A balanced serger stitch has smooth needle-thread lines on both fabric faces and upper and lower looper threads that meet neatly around the cut edge. The exact dial settings depend on your machine, thread and fabric, so judge the sewn sample—not a universal number.

What a balanced serger stitch looks like

For a three-thread overlock, inspect the seam in three places: the top, the underside and the cut edge. Janome’s 1100D manual and Brother’s stitch guidance describe this arrangement.

  1. Top surface: The needle thread should lie smoothly, not form loose loops.
  2. Underside: Needle and looper threads should lie flat rather than loop loosely.
  3. Cut edge: Upper and lower looper threads should meet and wrap the edge evenly. Neither should hang in large loops beyond it or be pulled conspicuously onto the opposite face.

Brother describes the loopers as “intertwined at the edge of the fabric” and says there should be no looping in the needle threads on either face. These descriptions concern the covered machine and stitch; two- and four-thread configurations have different thread paths and appearances. Check your machine’s manual for the stitch you are sewing.

Diagnose the seam by the thread that is out of place

First make sure the thread is correctly seated in the tension discs. Then use Brother’s symptom guidance as a model-specific starting point, not a universal dial recipe. Change tension by about half or a quarter of a scale marking, sew a fresh sample, and inspect again. Where practical, change one control at a time so you can tell what helped.

What you see Adjustment to try
Needle thread loops on the reverse Increase tension on the corresponding left or right needle thread.
Upper-looper thread shows on the reverse Increase upper-looper tension, reduce lower-looper tension, or adjust both.
Lower-looper thread shows on the surface Reduce upper-looper tension, increase lower-looper tension, or adjust both.
Fabric puckers Reduce needle-thread tension, starting with the left needle thread and then the right on the applicable machine.
Large loops extend beyond the cut edge Increase both looper tensions on the applicable machine.

These are adjustments from Brother’s guidance for its covered machines. Other models may use different controls or responses. Thread tension can also change with fabric thickness and thread type, so consult the manual before treating any setting as a baseline; Brother explains this in its tension guidance.

Separate thread tension from fabric feeding

A seam can ripple or pucker because the fabric is being fed poorly, even when the threads are balanced. Differential feed changes how quickly the front and rear feed dogs move fabric. On the Brother machines covered by its differential-feed guidance, 1.0 means both feed dogs move at the same speed. Below 1.0, the front feed dogs move more slowly and stretch the fabric; above 1.0, they move faster and gather it.

All these accessories are neatly stored in the built-in storage compartment located inside the Cloth Plate, ensuring that everything you need is within easy reach and well-organized for quick access during your sewing projects.
  • A setting below 1.0 can help lightweight fabric that tends to pucker.
  • A setting above 1.0 can help remove rippling in stretch fabrics.
  • Brother cautions against using differential feed on thick, non-stretch fabric such as denim because it may damage the fabric.

Ranges and operation vary by model. Follow your own machine’s manual, and adjust feed separately from thread tension when diagnosing a seam.

Test with the project’s fabric and thread

Use a scrap with the same fabric layers and thread as the project. Check your manual for the suitable needle, thread type, stitch length, stitch width, differential-feed setting and tension. A sample seam makes it possible to see whether a small change improved the result before you sew the garment.

Material-specific recommendations are not interchangeable between machines. For example, Janome’s 792PG guide gives different recommendations for lightweight, mediumweight, heavyweight and knit fabrics; it names HA-1 SP needles in sizes No. 11 or No. 14 depending on material and lists woolly nylon or woolly polyester as looper-thread options for knits. Those are recommendations for that manual’s machine, not universal specifications.

Choose the stitch for the seam, not a supposed quality ranking

Three-thread overlock is a useful example for learning stitch balance, but there is no single thread count that is best for every garment. The number of needles and threads changes the stitch’s coverage and edge finish, and the right choice depends on the seam or edge, fabric weight and stretch, and the threading and adjustments supported by your machine. Refer to the manual’s stitch diagrams and intended uses before changing configurations.
