Magnetic putty is a soft material that moves toward a magnet because it contains iron-based particles. You can make it by kneading iron filings into glue slime or by folding black iron oxide powder into premade putty. These are different recipes: choose one, handle the fine powder carefully, and use a strong magnet with adult supervision.
Choose a recipe: glue slime or premade putty

Both activities are estimated at 20–30 minutes by their respective sources: Science Buddies and National MagLab Magnet Academy. Neither source provides a controlled comparison of magnetic strength, shelf life, cost, or play quality, so there is no evidence-based winner on those measures.
Make magnetic slime with glue
Gather the ingredients and tools
- 1/2 cup washable school glue
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 2 tablespoons contact lens solution containing both boric acid and sodium borate
- At least about 1 tablespoon iron filings
- A bowl, measuring cup and spoons, spatula, paper towels, and a neodymium magnet
Mix, knead, and test
- Stir the water and glue together thoroughly in the bowl.
- Mix in the baking soda. Add the contact lens solution and stir until the mixture starts pulling away from the bowl’s sides.
- Knead the mixture for several minutes. It may feel sticky at first and thicken as you work it.
- Sprinkle in the iron filings and knead until they are spread evenly through the slime and its color looks uniform.
- Bring the neodymium magnet close to the slime and watch how it responds. A damp paper towel can help clean slime residue from the magnet.
The ingredient condition matters: the Science Buddies recipe specifies contact lens solution containing both boric acid and sodium borate. Follow the current product label; a solution without those ingredients may not work as described. The recipe is credited to Ben Finio, PhD, and the source describes the finished slime as magnetic.

Make magnetic putty from premade putty
The National MagLab Magnet Academy method uses 24 g of Silly Putty, black iron oxide powder, a neodymium magnet, a disposable face mask, and disposable gloves. It does not give a measured quantity of oxide, so do not substitute the slime recipe’s iron-filings amount.

- Put on the face mask and gloves, and work over a surface that can tolerate residue.
- Spread the putty out and sprinkle a layer of black iron oxide powder over it.
- Fold the putty over the powder. Add more powder in layers, folding slowly each time to keep powder from becoming airborne.
- Continue until the putty turns black, then test its response by bringing the magnet near it.
MagLab warns that iron oxide in homemade magnetic putty can leave residue on surfaces. Avoid inhaling the fine powder and clean the work area carefully.
Why does the putty move toward a magnet?
The iron-containing particles are attracted to a magnet, while the soft base lets the material bend and stretch as it follows. In glue slime, borate ions help crosslink polymer chains in the glue, making the mixture less runny and forming a gel that traps water. Flinn Scientific describes iron filings as remaining in the polymer through adhesion. The filings are ferromagnetic, not permanent magnets: a nearby permanent magnet can temporarily magnetize them. As the magnet gets very close, the viscous slime may jump up and wrap around it.

Black iron oxide plays a similar role in the premade-putty activity: MagLab says iron-containing putty is attracted to a magnetic field. The particle and base differ from the glue-slime recipe, so the two methods should not be treated as interchangeable instructions.

Handle filings, powder, and magnets safely
- Keep fine material out of your lungs and eyes. For black iron oxide, wear the mask and gloves specified by MagLab and fold slowly. For iron filings, the National Inventors Hall of Fame advises adult supervision, ventilation, protective glasses and gloves, and avoiding inhalation, ingestion, eye contact, and skin contact.
- Use neodymium magnets carefully. They can pinch fingers or crack if they snap together. Science Buddies advises adult supervision and keeping magnets away from small children, pets, credit cards, and pacemakers. Do not drop magnets or let them snap together.
- Protect the work area. Putty containing iron oxide may leave residue. Keep powder contained and wash hands after handling the materials.
- Follow ingredient labels. Use the specified contact lens solution ingredients for the slime recipe and follow current product labels and local disposal guidance if they differ from the activity instructions.
Store and dispose of magnetic slime
Science Buddies recommends sealed storage only for a short period. Iron filings eventually rust, and the slime may turn brown and sticky; when that happens, discard it in the trash and make a new batch. Do not pour slime down the drain.

For a classroom-scale activity, the National Inventors Hall of Fame suggests slime activator and glue kits alongside bulk iron filings. Plan adult oversight for powder and magnet handling, and set up a protected work area before distributing materials.
