Toys from Trash is Arvind Gupta’s hands-on science education project: it uses discarded and everyday materials to make toys and demonstrations that help learners explore how things work. To try the approach, choose a simple build, gather clean materials you already have, and use the finished toy to observe a science idea—not just to make a decoration.
What is Toys from Trash?
The project is associated with Arvind Gupta, an Indian toy inventor and science educator. According to eCoexist’s profile of Toys from Trash, Gupta developed the approach while participating in the Hoshangabad Science Teaching Programme in 1978, using locally available materials and items that would usually be thrown away.

The point is to make science accessible through construction and experimentation. A 2023 working paper from the Institute for Social and Economic Change describes the approach as learning by doing: learners encounter science and design principles by making simple toys from waste materials. The project’s own page captures its spirit with the line, “The best thing a child can do with a toy is to break it !” The page does not name a speaker for that sentence.
How do you make a toy from trash?
- Choose an idea to investigate. Start with something observable, such as balance, motion, sound, air pressure, light, or magnetism.
- Pick a simple project. The official Toys from Trash index includes examples such as balancing nails, a button-wheel car, a balloon pump, an electric motor, a matchbox train, and a water wheel.
- Gather suitable materials. Look for clean, reusable household or discarded parts that fit the project. Individual builds may require particular components, so check the instructions before starting.
- Build, test, and adjust. Follow the project directions, then observe what happens. Change one feature at a time where practical, and try the demonstration again to see whether the result changes.
- Take it apart and ask why. Consider which parts move, balance, vibrate, push air or water, or conduct electricity. Making and investigating the mechanism is the learning activity.
Match the build to the learner’s age, dexterity, and available adult help. The catalog does not provide a standardized difficulty or safety rating; some activities may need closer supervision or specific parts.

What can these projects teach?
The official catalog ranges well beyond decorative crafts. Its examples and subject areas include air and water, force, pressure, light, mathematics, sound, spinning toys, electricity and magnetism, motors, generators, and pumps.
| Example project | Possible focus | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Balancing nails | Balance and stability | Useful for observing how an arrangement can stay balanced; check the project instructions for the required setup. |
| Button-wheel car | Motion and simple mechanisms | Look for clean, compatible parts and a surface where the toy can move freely. |
| Balloon pump | Air and pressure | Use the official build directions to identify the required parts and how the demonstration works. |
| Electric motor or generator | Electricity and magnetism | These builds involve specific components; use the instructions and appropriate adult supervision. |
| Water wheel | Water and motion | Plan for a controlled place to test it and manage water safely. |
These are broad learning connections, not standardized lesson outcomes or difficulty ratings. The project index does not report measured learning gains or quantified environmental benefits, so the value is best understood as an opportunity to explore through making rather than as a guaranteed result.

How to choose a project
- Science idea: Select a principle the learner is curious about and can observe directly.
- Materials: Prefer parts that are available, clean, and appropriate for the build; avoid assuming every activity can be made from any scrap.
- Complexity and supervision: Consider the learner’s dexterity and whether the construction or testing needs adult help.
- Demonstration value: Choose a toy whose behavior can be repeated and examined, so the learner can connect what they see to how it is built.
Where to find project instructions and books
The official project index is a free starting point for browsing toys and science experiments. The official Books and Toys catalog also lists a Toys from Trash activity title. An Exotic India Art retailer listing describes a book containing more than 50 projects; confirm the edition and current availability with the seller. A book is optional—the approach itself is based on making with accessible materials, and project resources are listed online.
