Jon McNaughton is an American painter known for overtly political realist works that turn conservative and religious arguments into clear visual allegories. Paintings such as The Forgotten Man and One Nation Under God combine contemporary political concerns with historical and Christian symbols. To understand them, it helps to distinguish what each image depicts, what McNaughton says it means, and how audiences and critics have responded.
Who is Jon McNaughton?
McNaughton’s career includes landscapes and religious scenes as well as the political paintings that made him widely known. The World from PRX reports that he made a living painting landscapes and religious subjects before 2008; later works including One Nation Under God and The Forgotten Man circulated widely online and established his profile as a protest painter. His political imagery developed during the Obama era and continued to respond to later political debates. The World from PRX’s 2018 report discusses that career shift.
McNaughton describes himself as an outspoken critic of the left and says his art is meant to communicate his beliefs directly. In his official biography, he writes: “The purpose of my painting is to communicate my ideas. American politics is filled with nuance and shades of grey, but I see the world through a prism of light and truth. My art reflects who I am and doesn’t use nuance or shades of grey to make my point. I want future generations to know exactly how I felt during this time in our country’s history.” This statement makes the work’s explicitness part of its purpose, rather than an accidental feature. McNaughton’s official biography and work explanations are primary sources for his stated views.

McNaughton builds staged compositions from recognizable people, institutions, religious imagery and national symbols. Rather than hide the political references in subtle visual codes, the paintings make them legible and invite viewers to read the scene as an argument. Scroll characterizes the references as direct, and McNaughton himself says he does not aim for ambiguity. Scroll’s 2018 profile considers how that approach works.

That directness does not make the artist’s explanation the only possible interpretation. His comments establish what he says he intended; they do not independently verify the political claims the paintings make. A careful reading keeps the depicted symbols, McNaughton’s account of them, and viewers’ responses distinct.
What does The Forgotten Man mean?
McNaughton says he made The Forgotten Man in response to passage of the Affordable Care Act. Its central figure is a seated man surrounded by presidents and discarded papers about public issues. In the artist’s account, the man represents Americans he believes political leaders have neglected, while the surrounding figures and papers express his criticism of political decisions and expanding government.

McNaughton explicitly rejects a racial interpretation of the central figure and describes the painting as nonpartisan, while also grounding its message in limited-government and constitutional principles. These are his interpretations of the composition, not a neutral consensus about its politics. The Guardian’s 2016 commentary placed the image in the political moment and highlighted the gap between its blunt sentiment and skeptical critical responses. McNaughton’s page says that after the 2016 election Sean Hannity bought the original and publicly connected it to the “Forgotten Man.” The Guardian’s 17 November 2016 commentary addresses the painting’s reception.
What is the meaning of One Nation Under God?
One Nation Under God places a symbolic Christ holding the Constitution among historical figures and other symbols. McNaughton says the figures represent people who positively influenced the country and its Constitution. He presents the painting as a personal expression of his love of Christ and America and his concern about the country’s direction. He also says he hoped it would prompt dialogue and debate and states that it is not a Republican painting.
The Washington Post describes the work as a massive canvas featuring Christ with the Constitution and a large cast of historical figures, placing it within McNaughton’s recurring political symbolism. The religious and national imagery gives the work its argument: the artist links the country’s political future to Christian faith and constitutional heritage. That reading follows McNaughton’s account, while viewers may interpret the combination differently. The Washington Post’s 15 May 2018 report describes the painting and his evolving political imagery.
How do the two paintings differ?
| Painting | Central imagery | McNaughton’s stated subject and purpose |
|---|---|---|
| The Forgotten Man | A seated common person, presidents and discarded issue papers. | A response to the Affordable Care Act and an allegory of the ordinary American McNaughton believes has been neglected; a critique of political decisions and government growth. |
| One Nation Under God | Christ holding the Constitution amid historical figures and national symbols. | A personal expression of love of Christ and America, concern about the country’s direction, and an invitation to dialogue; McNaughton says it is not a Republican painting. |
The first painting centers on a citizen and the decisions surrounding him; the second presents a religious and historical vision of the nation. Both make political viewpoints visible through symbolic scenes, but their subjects and stated purposes are not interchangeable.

McNaughton’s work has attracted support, controversy, criticism and satire. His own site acknowledges viewers who love and hate the paintings. The Guardian offered a skeptical response to The Forgotten Man; The World from PRX documented McNaughton’s prominence and his view of the effect of his work; regional reporting noted attention from conservative media as well as satirical treatment on The Colbert Report. The Salt Lake Tribune’s 26 August 2017 report covers that mix of prominence and controversy.
