You can make an Atari 2600 label by designing the artwork to match your goal, sizing it to the chosen printer’s template, and test-printing before cutting. For AtariAge’s custom-cartridge service, the main label cuts to 2.75 × 3.375 inches and the end label to 2.75 × 0.5625 inches; other printers and blank-stock templates may use different dimensions.
Choose the label style before designing
For a new homebrew design, a familiar picture-label layout is a practical starting point: a large image on a black field, an uppercase game title, and an Atari logo with a CX model number. LabelMaker2600 can generate this kind of design from an image and title. That template is a recognizable style, not a universal pattern for every original cartridge.
If you are restoring a vintage cartridge, first identify its label generation and variant. Atari 2600 labels changed over time, including black and silver backgrounds, different title and image treatments, and a later red picture-label style. Compare the cartridge and shell with historical examples in AtariAge’s label-variation reference before recreating the artwork; otherwise, a clean new label may still be historically mismatched.
Use the dimensions for your actual print route
There is no single dimension or bleed rule established for every Atari 2600 label. The figures below are specific to the cited AtariAge pages; use the current template supplied by whichever printer or stock you select.

The custom-cartridge service and the historical contest are different contexts with different bleed instructions. Do not average them or apply one rule to another printer. Keep titles and other important details comfortably inside the cut line. If using AtariAge’s label maker, its instructions say it can add bleed when a solid background extends to the edge.
Prepare separate top and end artwork
For the AtariAge service, make separate main-label and end-label files at the file-with-bleed dimensions in the table, then check that the essential text remains inside the smaller cut area. For another service or a blank sheet, download its template or instructions instead: artwork that fits one vendor’s layout may not align with another’s sheet or cutting guides.

Choose how to produce the labels
- Generate and print at home: LabelMaker2600 creates a common picture-label design from an image and title, but its page does not establish paper compatibility or universal print dimensions. Export the artwork, set its physical size against your chosen template, and make a test print before cutting.
- Use Atari-sized blank stock: 8-Bit Classics lists glossy blank sheets for Atari 2600, 5200, and 7800 cartridges. The seller describes four top and end labels per sheet, sticky backs, rounded corners, downloadable instructions and Photoshop templates, and material choices for inkjet or laser printers. The accessible listing does not state label measurements, so follow its supplied template rather than assuming the service dimensions above apply.
- Have submitted artwork printed: RetroSix accepts custom artwork and lists white, holographic, and transparent finishes. Its listing is specifically titled Activision Style, so do not assume every finish or shape matches every Atari shell.
- Order a custom cartridge: AtariAge’s custom-cartridge service accepts main and end label files as part of a cartridge order. This is an option for cartridge makers, not a requirement for replacing a label.
A maker-video description shows one home workflow using self-adhesive inkjet photo paper, but that anecdote does not establish that a particular paper, fixative, cutting tool, or adhesive is best or archival-safe. Compare a production route by fit, whether it covers both label locations, printer compatibility, finish, template quality, effort, and cost. Verify current stock and service terms with the seller.
Design, print, and fit the label
- Identify the cartridge and goal. Decide whether the label is a new design or a restoration. For a restoration, compare the existing shell and label features with historical variants before choosing colors, title treatment, and image size.
- Choose a template and material. Select the printer or blank stock first. Download its template and confirm whether it includes the top and end labels, what printer type it supports, and whether the sheet is adhesive.
- Build the artwork to the template. Set the file to the specified physical size and resolution. Extend edge-to-edge backgrounds through the template’s bleed area, and keep small text, logos, and borders away from the cut line.
- Test at actual size. Print a draft on ordinary paper at 100% scale, without “fit to page” resizing. Cut it out and check alignment and coverage on the cartridge before printing on label stock.
- Print and cut carefully. Use the material selection that matches your printer—inkjet or laser where the stock offers those choices. Follow the stock or service’s cutting guidance, then apply the label only after confirming its orientation and fit.
Use artwork you have permission to reproduce
AtariAge’s 2004 contest rules state: “If you use any copyrighted images, you must seek permission from the copyright holder before using that image as part of your label.” Its custom-cartridge service also says it will not make homebrew games or hacks without the original author’s permission. Those are the stated conditions for those specific contexts, not a complete legal analysis of private label-making; use original artwork or artwork you are authorized to reproduce.
