Yes—you can make a basic capacitive stylus in a few minutes. Wrap aluminum foil around a pencil or empty plastic pen, fold the foil over a smooth, blunt tip, and keep part of the foil exposed where your hand holds it. The result can handle taps, swipes, scrolling, signatures, and simple digital painting on many ordinary capacitive phones and tablets.
It will not behave like an Apple Pencil, S Pen, or other active pen: expect no pressure sensitivity, palm rejection, hover, or device-specific shortcuts.
The easiest DIY capacitive stylus
A foil-wrapped pencil or pen is the most practical household design. The pencil provides a rigid handle, while the aluminum foil creates the conductive path needed by a capacitive touchscreen.
What you need
- One pencil or empty plastic pen
- Aluminum foil, approximately 3–4 inches long
- Scissors
- Tape, optional
- A clean phone or tablet for testing
Build it step by step
- Choose a handle. Use a pencil or plastic pen with a rounded, non-sharp end.
- Cut a foil strip. Make it long enough to wrap around the handle and extend beyond its end.
- Wrap the handle. Wind the foil tightly around the pencil or pen. Leave about an inch extending past the tip.
- Fold the foil over the end. Fold the extra foil back over the tip to create a broad contact surface, not a pointed cone.
- Smooth the contact area. Remove sharp corners, loose edges, deep creases, and protruding foil. The end should be flat or gently rounded and roughly fingertip-sized. A quarter-inch-wide tip is a useful practical guideline from Make:, not a universal specification for every touchscreen.
- Secure the foil. Add tape around the handle if needed, but leave foil exposed where your fingers will hold it.
- Test gently. Hold the exposed foil and touch the smooth foil tip to the screen. Try a tap, then a slow swipe.
Do not cover the entire foil path with plastic or tape. Your hand must contact the foil so the stylus can act as a conductive extension of your body.

Why the foil works
A capacitive touchscreen detects changes in an electrical field or capacitance. Your body is conductive enough to affect that field when your finger touches the glass. Aluminum foil provides a conductive route from your hand to the contact tip.
The important principle is therefore not simply “metal touches glass.” The stylus needs a reasonably continuous conductive path from your hand to a sufficiently broad surface near the screen. A small tip, an insulated grip, dry insulating material, or a loose foil connection can make the stylus unreliable. The Library of Congress explains the basic difference between capacitive and resistive touchscreens.
How to shape the tip for painting
For digital painting, the tip should be:
- Conductive
- Smooth and free of grit
- Blunt rather than pointed
- Flat or gently rounded
- Large enough for the screen to detect consistently
A broad tip is safer and more reliable, but it also hides more of the canvas beneath it. This is an unavoidable limitation of a passive capacitive stylus: the screen generally expects something closer to a fingertip than a fine drawing nib.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse a rigid pencil or pen barrel if you want more control. Keep the foil tight so the tip does not wobble, and hold it at a consistent angle. In a painting app, brush stabilization can make slow strokes easier to manage, but it cannot add pressure sensitivity that the hardware does not provide.
Testing the finished stylus
- Test a single tap on a low-risk part of the screen.
- Try a slow horizontal swipe.
- Drag an icon or slider.
- Open a drawing app and make a few short strokes.
A working stylus should register light contact without requiring you to press hard. Capacitive touchscreens respond primarily to electrical coupling, not force. If it works for tapping but not drawing, enlarge and flatten the tip, check the foil connection, and make sure the screen is dry and clean.

Alternative everyday designs
Cotton swab and foil
For a softer tip, place a cotton swab in an empty plastic pen barrel and wrap foil around the barrel. The foil must contact the tip material and remain exposed where you hold the stylus.
Dry cotton is not inherently the conductive part of this design. The foil, your hand, and—depending on the construction—some moisture provide the conductive path. The Smithsonian Science Education Center activity uses cotton swabs, foil, tape, and water while emphasizing a smooth conductive contact surface.
This version is light and useful for a classroom or craft project, but the cotton can compress, fray, dry out, or lose contact. Replace it when the tip becomes worn.
Slightly moist sponge
Trim a small piece of clean sponge into a smooth, rounded tip and connect it to a conductive handle or foil path. It should be slightly damp—not dripping wet. Moisture helps the sponge conduct, but excess water can reach the screen or device edges.
This is a soft option, though it requires occasional rewetting and may leave moisture on the glass. Use a separate cloth to dry the screen if necessary.

Rounded metal object
A rounded metal pen end, broad key, or large smooth bolt head may trigger a capacitive screen when held in your hand. This is best treated as an emergency tapping or scrolling solution. Most metal objects are too narrow, hard, or awkward for painting.
Recommended Free Tools
Conductivity does not make a metal object screen-safe. Do not use anything with a sharp edge, burr, exposed point, or abrasive surface.
Battery terminal
The negative end of some cylindrical batteries may work as a temporary stylus when held against the screen. This is a poor everyday design because batteries are hard, often narrow, and awkward to control. Never use a leaking, swollen, or damaged battery, and never scrape the screen with its terminal.
Troubleshooting
Nothing happens
- Touch the foil with your fingers. If you are holding only plastic, the conductive path is broken.
- Expose more foil at the grip if tape is insulating it.
- Make the tip wider and flatter.
- Remove plastic, paint, dirt, dry cotton, or other insulating layers from the contact area.
- Test your bare finger. If your finger also fails, the issue may be the screen, protector, moisture, gloves, or device rather than the stylus.
- Try another part of the screen in case the original area is damaged or wet.
It works intermittently
Intermittent response usually means the foil is loose, the hand contact is inadequate, the tip is too small, or the tip has folded into an uneven point. A dry sponge or cotton tip can also interrupt the path. Tighten the foil, reshape the contact area, expose more foil under your fingers, and keep the tip clean.
A thick screen protector, case lip, or unusual digitizer can also reduce reliability. Homemade designs work on many ordinary capacitive screens, not every touchscreen or every device configuration.

It scratches the screen
Stop using it immediately. Inspect the tip for sharp foil corners, hard protrusions, wire, grit, sand, or dirt. Replace the tip rather than trusting a questionable edge. The contact surface must be smooth and blunt.
It works, but writing is difficult
This is normal for a passive stylus. The broad tip can obscure the exact point of contact, and the screen cannot distinguish the stylus from an ordinary finger. Improve control by using a rigid handle, a flat-but-not-oversized tip, tightly wrapped foil, and a consistent writing angle.

A homemade foil stylus is a passive capacitive stylus: essentially a conductive finger extension. It does not contain a battery, communicate with the device, or create pressure data. It may not work reliably through gloves or thick screen protectors.
Which touchscreen types support this?
This project is intended for many modern phones and tablets that use capacitive touchscreens. Capacitive systems detect electrical changes, so a conductive object connected to your hand can often trigger them.

Surface-acoustic-wave, infrared, and other touch systems use different detection methods. Do not assume that a foil stylus works on every kiosk, tablet, monitor, or specialized digitizer.

Safety and screen care
- Never use a nail, pin, needle, bare wire, knife tip, pointed screw, or sharp foil edge.
- Keep grit and dirt away from the contact surface.
- Do not use a dripping wet sponge or cotton swab.
- Do not insert a loose metal object into a charging port or other device opening.
- Do not use a leaking, swollen, or damaged battery.
- Use a light touch; extra pressure does not improve capacitive sensing.
- Replace any tip that becomes frayed, dirty, hard, or misshapen.
The electrical interaction involved is low-level under ordinary use; the main practical risks are mechanical damage from a sharp or dirty tip and liquid reaching the device.
When a commercial stylus makes more sense
Make the foil version if you need an emergency tool for tapping, scrolling, or an occasional signature. If you want a reusable universal passive stylus, a precision-disc model such as the Adonit Mini 4 is designed for general touchscreen use and requires no battery. It still will not provide active-pen features.
For regular handwriting or painting, use the active stylus approved for your device. Logitech describes the Logitech Crayon as an iPad-focused product, with a separate USB-C version; check the exact iPad model and connector before buying. Apple’s Apple Pencil (USB-C) is likewise limited to selected iPad models and requires the stated iPadOS version. For Wacom tablets, consult the compatibility information for the exact device on Wacom’s stylus page.
The right choice depends on the task: homemade foil for immediate basic touch, a passive disc stylus for inexpensive convenience, and a device-specific active pen for serious handwriting or pressure-sensitive painting.
