The right bouquet accents make focal flowers look more intentional: they add texture, color, height, airiness and movement, and help fill gaps without competing with the main blooms. Choose them by the effect your arrangement needs—not by a rule that one accent flower is always best.

What counts as an accent in a bouquet?

There is no single, universally fixed meaning for “accent flower.” West Virginia University Extension separates focal flowers, button or accent flowers, line flowers, fillers, detail flowers and greenery. In its terminology, medium-sized button or accent flowers draw the eye; smaller filler blooms add texture, color and depth around focal flowers; and delicate detail flowers lend airiness and movement. The Centre for Adult Education (CAE) uses broader groupings—mass or focal flowers, secondary flowers and fillers—with fillers described as small clustered blooms that soften and fill a bouquet.

In practice, “accent” can mean any supporting bloom or foliage chosen to shape the arrangement’s appearance. It helps to decide what you want that material to do: support the focal flowers, fill a gap, add contrast, create height, or make the bouquet feel lighter.

Choose accents for the effect the bouquet needs

Start with the focal flowers, their color palette and the bouquet’s intended shape. CAE floristry expert Jane advises letting the focal flower’s palette guide the choice of secondary flowers. When the palette is simple, vary shapes and textures to keep the arrangement visually interesting. Iowa State University Extension identifies line, space, texture, pattern, form, color and size as floral-design elements. Texture can read as smooth or rough, glossy or dull, fuzzy, bumpy, prickly or wrinkled; even a small amount of contrasting texture can change how a bouquet feels.

Desired effect Supporting materials to consider How they help
Fill small gaps and soften transitions Baby’s breath, statice, misty, wax flower or rice flower; berries or spray roses Small blooms or clusters occupy spaces around focal flowers and add texture or color.
Add airiness and movement Sweet peas or cosmos West Virginia University Extension describes these delicate blooms as details that can add airiness, elegance and movement.
Build a base, shape or leafy texture Greenery such as eucalyptus or fern Greenery can establish the arrangement’s shape and support its blooms. AP-reported florist Jennifer Murphy says eucalyptus or fern leaves add texture and make an arrangement look fuller.
Add height or seed-like texture Lavender, angelonia or seed heads North Carolina Cooperative Extension identifies these as options for height; seed heads can also contribute texture.
Bring a small, vivid color accent Cornflower North Carolina Cooperative Extension notes that cornflowers can fill spaces and add bright pink, purple or deep-blue color.

These are examples, not a fixed shopping list. The best choice depends on the focal blooms, palette, shape and effect you want. A supporting flower that brings useful contrast in one bouquet may distract in another.

Place accents without letting them take over

  1. Set the outline with greenery. For a hand-tied bouquet, Iowa State University Extension recommends placing greenery around the outside and base to establish a supportive shape.
  2. Position the focal flowers. Arrange the main blooms with attention to balance and proportion before adding smaller supporting material.
  3. Add secondary or accent blooms. Use them around the focal flowers to introduce the particular color, texture or height the arrangement needs.
  4. Fill only the gaps that need it. Add small fillers where they make the bouquet feel cohesive, rather than covering every opening.
  5. Finish with delicate details. West Virginia University Extension recommends adding delicate flowers last to reduce the chance of breaking their stems. Turn the bouquet as you work so you can assess it from more than one side.

CAE offers a starting recipe of one type of mass flower, three to four types of secondary flowers, and one to two types of filler. Treat that as a design prompt, not a required ratio: bouquet size, available flowers and the style you want may call for fewer or more kinds. West Virginia University Extension’s practical caution is to avoid crowding the focal flowers; sometimes fewer accents make the arrangement clearer.

Keep the finished bouquet fresh

For a casual bouquet, North Carolina Cooperative Extension lists a container, flowers and foliage, and shears or scissors as basic materials. Cut stems at an angle. Remove leaves that would sit below the waterline, use clean water and floral preservative, and check the water regularly. Iowa State University Extension advises replacing or checking it when it becomes cloudy or develops an odor; North Carolina Cooperative Extension recommends changing it every couple of days.
