Marianne the Maker, a children’s book by Kelly Corrigan and Claire Corrigan Lichty, illustrated by George Sweetland, turns a family joke into a case for children’s creative agency. Its larger point is useful to parents and educators: making is not only about finishing a polished object. Children also need room to follow an idea, practise a skill, try unfamiliar things and make mistakes.
What is Marianne the Maker about?
In Jennifer Blakeslee’s April 29, 2025 Make: article, Marianne is presented as a young inventor whose story grew from a family parable. Kelly Corrigan and her husband made up “Marianne the Faker” as a playful cautionary character when their children tried to avoid activities. Corrigan and her daughter, Claire Corrigan Lichty, transformed that joke into a story that takes children’s interests and agency seriously.

Why does the story make a case for making?
Make: frames making as fundamental to individual well-being and societal progress. The article’s more practical argument is about the conditions that let children develop creative ideas and skills: supportive adults, time, and space for open-ended practice. That practice may not produce an obvious achievement or finished project every time, but it gives children opportunities to explore what interests them and learn through doing.

The story also offers an example of creativity as connection. Corrigan and Lichty’s mother-daughter collaboration carries a family joke into a book, while Lichty draws a connection between pursuing different interests and noticing how they may intersect. Following more than one curiosity can help a child find unexpected links between ideas.
How can adults make more room for children’s ideas?
The article’s emphasis on adult support can be put into practice at home or in a classroom without turning every activity into a lesson or a product. Consider these approaches:

- Protect some open-ended time. Leave room for drawing, building, tinkering, or experimenting without prescribing a single outcome.
- Make materials and space accessible. A modest, usable work area and supplies a child can safely handle make it easier to return to an idea.
- Invite unfamiliar attempts. Encourage trying a new technique or combining interests, while letting the child decide what to pursue.
- Let mistakes be part of the work. Treat an unexpected result as something to examine or build on, rather than proof that the attempt failed.
- Value the process as well as the finished piece. Ask what the child tried, noticed, or wants to change instead of measuring the activity only by whether it looks polished.
These are practical implications of the article’s argument, not a prescribed curriculum or a claim that every child needs the same activity. Art supplies or children’s maker kits can be convenient ways to offer materials, but Make: does not endorse a particular brand or kit.
What does the article say about play, arts, and the brain?
Blakeslee’s article quotes publicity for the book saying studies show unstructured hands-on play is essential for adaptability and resilience, and that regular interaction with the arts is transformative. The article does not identify those studies, their authors, dates, or findings, so those statements are best understood as claims made in the book’s press release—not as independently documented conclusions in the article.

The article also quotes Susan Magsamen and Ivy Ross’s definition of neuroaesthetics from Your Brain on Art as “the scientific study of the neural consequences of contemplating a creative work of art,” including involvement of the prefrontal cortex in thinking and limbic systems in emotions. It quotes their call for “the radical integration of the arts with science and technology to design a more humane future.” These are the authors’ descriptions as quoted by Make:; the article does not supply a specific study or statistic to establish a measurable effect for children’s art-making.

The book’s premise may appeal to families and educators interested in children’s creativity, invention, and self-directed interests. Its origin as a family parable gives the story a playful entry point, while its central message invites adults to take children’s creative agency seriously.
