A “large” patchwork bag has no standard dimensions: the examples here range from about 41 × 39 cm to 19 × 13 × 4.5 inches, while a sewing pattern finishes at about 17 × 20 × 6 inches. If you’re buying, compare the actual measurements, pockets, straps, construction and care instructions. If you’re sewing, choose a pattern first so you can buy the right combination of fabric, lining, batting and stabilizer.
What counts as a large patchwork bag?
There is no single size threshold in these listings. A bag’s stated width and height may not tell you how much it carries: depth, a gusset, a flat base and interior layout all affect usable space. Measurements also describe different things across listings, including finished bags and patterns; check whether handles are included rather than assuming they are.

These are individual product and pattern specifications, not an industry size guide. A listed measurement is most useful when paired with the features that determine shape and capacity.
What to check before buying
Shape, structure and materials
Patchwork describes the pieced exterior, not a particular level of stiffness or padding. The examples use different combinations: A Circular Story describes reclaimed cotton shirts, wool-blanket wadding, cotton lining and reclaimed-cotton straps; Quilty Patch describes a quilted, lined cotton tote with a gusseted flat bottom and stabilizer. A pattern may call for batting and base interfacing instead. Look for those specifics in the listing, because a quilted exterior alone does not establish how firmly the bag holds its shape.

Pockets and closure
Organization varies. The cited finished bags include a large front pocket, two deep inside pockets, or five internal slip pockets, while the Sew Nikki pattern specifies an outer pocket and a divided inner pocket. A zipper appears in the Sew Magazine pattern materials, but that does not mean every patchwork bag closes with one. Confirm pocket count, location and closure in the particular listing.
Strap fit
Check handle length and how the maker describes the carry style. A Circular Story says its handles are long enough for shoulder wear, but does not give a shoulder-drop measurement. Patchworksathome lists 28-inch handles; Quilty Patch lists 52 cm handles. Neither measurement by itself establishes how the handles will fit over your shoulder, because the listings do not state a drop. Compare the bag’s handle construction and dimensions with a tote you already find comfortable.

Care instructions
Follow the seller’s instructions for the specific materials and construction. For its wool-wadded reclaimed tote, A Circular Story advises avoiding washing where possible; if necessary, gently hand wash in cool water, use a slow spin and air dry, without tumble drying. The Handmade House and Quilty Patch recommend hand washing. SuperBee says its particular reversible tote can be machine washed up to 60 °C. Those directions are not interchangeable: the care guidance for one bag should not be applied to another.

If you want to make a bag, choose the pattern before shopping for supplies. Patterns vary in finished size, pocket arrangement, closure and the support needed at the base. The examples below show why it is better to follow a pattern’s own materials list than to assume one standard patchwork-tote recipe.

Plan the materials around the pattern
Depending on the design, supplies may include patchwork fabric or scraps, lining, batting or wadding, interfacing or a base stiffener, straps, thread and a zipper. Not every pattern uses every item. For example, the Sew Magazine page lists a zipper and base-stiffener suggestion, while the Patchworksathome pattern specifies batting and base interfacing. Check the complete instructions for quantities and construction details before cutting fabric.

Use scraps without losing control of fit
Offcuts can suit a patchwork project: ROBERTS | WOOD describes its patterns as using remnants and fabric offcuts. A pattern with a specified number and size of pieces, such as Patchworksathome’s 32 fabric squares, gives you a defined starting point. Keep seam allowances consistent; the designer specifically cautions that their accuracy affects how the lining fits.

How to decide between buying and sewing
- Choose a finished bag if you want to assess the actual pockets, materials, shape and carry style before using it. Confirm that the listing is available and review its current dimensions and care directions.
- Choose a pattern if you want control over fabric choices or have suitable scraps. Confirm the finished size, skill requirements, pocket and closure design, and whether the product is a digital download rather than a finished bag.
- For either option, compare the details that matter to your use: body dimensions and depth, base shape, pocket layout, handle fit, outer and lining materials, padding or stabilizer, and care instructions.
