or template into an edited video, advertisement, podcast, or other larger creative work.
- Not acceptable: uploading the raw clip to another stock-media website.
- Not acceptable: sublicensing or reselling the original file.
- Potentially problematic: selling a template or digital pack made mainly from unmodified Mixkit files.
- Not acceptable: printing an unaltered Mixkit asset on merchandise merely to resell it.
- Not acceptable: making Mixkit files available as a stock or inventory service.
Meaningful creative work should transform the asset into a finished production; it should not simply pass the downloaded file on to someone else.

Mixkit’s Terms warn that an item may contain third-party material, including trademarks, brand names, logos, copyrighted components, open-source material, or Creative Commons components. Such material may not be cleared for every intended use.
Review assets especially carefully when they show:
- Recognizable products, logos, or brand names
- People whose likeness is central to a commercial message
- Private property or distinctive interiors
- Artwork, packaging, or copyrighted designs
- Political, medical, financial, or other sensitive advertising subjects
For high-value advertising, merchandise, broadcast, or campaigns centered on a recognizable brand or person, obtain the necessary permissions or use a provider with the clearance documentation your client requires.
How to check a Mixkit asset before publishing
- Open the individual asset page. Do not rely only on a search-result label or a general article.
- Identify the asset type. Video, music, sound effect, template, and art can have different rules.
- Find the displayed license. Pay particular attention to whether a video is marked Free or Restricted.
- Read the applicable rule on Mixkit’s license page.
- Match the license to your use. Consider monetization, client work, advertising, online versus broadcast distribution, and whether the file will be used as background or redistributed.
- Inspect the content. Look for people, logos, products, artwork, and other elements requiring separate review.
- Download from Mixkit. Avoid relying on third-party mirrors.
- Save evidence. Keep the asset URL, title, license, download date, file, and a screenshot or copy of the relevant terms.
- Build it into a larger work. Do not upload or sell the raw file as a standalone product.
Templates: check compatibility before downloading
Mixkit’s template library covers Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, Final Cut Pro, and DaVinci Resolve. Mixkit also says the latest version of the relevant application may be required for seamless operation.
Before committing to a template, check:
- The application and version required
- Operating-system compatibility
- Required plugins
- Included fonts and whether they must be installed separately
- Whether stock footage, music, or graphics are included
- Whether the project is genuinely editable or merely a rendered file
Where Mixkit fits—and where it does not
Mixkit is a strong fit when:
- Your project is primarily online.
- You need free b-roll, background music, sound effects, or templates.
- You can verify the license for each asset.
- You are incorporating the files into a finished creative work.
- You accept that third-party rights may require separate review.
Choose another source when:
- Music must be used in television, radio, video games, CDs, or DVDs.
- A client requires formal indemnification or chain-of-title documentation.
- You need to resell or redistribute the raw asset.
- You need highly exclusive footage.
- The project depends on a particular celebrity, brand, logo, property, or model release.
- You need coordinated licensing across many territories and media.
- Automated platform-claim management is a major requirement.
Mixkit compared with alternatives
Mixkit’s main advantage is cost and convenience. Paid services may offer larger catalogs, stronger clearance documentation, more exclusive material, or better claim support, but current pricing and licensing should be checked on each provider’s official site.
- Envato Elements: a natural paid upgrade for a broader library of footage, music, templates, graphics, and fonts.
- Adobe Stock: suited to Adobe-centered agencies and businesses seeking premium media and workflow integration.
- Shutterstock: suited to productions needing a broad paid stock catalog and multiple licensing options.
- Artlist: focused on recurring creators who prioritize music and sound-effect catalog depth.
- Epidemic Sound: useful when frequent YouTube and social publishing makes music licensing and claims central concerns.
- Pixabay and Pexels: other free-media sources, but their licenses are not identical to Mixkit’s and must be checked separately.
For an occasional online project, paying for a subscription may be unnecessary. For broadcast, games, high-value advertising, or clients demanding formal legal assurance, a premium or directly commissioned asset may be the more appropriate choice.
Final verdict
Mixkit is genuinely useful and generally free to download for online creative work. Its Free License assets can support monetized videos, social content, podcasts, websites, and online advertising without required attribution in many cases.
