Aaron Renier created Google’s tribute to cartoonist Mario Miranda, published on May 2, 2016, for what would have been Miranda’s 90th birthday. Its crowded, rain-soaked Mumbai street draws on the layered scenes and distinctive characters that made Miranda’s work recognizable.

Who created the Mario Miranda Google Doodle?
Google named American cartoonist Aaron Renier as the guest artist for the Doodle, which launched on May 2, 2016, Miranda’s 90th birth anniversary. Google’s official Doodle page identifies Renier and explains his approach to the tribute.
What does the Doodle show?
The illustration evokes a bustling Mumbai street in the rain. People crowd the scene beneath umbrellas, while a figure drawing in a window nods to Miranda himself. The many small interactions give the image the feel of a city observed at street level. Contemporary coverage by The New Indian Express also described the busy, umbrella-filled setting.

How did Renier adapt Miranda’s style?
Miranda was known for intricate, Mumbai-centered scenes populated by distinctive characters. Renier said he approached the work as though he were drawing alongside Miranda: “I approached Mario’s work by pretending I was drawing with him.” He also said, “I chose his most popular style, very flat with criss-crossing interactions.”
Those choices help explain why the Doodle emphasizes a dense crowd rather than a single central figure. Google describes Renier as an artist known for portraying large crowds; the shared interest in busy scenes made him a fitting choice for a tribute to Miranda’s socially observant compositions.
