On macOS Sequoia 15.x, you can select Apple’s Sequoia aerial—usually shown as Sequoia Sunrise—as a screen saver and, where supported, use the same aerial as your desktop wallpaper. Open Apple menu → System Settings → Wallpaper → Screen Saver, choose the Sequoia visual, download it if a down-arrow appears, and turn on the option to show the aerial as wallpaper.
The instructions below are specifically for macOS Sequoia 15.x. Apple’s later macOS releases may use different wallpaper names, categories, and labels.
What “Sequoia screen saver wallpaper” means
Several different Mac features are often described with the phrase “Sequoia screen saver wallpaper”:

- Wallpaper is the background behind your desktop icons and windows.
- Screen saver is the full-screen animation shown after the Mac has been idle or when you start it manually.
- Lock screen is the authentication screen shown after you lock or wake the Mac.
- Aerial wallpaper is Apple’s video-based system for slow-motion scenes that can connect the screen saver and desktop experience.
- Sequoia Sunrise is the Sequoia-branded animated visual most people mean when searching for this wallpaper. Its exact displayed name can vary between Sequoia point releases.
It is not normally a separate downloadable product. You may be looking for Apple’s built-in animated aerial, a static still image based on the Sequoia design, or a third-party live-wallpaper app.

Apple introduced the screen-saver-to-wallpaper transition with the modern macOS personalization system and continued it in Sequoia. Sequoia itself is macOS 15, released on September 16, 2024. Apple’s release announcement provides the OS context.
Set the built-in animated Sequoia wallpaper
- Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner.
- Choose System Settings.
- Select Wallpaper in the sidebar.
- Open the Screen Saver section.
- Look in the macOS category or another aerial category for Sequoia Sunrise or the equivalent Sequoia visual.
- Select the visual.
- If macOS offers Show as Wallpaper, or similar wording, enable it.
- If you see a downward-arrow download control, click the thumbnail or arrow and wait for the asset to download.
Apple’s current documentation places these controls under System Settings → Wallpaper. Available categories can include macOS, Landscape, Cityscape, Underwater, Earth aerials, Shuffle Aerials, and Other, although labels may differ between macOS versions. See Apple’s screen saver instructions.
To test the result, choose Apple menu → Lock Screen and wait, or configure a Hot Corner to start the screen saver. The automatic delay is controlled under System Settings → Lock Screen.

Why macOS may ask you to download the wallpaper
Some Apple wallpapers and aerials are delivered on demand rather than installed in full with macOS. A downward arrow generally means that the selected asset must be downloaded before it can be used.
- Go to System Settings → Wallpaper.
- Select the desired aerial or wallpaper.
- Click the downward arrow or its thumbnail.
- Wait for the download to finish.
- Select it again if it does not immediately become active.
This built-in download is different from downloading a JPEG, PNG, or video from a wallpaper website. Apple’s supported workflow is through System Settings; it does not require finding the underlying video file manually. Apple explains the download-arrow behavior here.
Use a static Sequoia image instead
A static image is the better choice if you want a dependable background, use a MacBook on battery, or do not need animation. It also avoids playback and scaling problems on multi-monitor setups.

- Save a suitable JPEG, PNG, or supported HEIF/HEIC image to Downloads or Pictures.
- Open Apple menu → System Settings → Wallpaper.
- Scroll to Your Photos, Pictures, or the relevant image source.
- Select the saved image.
- Choose the available fit or crop behavior.
- Check each connected display and desktop Space to confirm where the image was applied.
A third-party Sequoia gallery may provide extracted frames, screenshots, or recompressed files rather than Apple’s original animated asset. For example, AppleWalls’ Sequoia gallery is not an Apple-hosted download, so check the file dimensions and licensing before using or redistributing an image.

Do not rely on labels such as “5K” or “6K” without checking the actual pixel dimensions. For a sharp result, use an image at least as large as the display’s native pixel dimensions. A low-resolution still enlarged across a Retina iMac or large external monitor will look soft even when the source page calls it 5K.
Aspect ratio matters too. A wide image may be cropped on a tall display, while a smaller image may be enlarged to fill the screen. Compression, screenshots, and third-party scaling can also cause blur.
Can the screen saver also be the desktop wallpaper?
Yes, when the selected Apple aerial offers that option. Apple supports using an aerial as the wallpaper while using its slow-motion version as the screen saver. This is different from assigning an arbitrary movie as an ordinary desktop picture.
With a supported aerial:
- The visual can move while the Mac is idle.
- The screen saver and desktop may transition between related states.
- The lock-screen and desktop behavior remains integrated with macOS.
- The exact option label can change between Sequoia point releases and later macOS versions.
Not every screen saver can become a native animated desktop. A photo slideshow selected under Other, for example, should not be assumed to support the same aerial-wallpaper behavior.

Use a normal photograph as the screen saver
If you want a still Sequoia image—or your own photograph—to appear as the screen saver, configure it separately:

- Open System Settings → Wallpaper.
- Choose the image for the desktop under Your Photos or Pictures.
- Open Screen Saver.
- Select Custom.
- Under Other, choose Photos.
- Select Photo Library, Choose Folder, or another offered source.
- Confirm with Choose or OK.
This makes the image source available to the screen saver, but it is not the same as Apple’s animated aerial transition. Apple’s Photos workflow is documented in its screen saver guide.
Fix a missing or broken Sequoia wallpaper
The Mac is not running Sequoia
Check Apple menu → About This Mac. Sequoia is macOS 15; Sonoma is macOS 14. A Mac that can display an image is not necessarily compatible with macOS Sequoia. Check Apple’s official Sequoia compatibility list.
The visual has a download arrow
Click the arrow and allow the download to finish. If it still does not apply, select another wallpaper, return to the Sequoia visual, and select it again.
The visual is under a different category
Check macOS, Landscape, Earth aerials, Shuffle Aerials, and Other. Apple’s current help pages may show categories and names from newer macOS releases, so do not use a later-version screenshot as an exact Sequoia reference.
The wallpaper keeps reverting
- Reopen System Settings → Wallpaper.
- Download the asset again if the arrow is visible.
- Select a different wallpaper, then choose the Sequoia visual again.
- Quit and reopen System Settings, or restart the Mac.
- Install the latest available Sequoia 15.x update.
- Test with one display and one desktop Space.
- Temporarily disable third-party wallpaper utilities.
- If the aerial screen saver works but the desktop does not, use a static image as the fallback.
Apple recommends keeping Sequoia updated for stability, performance, and compatibility improvements, but a general update recommendation does not prove that a particular wallpaper issue is fixed in a particular release. See Apple’s Sequoia update history.
The image looks blurry
Check the original file’s pixel dimensions, not just its advertised resolution. Blur commonly comes from a low-resolution still, a compressed screenshot, enlargement on an external display, aspect-ratio cropping, or scaling performed by a third-party app. Use a source at least as large as the display’s native resolution whenever possible.

Battery and performance considerations
Animated wallpaper and screen-saver playback can use more GPU, CPU, storage, and battery than a static image. The effect depends on the Mac model, Apple silicon or Intel processor, display resolution, refresh rate, number of displays, video format, and whether the animation is active only during idle periods.

A screen saver itself is not necessarily an energy-saving feature: display-off and sleep settings have a greater effect on power consumption than the visual selected.

For ordinary users, do not replace Apple’s system-managed aerial files. The supported approach is to select Apple’s own aerial in System Settings or use a third-party app designed to manage custom animated wallpaper.
Community discussions sometimes identify locations such as /Library/Application Support/com.apple.idleassetsd/Customer/4KSDR240FPS. Treat such paths as implementation details, not Apple-supported installation instructions. They can change, may be protected by macOS, and do not by themselves make a video a valid aerial asset.
Manual replacement can fail because:
- system asset directories may be protected;
- permissions or ownership may block changes;
- the wallpaper and screen saver may use different files or metadata;
- macOS updates can remove or overwrite modifications;
- bad or incomplete assets can produce black screens, missing thumbnails, or reversion; and
- downloaded files may come from untrusted sources or have unclear redistribution rights.
Do not disable System Integrity Protection, use sudo to force a replacement, or alter Apple-managed files merely to obtain the Sequoia animation.

Neither app is necessary for Apple’s built-in Sequoia visual. Use one only if you specifically need custom or expanded animated-wallpaper features.

Is Sequoia Sunrise free?
The built-in Sequoia aerial is included with macOS Sequoia; Apple does not require a separate wallpaper purchase. Availability still depends on the Mac running a supported macOS 15.x installation.

Does the Sequoia aerial work on Intel Macs?
It can work on Intel Macs that support macOS Sequoia, but compatibility with the operating system is the deciding factor. Check Apple’s Sequoia-compatible Mac list rather than relying on the display or processor alone.
Can I use a different wallpaper on each monitor?
macOS can apply wallpaper settings across connected displays and desktop Spaces, with controls such as “Show on all Spaces” where available. Check each display after applying the wallpaper, because cropping and scaling can differ.
Does animated wallpaper reduce battery life?
It can use more resources than a static image, especially with high-resolution animation or multiple displays. On a MacBook running on battery, a static wallpaper is the safer power-saving choice.
What should I do on Sonoma or a later macOS version?
The general Wallpaper and Screen Saver workflow may be similar, but names, categories, and available aerials can differ. Follow instructions and labels for your installed macOS version rather than assuming the Sequoia 15.x interface is identical.
