A pumpkin quilt block can be made by piecing fabric sections together, sewing joined strips, or appliquéing a pumpkin shape onto a background. Choose a pattern by its construction method and finished size, then use that pattern’s own cutting list—measurements are not interchangeable between designs.

Choose a construction method
These approaches create different looks and call for different steps. Compare the instructions and materials before choosing; the available patterns do not establish one method as universally easiest.

|---|---|---|
| Traditional piecing | Sew shaped fabric pieces together to form the pumpkin, stem, and background. | Burlap and Blossom Patterns offers 6-, 12-, 18-, and 24-inch versions. Check the pattern for whether a stated dimension is finished or unfinished. Burlap and Blossom Patterns |
| Strip piecing | Join orange fabric strips lengthwise to make the pumpkin body, then assemble the rest of the block. | Craftsy’s example is 8½ inches unfinished. Consider whether you want a striped pumpkin and whether the cutting tools and accuracy the instructions call for suit you. Craftsy tutorial |
| Appliqué | Position pumpkin shapes on a background and stitch them in place; the pattern may specify fusible web for preparing the shapes. | American Patchwork & Quilting’s example finishes at 4 inches square. Check the pattern’s appliqué preparation directions and select a method you are comfortable following. American Patchwork & Quilting pattern |
Follow the cut list for your chosen pattern
Measurements depend on the block layout. For example, Bloomerie Fabrics’ Pumpkin Patch tutorial specifies the following pieces for one block; these dimensions apply to that tutorial, not to pumpkin blocks generally:
#1 Best Overall
- One pumpkin rectangle: 8 × 7 inches.
- One stem rectangle: 2 × 3½ inches.
- Five background squares: 2 × 2 inches each.
- Two background squares: 3½ × 3½ inches each.
In its first assembly step, the tutorial places four of the background squares right sides together at the corners of the pumpkin rectangle. Follow the linked instructions for the remainder of the assembly and any trimming or sewing details. Bloomerie Fabrics Pumpkin Patch tutorial
For a separate appliqué example, American Patchwork & Quilting uses a 4½-inch cream-print background square, orange and green scraps, and fusible web for its 4-inch finished block. Its page directs makers to choose an appliqué method and follow the corresponding preparation directions. Do not combine its cut sizes with another pattern’s piecing layout.

- FALL THEMED NESTING TEMPLATES: The Pumpkin Nesting Template is perfect for adding seasonal motifs to quilts, home decor, and more! This template includes 3 sizes for versatile crafting; The Large Pumpkin Template measures 8" x 7.75" and Medium: 4.5” x 5.5”, ideal for standout appliqué pieces. The Small Pumpkin Template measures 2.75” x 2.75”, perfect for smaller accents and details.
Match the block to a larger project
Table runner
Freemotion by the River’s tutorial gives a pieced pumpkin block using orange and brown squares, cream pieces, and orange-and-cream half-square triangles. It suggests making three blocks for a table runner measuring 10 × 32 inches. Consult the tutorial for its specific cut sizes and assembly sequence. Freemotion by the River tutorial

Riley Blake Designs’ Pumpkin Paper Scrappy pattern describes a 68 × 73-inch quilt arranged as seven rows of eight blocks, for 56 blocks total. Each block measures 7½ × 7½ inches unfinished; that is the size before the blocks are joined into the quilt, not the finished block size. Riley Blake Designs pattern PDF

- Celebrate Spooky Season with a sampler quilt featuring Ghost, Bat, Cat, Witch, Star, Pumpkin, Owl, Spider, Candy Corn, and Candy Roll blocks
- Everything is made using conventional patchwork techniques. No paper piecing!
- Happy Halloween includes instructions for making a 34” x 42” Small Quilt with one of each block, or a 66” x 82” Large Quilt with four of each block.
Gather materials and tools from the instructions
Fabric is central to all three methods, but additional needs depend on the pattern. The appliqué example above includes fusible web; Craftsy’s strip-piecing tutorial lists a cutting mat and quilting ruler. Use the supply list for your selected design rather than assuming every pumpkin block needs the same notions or tools.
- For piecing, check the pattern’s fabric colors, shapes, and exact cut dimensions.
- For strip piecing, have the cutting surface and ruler specified by the instructions available.
- For appliqué, check whether the pattern uses fusible web and follow its preparation steps.
Check sizes before cutting and joining
Patterns may give a finished block size, an unfinished block size, or both. Unfinished dimensions include the seam allowance around the block; finished dimensions describe the block after it is sewn into the project. Confirm which measurement a pattern gives before planning a layout or comparing it with another design. In particular, Riley Blake’s 7½-inch figure is explicitly unfinished, while the American Patchwork & Quilting appliqué block is described as finishing at 4 inches square.
