Choose stitch length from your sewing machine’s manual, then test it on matching fabric and thread. Stitch length controls the spacing between needle penetrations; the right setting depends on the material, thread, and task, and the numbers on one machine may not match another’s scale.

What stitch length means

Stitch length is the distance the fabric advances between one needle penetration and the next. A longer stitch leaves more space between penetrations; a shorter stitch places them closer together.

Controls vary by machine. On the Brother XL3750, the dial numbers represent millimeters: a higher number makes a longer stitch, while zero means the material does not feed. BERNINA’s artista 170 manual, by contrast, specifies a 2.25 mm straight-stitch preset that can be adjusted. Don’t assume a dial number means the same length on every machine; check the manual for your model. Brother XL3750 guidance and the BERNINA artista 170 manual give model-specific examples.

How to choose a starting setting

  1. Identify your machine and stitch. Use the manual to confirm how its length control works, the available range, and whether the selected stitch permits the adjustment you want.
  2. Match the setting to the fabric, thread, and purpose. An ordinary seam, decorative topstitching, and temporary basting have different needs. Manufacturer examples can help you choose a starting point, but they are not universal prescriptions.
  3. Test on a scrap from the project. Use the same fabric and thread, sew a sample, and inspect the stitches and how the fabric behaves. Adjust incrementally and test again. Brother’s XL3750 guidance recommends scrap testing to find a suitable dial position.
  4. Check the whole setup if the result is poor. Stitch selection, needle and thread suitability, threading, tension, and presser-foot setup can affect the seam too; stitch length may not be the cause.

Manufacturer examples for common fabrics and tasks

Fabric or task Published example How to apply it
Denim BERNINA’s artista 170 manual suggests approximately 3–4 mm. SINGER’s FAQ gives a dial range of 4–5 for the machines covered by its denim guidance. These are different machines and controls, not interchangeable values. Check your own manual; SINGER also recommends a denim needle in its guidance. BERNINA manual · SINGER FAQ
Batiste BERNINA’s artista 170 manual suggests approximately 2–2.5 mm. Treat this as an example for that machine and fabric, not a rule for every lightweight material. BERNINA manual
Cordonnet topstitching thread BERNINA’s artista 170 manual suggests approximately 3–5 mm for topstitching with this thread. Thread and the appearance you want both matter, so test the setting on a project scrap. BERNINA manual
Basting Brother’s manual for the covered machine gives a basting stitch-length range of 5–30 mm. This unusually long, removable stitch range is model-specific; check whether your machine offers a basting function and what range it supports. Brother basting manual

What to check when stitches look wrong

  • Confirm the stitch and length setting work together. Some stitches restrict which settings are suitable.
  • Check the needle and thread against the fabric. For denim, SINGER’s guidance for the machines it covers recommends a denim needle as well as a longer dial setting.
  • Review the foot and needle plate instructions. Brother says a straight-stitch foot and needle plate may help with some thin fabrics or small pieces. Its specified combination is only for straight stitching with the needle in the middle position; consult your machine manual before changing parts. Brother manual guidance
  • Check threading and tension. Follow the machine’s instructions rather than trying to fix every irregular stitch by changing length alone.
