Jordan’s flag has three equal horizontal bands—black, white and green from top to bottom—with a red triangle at the flagstaff and a white seven-pointed star inside it. For an accurate image, use the constitutional 2:1 flag proportion and check the triangle and star geometry, not just the colors.
Jordan flag design at a glance
- Top band: black.
- Middle band: white.
- Bottom band: green.
- At the hoist: a red triangle containing a white seven-pointed star.
The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates (MFA) describes this as the flag’s current form, in use since 1922. The bands are equal in height, and the flag’s length is twice its width, as specified in Article 4 of Jordan’s Constitution. MFA: Flag · King Abdullah II official website: Constitution
Official proportions for drawing or checking an image
Article 4 specifies more than the familiar colors. The red right triangle sits at the flagstaff; its base equals the flag’s width, and its height equals half the flag’s length. The star is white and has seven rays. Its containing circle has a diameter of one fourteenth of the flag’s length. Its center is at the intersection of lines joining the triangle’s corners, and the axis through one star point runs parallel to the triangle’s base. These dimensions are stated by the Jordanian MFA in its reproduction of Article 4. Read the MFA’s flag specification.

For a quick check, begin with a rectangle twice as long as it is high. Divide it into three equal horizontal bands, then place the red triangle at the left edge. A generic flag icon may get the colors right but simplify the triangle or use a star with the wrong number or orientation of points.
History and symbolism
The MFA says the flag in its current form began use in 1922 and derives in shape and colors from the flag of the Great Arab Revolt, which began in Mecca in 1916. The official website of King Abdullah II also gives 1922 as the adoption year. MFA: Flag · King Abdullah II official website: Constitution

- Black: the Umayyad Arab Islamic civilization.
- White: the Abbasid Arab Islamic civilization.
- Green: the Fatimid Arab Islamic civilization.
- Red triangle: the Hashemite family.
- Seven-pointed star: the seven verses of the Quran’s opening sura, Al-Fatiha.
