Choose the least reflective finish that still handles a room’s cleaning and moisture demands. Matte or flat paint is usually the best-looking solution for low-traffic bedrooms and walls with minor flaws. Satin (often grouped with eggshell) is the practical middle ground for hallways, family rooms, children’s rooms, and many bedrooms. Kitchens and bathrooms generally need satin or semi-gloss, with semi-gloss better suited to repeated washing and splash exposure. Reserve gloss and high-gloss for trim, doors, windows, cabinets, furniture, and other features where durability and reflected light are advantages.
That rule works because sheen affects five things at once: how much light the surface reflects, how clearly it reveals dents and roller marks, how easily it wipes clean, how well it tolerates traffic or moisture, and how formal or soft the room feels.

What do flat, matte, satin, semi-gloss, and gloss finishes actually change?
Paint sheen is the amount of light a dry coating reflects. Lower-sheen coatings look calmer and camouflage small surface variations; higher-sheen coatings create a clearer highlight but make preparation defects easier to see. Cleanability and moisture tolerance generally improve as sheen rises, although the exact performance depends on the paint formula and its label.
| Finish | Reflectivity and appearance | Imperfection hiding | Cleaning and wear | Best uses | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flat | Lowest reflection; minimizes glare | Best at hiding minor flaws and uneven texture | Most vulnerable to scuffs and stains unless the formula is specifically washable; usually touches up well | Ceilings, adult bedrooms, formal low-traffic rooms, textured or uneven walls | Harder to maintain in busy or damp areas |
| Matte | Low-luster, soft appearance | Hides minor imperfections effectively | Some modern formulas are durable and easy to clean, but washability varies | Bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, low- to moderate-traffic walls | Do not assume every matte product is suitable beside a sink or stove |
| Satin or eggshell | Soft pearl-like or smooth sheen | Shows more texture than matte but less than semi-gloss | Better wipeability and traffic resistance than flat or many matte products | Hallways, family rooms, children’s rooms, frequently cleaned bedrooms, and kitchens or baths when a moderate sheen is preferred | Exact sheen names and performance differ by manufacturer |
| Semi-gloss | Noticeably reflective | Reveals dents, patches, and roller marks unless the surface is well prepared | Durable, moisture-tolerant, and easy to clean | Kitchen and bathroom walls, laundry rooms, trim, closet doors, cabinets, and other high-use surfaces | Can look harsh or uneven on a poorly prepared broad wall |
| Gloss or high-gloss | Strongest reflection and visual highlight | Least forgiving of flaws | Hard-wearing and suited to frequent handling | Trim, doors, windows, cabinets, furniture, and architectural feature elements | Glare and strong reflections make it a poor default for most large wall areas |
Manufacturers do not use sheen names in exactly the same way. Read the specific can for washability, interior-surface suitability, and application instructions rather than treating “matte,” “satin,” or “eggshell” as universal performance grades.

Which paint finish hides wall imperfections best?
Flat hides the most, followed closely by matte. Their low reflection breaks up the way light travels across a wall, so shallow dents, patched nail holes, and minor texture differences attract less attention. This makes them useful on older plaster, textured drywall, or surfaces that cannot be made perfectly smooth.
Satin, semi-gloss, and gloss progressively reveal more. A side-lit wall can show every sanding ridge or roller edge in a reflective finish. If you need satin or semi-gloss for cleaning, spend more preparation time on filling, sanding, dust removal, and priming bare patches; changing to a lower sheen is the better fix when the wall itself is substantially uneven.
Which finish is easiest to clean?
Among these categories, semi-gloss is the most consistently associated with frequent wiping and moisture. Satin is easier to wipe than flat and many matte paints while producing less glare than semi-gloss. Matte performance is formula-specific: a product labeled washable can work in a moderate-use room, but an ordinary matte should not be selected solely because its color is attractive.
Cleaning resistance is not a substitute for correct product selection. Check whether the label approves the paint for interior walls, trim, cabinets, or another intended surface, and follow the manufacturer’s curing and cleaning directions before scrubbing.

What finish should you use in each room?
Bedrooms
Use flat or matte in an adult bedroom when a quiet, non-reflective finish and maximum camouflage are the priorities. Move to satin or eggshell when the bedroom gets heavy use, needs regular wiping, or belongs to a child. A higher sheen is a practical response to cleaning demand, not a requirement for every sleeping space.
Living rooms and dining rooms
Matte, flat, or eggshell suits lower-wear living and dining rooms where a soft appearance matters more than maximum scrub resistance. Choose satin for a family room, a busy household, or any wall that will be cleaned often. This keeps the finish more forgiving than semi-gloss while improving day-to-day maintenance.
Kitchens
Satin is the starting point when you want a softer look and the chosen product is explicitly washable. Use semi-gloss on walls or work areas exposed to repeated splashes, grease, steam, or frequent cleaning. Cabinets and trim can move to semi-gloss or gloss when you want added durability and a stronger highlight.
Bathrooms
Satin or semi-gloss is the normal choice for bathroom walls because both provide more moisture tolerance and wipeability than flat or many matte products. Select a paint labeled for the intended interior surface and apply it according to the can directions. Choose semi-gloss when cleaning frequency and moisture exposure outweigh the desire for a subdued appearance.

Hallways, foyers, and children’s rooms
Satin is a strong default for areas that collect fingerprints, shoe marks, and repeated contact. Matte can still work where low reflection and easy touch-ups matter more than maximum scrub resistance, provided the product’s label supports the expected use.
Ceilings
Flat is commonly recommended for ceilings because it minimizes reflected glare from windows and light fixtures and conceals small surface variations. A ceiling with unusual moisture or cleaning requirements should follow the product maker’s surface guidance rather than an automatic sheen rule.

Should trim, doors, and cabinets match the wall sheen?
No. Coordinating sheen is usually more useful than matching it. Walls can stay matte, eggshell, or satin while trim and doors receive satin, semi-gloss, gloss, or high-gloss to create a deliberate edge and withstand handling.
Use satin when you want a restrained highlight, semi-gloss for a clearer distinction and stronger cleaning performance, and gloss or high-gloss when emphasizing architectural detail is part of the design. Reflective finishes are especially effective on windows, doors, cabinets, furniture, and other woodwork with clean lines; they are less forgiving on broad walls.

How do you decide between satin and semi-gloss?
Start with the room’s hardest demand, then select the lowest sheen that meets it.
- Prioritize hiding flaws: choose flat or matte, especially on patched, textured, or uneven walls.
- Balance appearance and cleaning: choose satin or eggshell for a smoother, wipeable surface without the stronger reflection of semi-gloss.
- Expect frequent washing or moisture: choose satin when exposure is moderate and semi-gloss when splashes, steam, grease, or repeated scrubbing are central concerns.
- Highlight woodwork: use satin, semi-gloss, gloss, or high-gloss on trim, doors, and cabinets according to the amount of contrast and shine you want.
- Confirm the label: verify the exact product’s washability, approved surface, and sheen description because brands classify and formulate finishes differently.
When two finishes seem workable, choose the lower sheen for a calmer look and better flaw concealment, and the higher sheen for easier maintenance and stronger moisture resistance.
How should you prepare and apply a reflective finish?
Preparation matters more as sheen rises. A semi-gloss or gloss coating cannot hide a shallow patch or sanding scratch the way flat paint can, and a thick coat can develop visible runs or texture. Use this sequence:
- Clean the surface. Remove dust, grease, soap residue, and other contaminants so the coating can bond evenly.
- Repair defects. Fill holes and dents, allow filler to dry, and sand repairs until they are flush with the surrounding wall.
- Sand where needed. Dull glossy existing paint and smooth ridges or loose material; remove sanding dust before coating.
- Prime bare spots. Primer evens absorption and helps prevent repaired areas from flashing through the finish.
- Protect the work area. Mask adjacent surfaces, cover floors and fixtures, ventilate the room, and use appropriate protective equipment.
- Apply multiple thin coats for semi-gloss or high-gloss enamel. BEHR’s guidance favors several thin coats over one thick coat for a smoother result. Respect the product’s recoat and curing times.
Do not judge final sheen while the paint is still wet. Lighting direction, wall texture, and the curing process can change the apparent uniformity as the coating dries.

How much paint do you need?
The Home Depot’s 2024 interior-paint planning figure is about 400 square feet per gallon. Treat that as an estimate, not a guarantee: porous surfaces, strong color changes, textured walls, application method, and the number of coats all alter coverage.
Measure each wall, subtract large openings, and buy enough paint for the specified coats. Keep the product name, color formula, and sheen recorded for future touch-ups; a later can with the same color name may not match if the formula or sheen differs.
What are the most common finish-selection mistakes?
- Choosing by sheen alone: A “washable” claim belongs to a specific formula, not to every paint with the same sheen name.
- Using matte beside heavy splash zones: Unless the label specifically supports that use, matte may mark more easily than satin or semi-gloss.
- Putting gloss on an unprepared wall: Reflection will expose dents, patches, lap marks, and uneven texture.
- Assuming all rooms need the same finish: Ceilings, walls, trim, cabinets, and doors face different wear and moisture conditions.
- Applying one heavy coat: Reflective enamels look smoother when applied in thin, even coats with proper drying time.
- Ignoring lighting: A wall that looks even head-on can reveal defects when a window or fixture casts light across it at a low angle.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is eggshell paint the same as satin paint?
They are often grouped together as moderate-sheen options, but the names are not standardized across manufacturers. Compare the can’s sheen description and washability claim rather than assuming two products with different names perform identically.
Can I use interior wall paint on cabinets or doors?
Only use a product whose label approves that surface. Cabinets and doors experience more handling than ordinary walls, so a coating intended for trim, cabinetry, or other high-use surfaces is the safer specification.
Why does a reflective finish show marks after painting?
Higher sheen reflects light across the surface, making sanding ridges, patches, lap marks, and roller texture easier to see. Correct the surface and use thin, even coats before changing the color or blaming the finish.
Do I need different paint finishes in one open-plan room?
You can use different sheens where surfaces have different jobs: a lower-sheen wall, a flat ceiling, and more durable trim or cabinet coatings. Keep the color coordinated while letting cleaning and handling needs determine the sheen.
