Lessons in Printer-Poop Recycling: From Purge Waste to Usable Filament

Printer poop and other 3D-printing scraps can become filament, but only through a controlled process of sorting, size reduction, drying, extrusion, and testing. Learn what affects output quality and what to check before choosing equipment or curbside recycling.

Yes, printer poop and other 3D-printing scraps can be turned into filament, but the process is more than melting waste. Reliable results require identifying and sorting the plastic, reducing it to suitable feed size, drying it, controlling extrusion and winding, and checking the finished filament and test prints.

For a home user, a shredder alone is not enough, and recycled filament is not automatically equivalent to virgin filament. If you cannot keep the material consistent and verify the output, consider a makerspace or another suitable recycling option instead.

What is printer poop?

“Printer poop” is the informal name for purge material expelled when a printer changes filament, often during multicolor printing. Failed prints, test prints, supports, and other clean scraps can also be potential feedstock. What can be reclaimed depends on knowing what the material is and whether it suits the equipment and process.

How to turn scraps into filament

A practical recycling workflow includes preparation, extrusion, and testing. University of California, Berkeley’s reclamation project describes collecting PLA scraps, granulating them, sorting by granule size and color, dehydrating the material, testing extrusion conditions, and mechanically testing the resulting material against virgin-filament samples.

  1. Identify and sort. Keep known polymers separate, and avoid mixing unknown materials or colors casually. Supports may use a different polymer from the printed part, so do not assume they are compatible. Follow the filament and recycling-equipment manufacturers’ guidance for accepted materials.
  2. Remove contamination. Keep foreign materials and unidentified scraps out of a known batch. Clean, consistent feedstock is easier to process than a mixed bin.
  3. Reduce scrap to the required size. Use a granulator or shredder suited to the selected system, and follow its feed-size requirements. A shredder by itself does not produce printer-ready filament.
  4. Dry the material. Dehydrate prepared granules as directed for the polymer and equipment before extrusion. Berkeley’s project includes drying as part of its process.
  5. Extrude and wind under controlled conditions. An extruder turns prepared granules into a strand. Melt temperature, extrusion speed, cooling, and winding can affect the result; a practical line needs to control the output, not just melt the plastic.
  6. Measure and test. Check dimensions along the filament and print samples before relying on a batch. A digital caliper can be used for spot checks, but it is not a continuous measurement system. Compare sample prints and, where relevant, mechanical behavior with virgin-filament material.

Label each batch with the known polymer and any relevant feedstock details. Treat recycled output as material with a processing history, not as a guaranteed substitute for new filament.

What affects the result?

Factor Why it matters
Material identity and consistency Mixed or unknown feedstock can produce unpredictable output. Sort known polymers and follow equipment guidance.
Scrap size The granulator and extruder have feed requirements. Oversized pieces may need preprocessing.
Moisture Drying is part of the documented Berkeley workflow; follow material and equipment instructions.
Extrusion and cooling Temperature, speed, cooling, and winding are process variables that affect filament consistency.
Measurement and testing Dimensions and print behavior should be checked before using the output for a significant job.

Equipment choices and product claims

Equipment varies: some systems extrude prepared pellets or granules, while a fuller workflow also needs size reduction and drying. Compare what is included, which materials are supported, feed-size requirements, output measurement and winding, and what testing you will need to do. The research does not establish an apples-to-apples cost, yield, or payback comparison.

Creality describes its M1 as a pellet-to-filament extruder and its R1 as an integrated shredder and dryer. Its campaign page lists support for several polymer families and reports throughput and diameter figures, but these are manufacturer claims, not independent test results. The campaign gives a diameter range of 1.70–1.80 mm for virgin PLA pellets and 1.65–1.80 mm for recycled scraps, and says a 50/50 mixture of scrap and virgin PLA can recover value. Do not treat these figures as a general promise for recycled filament or assume current retail availability without checking.

Berkeley’s project, by contrast, describes process development and material testing in a university setting. It supports the feasibility of a controlled workflow, not a guarantee that a home setup will achieve the same results.

Can you use ordinary curbside recycling?

Do not put 3D-printed scraps into curbside recycling without checking local rules. Adafruit’s guide notes that recycling centers may reject failed prints when they lack manufacturing labels; acceptance depends on the local program. Contact the program or check its current guidance before putting scraps in a recycling bin.

Is recycling printer poop worth it?

It depends on how much consistent, identifiable scrap you have and whether you can manage the full process, including drying and testing. A system’s listed throughput or diameter specification does not tell you how much usable filament you will produce from your own feedstock. Account for equipment, preparation, measurement, labor, and output that may need to be rejected; the available research does not provide a verified cost or payback comparison.

FAQ

Can printer poop be turned back into filament?

Yes, if the waste is identified, prepared, dried, and processed in suitable equipment. The resulting filament still needs measurement and print testing.

Can I mix different plastics or supports with purge waste?

Do not assume they are compatible. Keep known polymers separate, and check the filament and recycling-equipment manufacturers’ material guidance, especially when supports may use a different polymer.

Does a shredder make filament?

No. It reduces scrap to a suitable feed size. A filament extruder, appropriate process control, winding, and output checks are also part of a practical workflow.

Is recycled filament as reliable as virgin filament?

Not automatically. Berkeley’s project tests recycled material and compares it with virgin-filament samples, underscoring the need to validate output rather than assume equivalence.

Can I put failed prints in curbside recycling?

Only if your local program accepts them. Check its rules first; some centers may reject printed scraps without manufacturing labels.
