Maker Camp includes stop-motion animation in its project library, but the exact instructions, materials, and equipment used in the segment titled “Maker Camp: Stop Motion with Lance Ulanoff” could not be verified. Maker Camp’s official resources do establish how the program works, where stop motion fits, and how to plan a local activity without assuming that any particular app or device is required.
What Maker Camp’s stop-motion project is—and what is confirmed
Maker Camp is a free online program produced by Make: for young makers. Its homepage describes a library of more than 200 step-by-step projects, including stop-motion animation, with filters for category, theme, age group, time, and materials. The program’s motto is “Explore-Make-Share.” (Maker Camp homepage; Maker Camp FAQ)
The official 2018 playbook also lists “Stop Motion Animation” in its “Paint with Light” project path. That confirms stop motion belongs to Maker Camp’s broader activity collection, but it does not establish what happens in the specific Lance Ulanoff segment. The available official sources do not verify its particular steps, materials, app, camera, or other equipment. (Maker Camp 2018 playbook)
What supplies to gather for a general Maker Camp activity
Maker Camp’s FAQ gives this general starting point: “In general, collect recycled materials, lots of cardboard, craft supplies, and basic tools to get started.” It also says each project lists its own materials and that participants should provide their own supplies. Check the materials list for the specific project you choose rather than treating the general guidance as the verified supply list for Ulanoff’s segment. (Maker Camp FAQ)
#1 Best Overall
- FULL HD 1080p native video capture. Built-in LED lights and a microphone with noise reduction. The camera’s manual focus lens is perfect for animating without constantly adjusting like an autofocus lens, keeping you in perfect control at all times.
- TAKE STOP MOTION ANIMATION TO THE NEXT LEVEL with the HUE HD Pro camera. The HUE HD Pro has a wider field of view than the smaller HUE HD camera and a focal range of 1cm to infinity, enabling animators to create even more detailed movies. (Maximum capture area: A3.)
- STOP MOTION ANIMATION tools included: easy-to-use stop motion software with sound effects (Windows and macOS), a 64-page full-color book of animation projects to teach techniques such as rotoscoping and time-lapse photography, and printable activities. Register your animation software code to install the premium desktop version of Stop Motion Studio for HUE, or download the free version of Stop Motion Studio for mobile devices to keep animating on the move.
- MULTI-PURPOSE for animation hobbyists, amateur animators and educators. When not being used to create stop motion movies, the HUE HD Pro camera is perfect for video conferencing, homeschooling, online tutoring, working from home, time-lapse, making instructional videos, animating, gaming and giving live demos. The flexible camera is compatible with native Windows, Chrome OS, macOS and Linux camera apps, and can be used as a document camera in a classroom with interactive TVs and smartboards.
- RECOMMENDED BY TEACHERS for animating the curriculum. Use it for school projects to show the water cycle, animate nursery songs, recreate historical events in engaging ways, and so much more.
- Start with what you have: recycled materials and cardboard are the program’s suggested general basics.
- Check the project listing: Maker Camp says individual projects provide their own materials lists; use that list to decide whether anything else is needed.
- Treat other equipment as optional unless the project says otherwise: the FAQ mentions computers, microcontrollers, electronics components, STEM building kits, and 3D printers as possible Maker Camp resources, not as stop-motion requirements.
If you are exploring stop motion informally, clay could be one possible craft material for handmade characters, but the sources do not say that the Lance Ulanoff segment uses or requires it. Recycled or already-available materials are a sensible first choice.
How to use Maker Camp beyond summer
Maker Camp describes its seasonal program as a six-week summer program beginning in July, but the FAQ says activities can also be used throughout the year—in clubs, schools, and other programs. Local sites can select projects that suit their communities. Campsites are hosted by schools, libraries, camps, youth organizations, makerspaces, and other community venues. (Maker Camp FAQ)

- Make ten mini movies with step-by- step instructions
- Ideas and inspiration for lighting, scenery, sound effects and camera work
- Official Lego guide to stop-motion animation
- Contains one 78-page book, 36 LEGO elements, backgrounds and animation frames
- Conforms to ASTM D 4236
Participation is free for leaders and campsites. Local organizers supply materials, staff, a meeting location, and any necessary insurance. The FAQ’s guidance makes the practical distinction clear: the online program and project ideas are free; hosting a local activity still requires a venue, people, and supplies. (Maker Camp FAQ)
What the program’s participation figures mean
The Maker Camp homepage reports more than 2,000 registered camps around the globe. It also gives historical participation figures for summer 2022: an average of around 29 campers per week and an average total of 119 campers around the world throughout that summer. These are program-reported figures, not an independent current census. The homepage also reports that 77% of registered campsites reach and teach girls coding, tool use, and other high-tech skills, but the surfaced page does not clearly date that percentage, so it should not be read as a current-year measure.
