Ideogram Canvas: What the Infinite AI Image Workspace Does and Costs

Ideogram Canvas is an expandable AI workspace for arranging, generating, combining and editing images. Here is how Magic Fill and Extend work, what plans include, and why Canvas is not a replacement for a layered design editor.

Ideogram Canvas is an expandable, AI-first workspace for generating, arranging, combining, remixing, and editing images. Ideogram launched it on October 22, 2024—not in 2026—and it remains an active feature. Canvas is not a new image model or a full replacement for Photoshop, Illustrator, or Figma. Its main advantage is letting creators move from one generated image to a broader composition without repeatedly downloading, re-uploading, and rebuilding assets.

What Ideogram Canvas does

Canvas provides an open-ended board where users can generate images directly, upload or paste existing artwork, place several images together, select areas for AI editing, add text, and download the finished composition. Ideogram describes it as an “infinite creative board” for organizing, generating, editing, and combining images.

The workspace brings several operations together:

  • Generate: create new images from text prompts directly on the board.
  • Remix: modify an existing image or selected composition.
  • Magic Fill: replace or add content inside a selected region. This is generative inpainting.
  • Extend: expand an image beyond its original borders. This is generative outpainting.
  • Text: add text to the composition.
  • Download: export the completed composition as an image.

The launch was primarily a workflow and editing-interface release, rather than the announcement of a separate foundation model. See Ideogram’s launch announcement and its Canvas feature page.

Why an infinite board is useful

The board is useful when the task involves more than producing one isolated image. A designer can place several concepts side by side, compare compositions, combine a product photo with a generated environment, or develop a poster from multiple visual elements.

Typical uses include:

  • Turning a square image into a landscape banner without cropping out the main subject.
  • Replacing an unwanted object or changing part of a background.
  • Combining a real face, product photograph, logo, or brand visual with generated surroundings.
  • Exploring multiple poster, advertisement, thumbnail, or social-media layouts before exporting one.
  • Building visual concepts where typography and image composition matter together.

“Infinite” refers to the expandable workspace, not unlimited resolution, unlimited generations, or an unrestricted free service. Generated and edited areas are controlled by a generation window, which determines the region, size, aspect ratio, and placement of the operation. The Canvas documentation does not establish a maximum board size or a Photoshop-style layered project export.

Magic Fill: edit a selected area

Magic Fill is designed for changing a defined portion of an image while using the surrounding composition as context. It can be used to remove or replace an object, add a detail, alter a background, correct an imperfection, or generate detail in a zoomed area.

  1. Select the region to change.
  2. Adjust the generation window if the editing area or aspect ratio needs to change.
  3. Write a prompt describing the replacement or addition.
  4. Generate and review the result.
  5. If the blend is poor, make the selection smaller or larger and revise the prompt.

Magic Fill can also help combine several images placed on the same board. For example, a user might upload a product photo, generate a studio background, and select the area where the two should blend. The output remains generative: it may change nearby details, lighting, perspective, or product characteristics rather than behaving like a deterministic selection fill or clone tool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Extend: expand beyond the original edges

Extend is intended to preserve the general style and subject of an image while generating new content outside its existing borders. It is useful for adapting an image to a new format without simply cropping away the original subject.

  1. Select the image.
  2. Move or resize the generation window beyond one of its edges.
  3. Prompt for the newly exposed area.
  4. Generate one or more extensions.
  5. Repeat around other edges if the composition needs to become larger.

A practical example is converting a portrait-oriented image into a wide banner: keep the subject in the original frame, move the generation window into the empty side area, and describe the background that should continue there. Check the result for repeated patterns, inconsistent lighting, warped geometry, and broken text before exporting.

How to open and use Canvas

Ideogram documents two entry points:

  • Click the Canvas icon in the left-side panel to create a new workspace.
  • While viewing an image in detail, open More and choose Open in Canvas.

Images can be added with the Upload control, by copy-and-paste, or by drag-and-drop. New generations appear directly on the board.

Create a composition from scratch

  1. Open Canvas from the left panel.
  2. Generate several concepts with descriptive prompts.
  3. Arrange the alternatives side by side and compare subject placement, typography, color, and composition.
  4. Use Remix or Magic Fill on the strongest candidate.
  5. Add surrounding elements with additional generation windows.
  6. Use Extend to reach the required aspect ratio.
  7. Add text where needed and download the result.

Combine a user image with generated content

  1. Start a Canvas.
  2. Upload, paste, or drag in the source image.
  3. Add another image or generate a new element on the board.
  4. Use Magic Fill over the area where the elements should meet.
  5. Describe the desired environment, lighting, object, or background.
  6. Regenerate with a better-positioned or smaller generation window if the blend is poor.
  7. Use Extend for a different final format, then export.

Ideogram confirms image download, but its public Canvas documentation does not document a Photoshop-style layer export. Treat the downloaded result as a flattened image unless the interface or current documentation says otherwise.

Is Ideogram Canvas free?

Only in a limited sense. Current plan documentation lists a Free tier with two canvases and 10 slow credits per week, but Free does not include image upload, Magic Fill, or Extend. Free-tier generations are public. Paid plans add privacy and the main upload and editing features.

The following figures reflect Ideogram’s plan information available on August 18, 2026. Prices and plan details can change, so check the live pricing page before subscribing. Annual figures below are annual-billing equivalents, not monthly-billing prices.

Plan Price signal Canvas-related access Credits
Free Free Two canvases; no image upload, Magic Fill, or Extend; generations public 10 slow credits per week
Plus $20/month, or $15/month with annual billing Unlimited canvases, image upload, Magic Fill, Extend, private generation 1,000 priority credits/month plus unlimited slow credits
Pro $60/month, or $42/month with annual billing Unlimited canvases, upload, Magic Fill, Extend, private generation, batch generation 3,500 priority credits/month
Team $30/user/month, or $20/user/month with annual billing; minimum two users Paid Canvas features plus team administration 1,500 priority credits per member/month

The old Basic plan is a legacy plan and is no longer available for new purchases. The launch announcement used broader language about paid access, while the current plan table gives the more useful present-day breakdown.

Credits, queues, and the meaning of “unlimited”

Unlimited canvases means unlimited workspaces for eligible paid users. It does not mean unlimited priority generations, unlimited editing at no cost, unlimited resolution, or unlimited retries.

Ideogram uses credits for image generation and editing. Priority credits process faster; slow-credit jobs can take several minutes depending on capacity and usage. Monthly priority credits expire at the end of the billing cycle. Purchased top-up credits roll over and are used after the monthly allocation is exhausted.

The plan documentation lists $4 priority-credit top-ups: 150 credits for Plus, and 250 credits for Pro and Team. Credit consumption varies by model and rendering setting. Older documentation lists Ideogram 3.0/3.0m Canvas examples of 2 credits for four images in Turbo, 4 in Default, and 6 in Quality. Those figures should not be treated as universal current Canvas pricing now that Ideogram’s model lineup has moved on to Ideogram 4.0; check the live interface before estimating a project.

What Canvas does well

  • Fast visual iteration: multiple concepts can remain visible and comparable on one board.
  • Prompt-based editing: Magic Fill and Extend can handle changes that would otherwise require several separate steps.
  • Typography-oriented concepts: Ideogram positions text, branding, logos, posters, and layouts as important strengths.
  • Format adaptation: Extend is useful when a square or portrait asset must become a banner or landscape composition.
  • Early-stage brand work: users can test visual directions before refining a chosen concept in a conventional editor.

Where Canvas falls short

Canvas is best understood as an AI-assisted compositing and concepting environment, not a conventional design document. Ideogram’s public documentation confirms generation, remixing, inpainting, outpainting, text, organization, and export. It does not establish support for the full set of features expected from a professional raster, vector, or collaborative editor, including fully controlled layers, vector paths, nondestructive adjustment layers, detailed typography controls, color-management workflows, or production-grade collaboration.

That creates several trade-offs:

  • Speed versus precision: prompt edits are fast, but they may alter details that should remain untouched.
  • Composition versus consistency: combining or extending images can introduce mismatched scale, shadows, perspective, faces, hands, or lettering.
  • Generative versus deterministic editing: Magic Fill and Extend invent pixels rather than applying an exact manual operation.
  • Convenience versus privacy: Free-tier work is public, which makes it unsuitable for confidential concepts unless the applicable plan and terms provide appropriate protection.
  • Convenience versus editability: a flattened export may require rebuilding the work in another application for production changes.

Common failure modes

Selection too broad: Magic Fill may change nearby objects or details that were meant to remain unchanged.
Selection too narrow: the new area may not have enough context to match surrounding lighting, perspective, or texture.
Generation window poorly placed: the model may misunderstand which part of the composition is being edited.
Text in a generated region: new copy can be misspelled, warped, or inconsistent with existing typography.
Perspective mismatch: combined images may disagree about camera angle, scale, shadows, or depth.
Style drift: repeated Extend operations can gradually change the source image’s visual language.
Identity drift: faces, logos, and other recognizable brand elements may change during generative editing.
Credit surprises: retries, quality rendering, and multiple edits can consume credits quickly.
Export limitations: the public documentation confirms downloading a final composition but does not document a layered project export.

Privacy and commercial use

Privacy should be a deciding factor for client work, unreleased products, faces, and confidential brand concepts. Current plan documentation lists Free generations as public and private generation as a paid feature. Do not upload sensitive material to a plan that does not provide the privacy level your project requires.

Ideogram says it does not claim ownership of generated images or restrict users’ ability to use them, but that is not a guarantee that every output is legally safe for every commercial use. Is Canvas a replacement for Photoshop, Illustrator, or Figma?

No—not based on the capabilities Ideogram documents publicly.

  • Ideogram Canvas: AI generation, prompt-based editing, image combinations, variations, text-led visual concepts, and rapid composition.
  • Photoshop: detailed raster editing, retouching, masking, compositing, and color control.
  • Illustrator: vectors, scalable artwork, precise logos, and typography.
  • Figma: collaborative interface and product design.
  • Canva: template-led graphics, presentations, social posts, and publishing workflows.

Canvas can be a useful first stage before a design is refined elsewhere. It is a poor fit when the final file must preserve editable layers or vectors, exact brand colors and type, precise manual masks, dense legal copy, or a mature production handoff.

Who should use it?

Hobbyists and social creators can use Canvas to explore variations and adapt images to different formats, although the Free tier is limited and public.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Designers and marketers are the strongest fit when the work involves fast concepting, posters, advertisements, branded scenes, thumbnails, or generated backgrounds. Plus is the most relevant paid starting point for an individual who needs uploads, privacy, Magic Fill, and Extend.

High-volume creators and agencies may benefit from Pro’s larger priority-credit allocation and batch generation, but only if the workload justifies the price and the final work can be completed in a conventional editor when needed.

Small teams should consider Team when centralized billing and administration matter. A solo user generally has little reason to pay for a multi-seat plan.

Developers should distinguish Canvas from the Ideogram API. The API account and consumer-app subscription are separate. The API is intended for programmatic generation, remixing, editing, reframing, and background replacement—not for providing an interactive visual board. Current API pricing is charged per output image; Ideogram’s API pricing page lists Ideogram 4.0 Turbo at $0.03 per image, Default at $0.06, and Quality at $0.10, with volume discounts available for annual commitments. See the API documentation and API pricing.

Alternatives by job

Choose by workflow rather than assuming one tool is universally better:

  • Adobe Photoshop and Firefly suit users who need conventional editing, layers, masking, and Adobe integration.
  • Canva suits template-driven marketing graphics, presentations, and lightweight publishing.
  • Midjourney suits image ideation when a dedicated compositing board is not the priority.
  • Figma suits collaborative interface and product-design work.
  • Stable Diffusion-based tools suit users who need local control, custom models, or extensive workflow customization.

Alternative prices and capabilities change frequently and should be checked on each vendor’s official site.

Bottom line

Ideogram Canvas is most compelling as an AI-assisted workspace for visual exploration and compositing. It makes it easier to keep several generated ideas together, blend images, replace selected regions, and expand a composition into a new format. Its limits matter just as much: paid access is generally required for uploads and the main editing tools, generations still consume credits, Free work is public, and the public documentation does not establish the editable layers and precision controls of professional design software.

For a designer, marketer, or creator who values prompt-based iteration and typography-aware image generation, Canvas can shorten the path from idea to visual concept. For production artwork requiring exact manual control, editable layers, vectors, or confidential workflows, it is better treated as a companion to—rather than a replacement for—a conventional editor.
