In Suspensión, Ana Teresa Barboza combines embroidery on cloth with woven or knitted thread to make landscape compositions that extend beyond their textile support. The series is dated to Lima, 2012–2013, on the artist’s official page. Its movement from stitched image to thread projecting into space is also the feature Wu Galería identifies as changing how viewers perceive and read the works.
What is Ana Teresa Barboza’s Suspensión?
Suspensión is a series, not one artwork. Barboza’s official series page places it in Lima and dates it to 2012–2013. The listed works pair embroidery on cloth with thread construction: the artist describes weaving in the entries for the numbered works, and the materials include cotton thread and, in one work, wool. The series includes more than the three numbered works. The artist’s page also lists a “Tejido de materiales flexibles” work measuring 20 × 60 cm, among other embroidered or woven pieces. Those records show the range of textile approaches without establishing that the numbered works are a complete inventory.

In conventional framed embroidery, the stitching remains within the textile surface and its frame. Barboza’s works bring embroidery together with weaving or knitting, allowing thread to continue beyond the support and occupy space outside its boundary. That shift matters especially for landscape. Instead of treating the landscape only as an image contained on cloth, the work lets textile construction become a physical extension of the composition. The boundary between pictured scene and material object becomes less fixed; the viewer encounters both stitched image and threadwork projecting into space. This is Wu Galería’s interpretation of the series, rather than a verified statement by Barboza about her intentions.

The entries and measurements above follow the artist’s own page. Wu Galería’s English portfolio separately lists a work titled Suspensión III, dated 2013, as embroidery and knitted yarn measuring 85 × 60 cm. How to look at the series
- Notice the support: begin with the embroidered cloth and how it presents landscape as an image.
- Follow the thread: look for where weaving or knitting continues beyond the cloth or frame.
- Consider the spatial change: compare the contained stitched surface with the threadwork’s extension into the surrounding space, and how that changes the way the landscape is read.
