Materials and finished size
For one coaster, gather:
- One 6½-inch square of quilting cotton
- One 4-inch square of quilt batting
- Thread, pins, scissors, and a sewing machine
- A hand-sewing needle for closing the opening
- A washable fabric marker, optional, for marking the diagonal quilting lines
The pattern’s sample fabric is Beach House by Kate Nelligan for Moda Fabrics; any suitable fabric square can be used. The finished coaster measures about 4¼ inches square.
American Patchwork & Quilting Editors’ pattern, published September 22, 2017, describes it as something to make “in just a few minutes.” That is the publisher’s description, not a measured completion-time estimate.

How to sew the coaster
1. Sew the first folded rectangle
- Fold the 6½-inch fabric square in half with the printed sides, or right sides, together.
- Sew across both short ends with a ¼-inch seam allowance.
- Trim the folded corners, taking care not to cut through the stitching, then press the seams open as directed.
2. Fold and sew the second seam
- Fold the piece to bring the seam allowances at the open end into alignment. Pin the layers in place.
- Sew from each trimmed corner toward the center, stopping about 1½ inches from the center on each side. Leave the opening for turning; the pattern describes it as a 3-inch opening.
3. Turn and add the batting
- Turn the fabric right side out through the opening and press it flat.
- If needed, gently ease out the corners with the eraser end of a pencil.
- Tuck the 4-inch batting square inside through the opening and smooth it flat.
4. Close and quilt
- Hand-sew the opening closed with a ladder stitch.
- Topstitch diagonally across the coaster in an X. The seam lines on the back can help guide the diagonals; alternatively, mark the lines on the top with a washable fabric marker before stitching.
Finishing tips
- Keep the batting centered and smooth before closing the opening so the coaster lies evenly.
- Use a marker only if it helps you place the X; it is optional, not a required supply.
- Test that a washable marker comes out on a fabric scrap before marking the finished piece.
