wallust is an open-source Rust command-line tool that analyzes an image and generates a 16-color scheme. On Linux, run wallust run /path/to/wallpaper.jpg to generate colors; wallust can send them to open terminals, cache them, or render them into application configuration files using templates.

What is wallust?

wallust turns an image—often a wallpaper—into a 16-color palette. Its main command is wallust run <image>. The generated colors can be applied to active terminals, saved in cache files, or written into other programs’ configuration through templates. See the official wallust project and its Docs.rs package page for project details.

How do I install wallust on Linux?

The documented Cargo installation route is:

cargo install wallust

You need Rust’s Cargo package manager available. Alternatively, the project documents building from source: clone the repository, build with its Makefile, and run make install. The project also describes installing from a checkout with cargo install --path . and building a release binary.

How do I create a 16-color palette from my wallpaper?

  1. Choose a local image, such as a PNG or JPEG, with colors you want to use across your desktop.

  2. Run wallust with the image path, for example: wallust run /path/to/wallpaper.jpg. The project’s short-form example is wallust run my_wallpaper.png.

  3. Check an already-open terminal to see the generated colors. wallust can also save results under $XDG_CACHE_HOME or, if that variable is not set, $HOME/.cache.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  4. Adjust the palette settings if the output does not suit your image or preferred light/dark appearance.

  5. For other applications, configure templates to write colors to the file or format that the application expects, then reload that application if necessary.

wallust’s configuration is expected at $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/wallust/wallust.toml, or ~/.config/wallust/wallust.toml when $XDG_CONFIG_HOME is not set. The project documents its cache and configuration paths in the official repository.

Why do my generated colors look too similar or too light?

The palette is not determined only by the image. wallust exposes settings that affect how it samples colors, selects distinct colors, arranges them into a scheme, and filters candidates. Change one setting at a time so you can identify what improves the result.

  • Backend: Changes how pixels are sampled or reduced before color selection. Documented options include native methods, k-means, a SIMD fast_resize backend, and an ImageMagick convert route.

  • Color space: Changes how prominent colors are evaluated and separated. A LinuxLinks review notes that wallust uses LCH or other color spaces to avoid near-duplicate colors rather than relying only on HSV; this is a qualitative explanation, not a controlled performance or quality test.

The LinuxLinks review also reports that wallust may take longer because it can generate a scheme repeatedly while searching for an attractive palette. That is a review’s description of its behavior, not a benchmark proving which backend is fastest. The official project documents the available backend, color-space, palette, and threshold configuration in its package documentation.

How do I apply wallust colors to terminals and new sessions?

By default, wallust sends terminal color escape sequences to terminals that are already open. A LinuxLinks review reports that new terminal sessions need shell-startup integration if you want the palette applied whenever they launch. That means a successful run may update your current terminal without automatically configuring every future session.

How do I use wallust templates with other applications?

Templates let wallust turn its colors into files for other programs—for example, CSS, JSON, or an application-specific configuration file. The project supports a subset of Jinja2 by default and can be configured to use pywal-style syntax instead. The target application may need to reload or restart before it reflects the new file.

VS Code example

The community Wallust Theme VS Code project documents one integration. Its setup copies templates and adds outputs to wallust’s configuration, including an entry such as:

vscode = { src = 'vscode.json', dst = '~/.cache/wallust/colors.json' }

Then run wallust run <image>. The extension watches ~/.cache/wallust/colors and colors.json, using a file watcher with a five-second polling fallback. It offers clean and bordered variants and automatic light/dark detection. For stale themes, its documented troubleshooting includes update and clear-cache commands.
