Leather pyrography is drawing a design into leather with a heated pen or tip. For a first project, choose confirmed vegetable-tanned leather, use a tool explicitly intended for leather, and follow its safety instructions. Craft specialists warn against burning chromium-tanned leather; the sources cited here do not establish that every dye, finish, or treatment is safe to heat.
What leather pyrography is
Pyrography uses a heated pen or tip to make marks by burning a design into a surface. On leather, the material and its treatment matter: a tool or technique suitable for one type of leather is not automatically suitable for another.
Choose leather carefully
Use confirmed vegetable-tanned leather
Craft guidance recommends vegetable-tanned leather, especially light-colored tooling leather. Leathercrafttoolbox lists it among the supplies for the craft and says chrome-tanned leather is not recommended for burning because of chemicals used in that tanning process. Sue Walters Pyrography gives direct advice: “As long as it’s vegetable tanned leather. Don’t burn on chromium-tanned leather.” Sue Walters Pyrography’s General Burning FAQ and Leathercrafttoolbox’s leather pyrography guide support this as craft guidance, not a complete toxicological assessment of tanning chemistry.

Vegetable-tanned does not by itself establish that leather is harmless to heat. Dyes, coatings, finishes, and other treatments can vary. Ask the supplier to confirm the tanning method and what has been applied; do not burn material of uncertain provenance.

What tools and supplies you need
A basic setup includes a pyrography pen with a suitable tip, confirmed vegetable-tanned leather, a design, and a way to transfer or mark it. Leathercrafttoolbox also lists water and cotton cloth, a burnishing tool, pencil or pen, tracing paper, and adhesive tape. The exact preparation depends on the project and tool; follow the device maker’s instructions rather than assuming every supply is needed for every piece.
How to choose a leather-burning tool
Dedicated leather pyrography tools are available, but packages differ. Compare the seller’s stated intended material, tip choices, stated controls or specifications, included stand and storage, electrical compatibility for your region, and the clarity of its hazard instructions.

The two listings show why it is worth comparing what is actually included. Neither establishes that one tool design is best for every user or project.
Use the hot tool with care
- Read and follow the instructions for your specific device.
- Keep the hot element clear of flammable materials, and do not touch hot metal.
- Disconnect the tool when it is not in use.
- A pyrography technique guide cautions users not to breathe fumes. The sources cited here do not establish a specific ventilation standard for leather pyrography, so do not treat that caution as a complete safety protocol. Pyrography.co.uk’s leather technique page.
Tandy’s machine listing also warns of fire, burn, and electrical hazards. Those risks make the device’s own instructions and a clear, uncluttered work area important.

What ISO 17074 does—and does not—cover
ISO 17074:2006 is a standardized method for determining the horizontal spread of flame in leather. ISO describes its scope as applying to light leather, particularly leather intended for vehicle passenger compartments, and says the standard was reviewed and confirmed in 2021. It is a material-test method, not a craft tutorial or a direct consumer safety instruction. ISO 17074:2006.
