A DIY chess set can be as simple as a board made from salvaged wood or as sculptural as a set of cast plaster pieces. These five documented ideas offer different routes: choose craft, laser-cut, or 3D-printed pieces; build a board from wood strips or reclaimed blocks; make a folding set with built-in storage; or take inspiration from an art-led historical design. They are selected for their distinct approaches, not ranked by cost, speed, or durability.

Choose a build path before choosing materials

Start with the part of the set you most want to make. If the pieces are the creative focus, a shared theme can guide their shapes and materials. If you want a traditional board, decide whether you have the tools and patience for accurate cutting and gluing. A reclaimed-wood board allows more variation, while a folding board adds hinges, a latch, and storage to the woodworking. In every case, plan how players will distinguish the pieces and the light and dark squares.

Build path Documented approach What to consider
Themed, laser-cut, or printed pieces MIT’s K-12 Maker Lab suggests craft materials, laser-cut wood, 3D-printed pieces, or rigid foam cut with a hot-wire cutter. Available tools, piece legibility, and the modeling or hand-finishing your design may need.
Wood-strip board Dremel’s plan alternates painted strips and squares to create a framed board. Accurate cutting and gluing, and whether you have an appropriate saw or need another cutting method.
Reclaimed-wood board John Ward-Knox’s Objectspace guide uses salvaged timber cut into 64 blocks. Access to suitable scrap, manual cutting effort, and how much variation you want in the finish.
Folding board with storage Princeton EPICS students made a hinged board that folds into a storage box and paired it with 3D-printed pieces. Portability, storage needs, woodworking skills, and access to a printer and shop tools.
Sculptural concept Julien Levy’s 1944 prototypes used plaster pieces molded with discarded egg shells and seashells set into the board. How clearly the design communicates each piece’s role while pursuing an unconventional look.

Make themed pieces from craft materials or digital fabrication

MIT’s K-12 Maker Lab describes students designing chess pieces around a common theme, with possible methods ranging from general craft materials to laser-cut wood, 3D printing, and rigid foam shaped with a hot-wire cutter. The project page lists craft tools, a 3D printer and modeling software, or a laser cutter and 2D modeling software as relevant equipment, depending on the route.

This approach is a natural fit when you want the set to express a theme—animals, architecture, fantasy, or something of your own invention. Before making every piece, sketch or prototype the full set and check that the king, queen, rooks, bishops, knights, and pawns remain easy to tell apart. A striking silhouette is useful only if it is still recognizable across the board. The source documents possible processes, not a comparison of their cost, effort, or results.

Build a traditional board from painted wood strips

Dremel’s board plan uses eight 2-inch wood strips. The maker paints four black and four white, edge-glues the strips into a panel, cuts the panel into eight 2-inch strips, then glues those strips together with the squares alternating in color. A frame completes the board. The plan names wood, glue, clamps, paint, sandpaper, and a saw tool; its US project page specifies a Dremel DSM20-03 Saw Max Tool Kit and SM500 Wood & Plastic Carbide Wheel.

The sequence depends on consistent strip widths and careful alignment: small errors can become more noticeable as the panel is recut and reassembled. Dremel documents its own tool in the plan, but does not establish that this particular tool is required. If you use different cutting equipment, choose a method appropriate to your materials and skill level, and follow the tool maker’s safety instructions.

Make a chessboard from reclaimed wood

In a guide dated 9 April 2020, artist John Ward-Knox describes making a chess/checkers board from scrap. His materials and tools include salvaged or other wood, a handsaw, hammer, sandpaper, PVA glue, and nails or screws; a drill and clamps are helpful. The process involves cutting 64 blocks, sanding them, coloring alternate squares, framing the base, and gluing the blocks in place.

Ward-Knox suggests several ways to distinguish the squares, including torching, paint, nail polish, different woods, or varied textures. He also names beeswax and household or furniture oils as possible finishes. The guide treats irregularity as part of the board’s character, which makes this a useful route if your reclaimed material is not perfectly uniform. The trade-off is hands-on cutting and fitting: the source does not claim that every piece of scrap will produce a consistent result.

Add folding storage to a wooden board

Princeton EPICS students describe a board made from maple and mahogany, split into two sections and hinged so it folds into a storage box. They added a metal latch, coated the wood with polyurethane, and designed chess pieces in Fusion 360 for 3D printing; sticky felt on the piece bases helped protect the board surface.

This is the most integrated of the documented builds: the board doubles as a container, so the design has to account for hinges, the closure, the interior storage space, and the pieces themselves. The student project involved many hours, tools, and woodshop skills over the course of a year. That timeline describes their project—not a general estimate for making a folding set.

Take inspiration from sculptural chess design

The Philadelphia Museum of Art records Julien Levy’s 1944 chess-set prototypes, which used rounded plaster pieces formed with discarded soft-boiled egg shells as molds and seashells set into a plaster board. The museum says the later oak pieces based on the prototypes were likely made by a local carpenter. The idea is less a repeatable woodworking plan than a reminder that material and shape can make the set itself an artwork.

If you borrow this approach, keep playability in view: unconventional pieces still need to be stable, distinct from one another, and easy to identify during a game. The museum record describes Levy’s prototype and its later oak interpretation; it does not provide a contemporary build guide.

Historical material is context, not a modern recommendation

The British Museum records a chess set with carved and turned ivory pieces in a papier-mâché box, registered in 1849 and probably produced around 1850. This is useful historical context for the variety of materials used in chess sets, not a suggestion to use ivory in a new project. The contemporary build ideas here rely on craft supplies, wood, foam, plaster, or 3D-printed materials instead.
